Natasha Noland, 25, the daughter of Santa Cruz, California’s Pacific Wave Surf Shop owners Todd and Sue Noland died late Friday night, July 27, 2012, after falling out of a bus on her way back from a Brad Paisley concert, according to a story in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.
Noland reportedly got into a fight with another woman inside the bus when a door opened and both women fell from the moving bus onto the highway’s southbound lanes between Lark Avenue and Highway 9 in Los Gatos at 11:50 p.m., CHP officials said. . . Noland was run over and killed by the bus, CHP officials said. . . The other woman, a 20-year-old Felton resident, was taken to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries, CHP spokesman DJ Sarabia said.
Noland was the women’s buyer at Pacific Wave. Our thoughts are with Natasha’s friends and especially with her parents.

Agenda NYC officially opened their doors to buyers and the press at 9 AM yesterday morning (July 16, 2012). Hackers have allegedly posted close to 35,000 “unencrypted text passwords” from the Billabong.com store, according to a story in The Australian.
Online publication SC Magazine has reported that hacktivists released the credentials under #WikiBoatWednesday, an event popular in hacktivist Twitter circles. . . Billabong has told the magazine that its customer database did not contain financial data, only personal information, but is yet to confirm or deny whether its user information has been hacked.
Billabong said the following: “We view this attack as an extremely serious matter and have taken urgent action to contain the incident and prevent further attacks occurring.” That’s just one reason why you shouldn’t use your email password when you’re buying bikinis.

Former Volcom Berkeley store manager Damian Kordick cut right to the bone when asked by the Daily Californian why the store on Telegraph Avenue was closing on Wednesday, June 27, 2012.
Store manager Damian Kordick said the store closed due to a lack of sales. . . “Rent for all the businesses on Telegraph is extremely high,” Kordick said. . . Not long ago, Kordick’s finance team decided it would be best not to resign the store’s lease, both for Volcom and for Berkeley customers.
He also pointed out that clothing stores were “kind of saturated in the Berkeley area, what with Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, different department stores in the city.” Well, at least Volcom still has Pac Sun, right?

Wow. Things just seem to be getting worse and worse from Pacific Sunwear. The action mall retailer reported a net loss of $106.4 million dollars in the year ended January 28, 2012, according to a story in the Orange County Business Journal.
Chief Executive Gary Schoenfeld told shareholders in the company’s 2011 annual report, released Wednesday [June 27, 2012], that improving “clarity with consumers about what PacSun stands for as a brand and why they should love to shop with us” is among its top priorities.
Yes, getting people into the stores to buy things would seem like a pretty good plan, especially as the ongoing “turn around” has only resulted in in increasing losses (Pac Sun lost only $96.6 million last year). Retail is hell.

Each year the website 24/7 Wall St. lists ten brands that they believe will disappear in the coming year. This year, along with American Airlines, Research In Motion, and Suzuki, the editors included PacSun.
Pacific Sunwear (NASDAQ: PSUN) no longer has the capital to compete. The retailer will be gone by the end of 2013. In the company’s most recent 10-Q, it said one of its biggest risks was running low on capital and not meeting financial obligations. . . What will happen to the retailer? It could be bought by a larger company — its market cap is only $108 million — or it may go out of business with its inventory sold to other retailers.
24/7 Wall St. hasn’t had the best track record when it comes to divining the future, but it’s hard to disagree with much of what they have to say about PacSun.

Saturdays isn’t the only surf shop in NYC. After Mollusk New York closed last year Chris Gentile decided he wasn’t done with surf retail just yet and opened Pilgrim Surf & Supply at 68 N 3rd St. in Brooklyn, according to a story on Cool Hunting.
Gentile. . . aims “to bridge surf and certain parts of fashion that I find really relevant.” The beautiful boards are handmade by some of the best shapers in the world. Among the store’s other carefully selected pieces are women’s swimwear from Bantu, Basta, and Caitlin Mociun (who shares a studio space with Gentile and has a store around the corner); bags and wallets by Makr Carry Goods; beach wraps by Nomadic Thread Society; and apparel by VSTR and M.Nii.
If you’re wondering how these New York surf boutiques can find success just remember– in NYC shopping is not a sport, it’s a lifestyle.
