Shaun White Moves Up To CAA

by The Editors on June 3, 2010

Sbj201005310101-01Shaun White has reportedly left his long-time agent Mark Ervin and IMG and made the move to Hollywood’s uber-huge Creative Artists Agency, according to a Tripp Mickel story in the Sports Business Journal.

After eight years of working together, White last week dropped Ervin and IMG for CAA. He now is represented by a team of CAA agents who will work to develop marketing partnerships, appearances and television, music and motion picture opportunities for the 23-year-old.

Creative Artist Agency represents pretty much every A-lister in the business including (but not limited to) Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Ashton Kutcher, David Beckham, LeBron James, and of course, Tony Hawk.

This ought to keep those millions rolling.

Zak’s Boardroom Owner On Life Support

by The Editors on June 3, 2010

John “Zak” Kaercher, 29, the owner of Anchorage, Alaska’s Zak’s Boardroom and Phaze One indoor skatepark is currently on life support and “brain dead” after falling from his skateboard Tuesday night while reportedly towing on a truck, according to a story in the Anchorage Daily News.

. . . police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said. Kaercher was being towed behind a Toyota Tacoma when he lost control and hit his head on the pavement, then began convulsing, Parker said.

Zak’s father Dale Kaercher is reportedly disputing the police report saying that his son simply lost his balance while skateboarding home from work. Our thoughts are with Kaercher’s family, friends, and the entire Anchorage skate and snow community.

Truck Tows Skateboarder Into Hospital

by The Editors on June 3, 2010

An 8-year-old Kansas boy is in critical condition after towing on his skateboard behind a truck his brother was driving, according to a story KCTC5.com.

Witnesses said the 8-year-old was riding alongside the passenger side of the truck, when he lost control and fell. After falling, the truck struck the boy. . . “I saw him holding onto the truck and let go, grab, and then grab back on,” witness Worthen said. “The truck continued going and slammed on its braked and backed up. I saw the older brother grab (him) and run him down the hill.”

Seems like a certain skateboard industry organization might be able to get the word out that towing is a really, really bad idea. If you don’t believe it, click here for more towing stories.

JoemaloofMaloof Money Cup owner Joe Maloof was interviewed by CNBC’s Darren Rovell about his familiy’s sports business. Not surprisingly the first topic was skateboarding.

Hits to our Web site are exploding and we’ve truly become the greatest skateboarding event out there,” Mr. Maloof said. “Our goal continues to be to get the top skateboarders in the world to our events and we did it here again. Out of the top 48 skateboarders, it looks like we’ll have at least 47, including P-Rod and Chris Cole, and might get them all if Ryan Sheckler comes.”

We’re guessing he’ll be there. No?

Sheckler-Cabflip

When we can’t actually be there it’s nice to know Rob Brink is. He apparently covered the whole Sheckler Skate For A Cause event held May 29, 2010 at the etnies skatepark without once lifting his finger from the shuttler release.

Click the link and you’ll see exactly what we’re talking about. It’s almost animated GIF overload, but in a good way.

Skateboarding As Autism Therapy

by The Editors on May 15, 2010

Askateredlogo.121133534 StdWhen Chrys Worley saw how much her autistic 7-year-old son Sasha loved skateboarding she realized that it might be good for other kids who suffer from the disability. So she started the A.Skate Foundation, according to a story in the Tuscaloosa News.

“It’s often really difficult for kids with autism to be part of organized sports,” said Chrys Worley, a West Blocton mom whose 7-year-old son has autism. . . “Skateboarding is something they can do as a group but also individually,” she said. “They don’t have to be overwhelmed, and it’s constant motion.”

We’ve always used skateboarding as therapy, but it’s nice to know someone is using it to help the kids who need it the most.
