We feel sorry for sports writers. It’s seems their whole game is spinning babble-filled yarns about nothing so they can justify getting paid to write stories about silliness. USA Today’s action sports specialist Sal Ruibal worked overtime on his recent Shaun White story. Here’s what we mean:
Shaun White is a major league mench.. . . The Yiddish word for a person of honor and integrity wasn’t coined with red-headed, board-shredding millionaires in mind, but 22-year-old White has grown into it. . . . The former uber-grom has emerged from sixth-grade phenom status to become one of the world’s best athletes in snowboarding and skateboarding. He owns multiple gold medals from the Summer and Winter X Games, Summer and Winter Dew Tour and 2006 Winter Olympics.
How’s that for a mainstream sports pitch? Major league, Mench, Yiddish, shredding, uber. . . We can almost hear the paper’s editors: “If that doesn’t make every fat-assed, couch plowing, football fan put down their beer and read a newspaper, nothing will.”

There are priests who surf so why not a snowboarding Rabbi. Chaim Shapiro is right for the job. The Rabbi moved to Vancouver from New York after marrying Leah Feigelstock, now the two are set on creating “Jewish programming in the alpine resort town of Whistler, B.C.”
Rabbi Shapiro has organized après-ski prayers when a minyan was needed for someone to recite Kaddish, as well as Shabbatons, a mobile sukkah on the back of a truck, Chanukah parties and Rosh Hashanah services.
What? All we we can say is: L’Chaim, shredders.

See those blobs on the tip and tail of the snowboard? Those are weapons for “blowing away the competition” in the new Wii game Snowboard Riot from Hudson Entertainment.
Snowboard Riot is not your standard snowboarding game,” said Sabine Duvall, Vice President of Product Development at Hudson Entertainment. “A snowboarding game is a rush by itself, but when you add weapons, it becomes even more exciting. Add in online play for four people and you have the perfect game for both snowboarding and action-racing fans.”
The game looks terrible, but we saw some Oakley banners in some of the screen shots, so someone apparently thinks this thing will sell. And maybe it would be fun to shoot up the slopes. . . especially if there are freeskiers in the game.

The New York Times Dealbook blog made mention of Quiksilver today with the following:
One small deal that may be in the works would be the sale of Quiksilver, a maker of surfer-style clothing, to Nike or another strategic acquirer. Quicksilver [sic] has retained Morgan Stanley to advise on its strategic alternatives.
And seeing as Quik’s stock closed well below the $2 mark again today it could be a good deal, as long as Nike doesn’t mind buying over a billion in debt.

We’re not big Final Fantasy video game fans so don’t really know how silly this sounds, but game publisher SquareEnix has just announced Final Fantasy VII: Snowboarding. It’s apparently as strange a mix to gamers as it is to us.
Japanese publishing powerhouse Square Enix has gone to every effort to make the most of its cherished Final Fantasy VII franchise in recent years, and none are more leftfield than the recently announced Final Fantasy VII: Snowboarding. . . The $3 mobile game is currently available to Japanese users on the DoCoMo network.
Guess video snowboarding is pretty big in Japan.

A 29-year-old woman from Wellington, New Zealand died today (November 8, 2008) after falling 15 meters into a hole created by a stream while snowboarding at Mount Ruapehu.
Sergeant Graeme Rumble says it appears the woman got into difficulty when she reached the lip of a drop-off, and was uncomfortable continuing on her intended course due to a hole in the snow caused by an underground stream. . . . But he says when she tried to climb back up she slipped and fell about 15 metres into the hole.
Medical crews were on the scene, but they could not resuscitate her. The death is currently be investigated by police.
