Gundlach Named Quik’s SVP/GM Winter Sports

by The Editors on January 17, 2012

Quik Logo10From the official news released today it would appear that Mike “Chief” Nusenow has a new boss of sorts, and someone who shares his SVP, winter sports title at Quiksilver.

Clark Gundlach, the former (wait, it’s a really, really long title) “Senior Vice President leading Sales, National Accounts, Sales Operations, Licensed Store Platforms, and Multi-Channel Distribution in North America and the Southern Hemisphere for Burton, RED and Anon brands” has been named Senior Vice President and General Manager of Winter Sports at Quiksilver, Americas.

“Clark, Chief, and the rest of the snow team in the Americas, along with athletes like Travis Rice and Torah Bright, are going to take our brands and our business to new places,” stated Rob Colby, President of Quiksilver Americas. “I couldn’t be happier with this crew.”

Gundlach will report directly to Colby and Nusenow will report to Gundlach. If Quik wants to make inroads into the heart of the winter sports market there’s no better way than by hiring one more person away from the leader in the category. Follow the jump for the official word from Quik. [click to continue…]

Today Is Youtube Channel Launch Day

by The Editors on January 17, 2012

As we follow the launch of the new Youtube action sports channels, here’s the teaser for Network A, the channel being created by Wasserman Media Group and Bedrocket. According to sources, it will go live later today right here. Tony Hawk’s The Ride Channel is already live. We still want good video without having to wade through all the stuff we don’t want to watch and so far these new “channels” don’t seem to be helping much in that pursuit.

Vine & Sams Rippin’ Bear Mountain

by The Editors on January 16, 2012

Scotty Vine and Ian Sams show the world that SoCal’s Bear Mountain doesn’t need any fresh snow to make snowboarding happen. That’s what miles of snow blower hose is for. . .

by The Editors on January 16, 2012

Ajeavpmcaaa3ZgmJake Owen, a country singer we’ve never heard of before, reportedly broke is collar bone while snowboarding in Colorado on Friday the 13th, according to a story on The Boot.

He got pretty banged up, but that didn’t stop him from hopping on Twitter to share the details. . . “Just broke my collar bone,” he tweeted. “Guess I charged this mountain a little too hard.” . . Included with the post was a picture of the country star with his arm in a sling.

Hopefully, there was at least one drunk girl to kiss it and make it all better.

by The Editors on January 13, 2012

Mammoth Park Shreds Get New Website

by The Editors on January 12, 2012

Mam UnboundMammoth Mountain has chiseled out a section of their website specifically for the park shred crowd. Called Mammoth Unbound (just like the terrain parks) the new “website” kicks down all the info on the parks, parties, and place to be both on and off the snow. Or, as Mammoth Mountain marketing says:

The dork box you’re staring at just got a whole lot cooler with the official launch of MammothUnbound.com. This all-new site contains everything skiers and snowboarders need to know about Mammoth, via a stunning new interface. . MammothUnbound.com is built largely around imagery. The stunning photos come from photographer Peter Morning, who last season was tasked with compiling a library of alluring images large enough to support an entirely new web site.

Now, if only this new website could magically coat the mountain in a blanket of real, deep, fresh snow then it would really be something. [click to continue…]

Youtube’s Action Sporting Channels All Set

by The Editors on January 12, 2012

On January 17, 2012 Goggle/Youtube’s latest attempt at channeling quality content to high paying advertisers will launch across the web.

In the action space we have The Ride Channel from Tony Hawk Inc. (above), Network A, a joint venture between Wasserman Media Group and a company called Bedrocket, and then there is The Red Bull Channel which will likely feature a collection of all those “wild, crazy, unbelievable” videos your grandparents are constantly forwarding to you from Red Bull Media House.

Each channel was reportedly given $1 million against a share of future advertising earnings. Not exactly bubble money, but not that bad either. Without going to deeply into the logic right now, we’ll just say that we’re not exactly bullish on the whole old-media “network channel” concept. We are, however, looking forward to The Weekend Buzz featuring Rob Brink and Erica Yary. It will be on The Ride Channel and it looks good.
