They did it! After turning their snow guns on Friday, Southern California’s Mountain High has thrown down 12 to 16 inches of new snow and is ready to fire the lifts up on Sunday, November 11, 2012.
Up to 3 lifts will be available Sunday accessing 4 trails with a good combination of beginner and intermediate terrain. This means there is something for every member of the family including top to bottom terrain features for freestyle skiers and snowboarders. Mountain High offers a full line of rental and retail products along with repair services and food & beverage. The Winter Sports School will also be open with its early-season $99 Special consisting of a lift ticket and one hour private lesson for both children and adults ($140 Value).
Mammoth Mountain opened at 8:30 AM yesterday with a bit of snow, freezing temps, lots of dirt and high wind. But none of that slowed the hard core. No. They were out and charging. Yobeat was there to document.
With the serious cold snap hitting the West Coast of the US this weekend Southern California’s Mountain High has decided to turn on the snow guns and begin making snow on Friday, November 9, 2012. With the guns running full speed they hope to open by Sunday morning, November 11.
“We are excited to get this season underway,” says Mountain High CMO John McColly. “With more than $1 Million in improvements and the possibility of another El Nino, this is going to be a terrific winter.”
If the mountain is open on Veterans Day (Monday, November 12) the resort will stick to their “active military rides free on Veterans Day” promise. Follow the jump for all the details. [click to continue…]
Mammoth Mountain’s little sibling resort June Mountain (which is closed for the season) will be relaunched with a complete makeover for the 2013-14 season, according to a story on MammothTimes.com.
“We’re going to open it up,” he said during an interview. “We submitted our operating plan to the Forest Service and now we’re waiting for approval, and part of that operating plan is letting them know that we intend to open it as normal for the 2013-14 season.” . . It is in essence a re-launch of the ski area, which is owned by Mammoth Mountain. Gregory said Mammoth would take the year to more clearly hone June Mountain’s mission and to target its marketing base.
Storms rolling in out of the Pacific are set to blanket Tahoe in snow this week. Boreal Mountain Resort on Northern California’s Donner Summit checked in today (October 22, 2012) with 10-15 inches of snow and the report has more on the way.
The cold temperatures are expected to remain in the region through this week, with an additional 15-20 inches forecasted. The sub-freezing temperatures will allow snowmaking operations to begin and run at every opportunity. Pending storm totals and snowmaking conditions, Boreal is targeting to open for skiing and snowboarding on Friday, October 26, 2012 (conditions permitting).
Guess that means it’s time to get your shredding costumes out. It’s going to be a halloween opener. Follow the jump for the official word. [click to continue…]
In days past it would be a storm that would get the sheds restless, now it’s the jet fighter sounds of snow guns that get hearts racing. And Colorado’s Copper Mountain is doing just that as they fired up their snowmaking guns this morning, October 2, 2012.
Favorable weather conditions have enabled Copper Mountain Resort to fire up the snow guns this morning, commencing one of Colorado’s largest snowmaking operations and the U.S. Speed Center VIP Preview Contest. 87 automatic snowmaking guns will be dedicated to the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center, the world’s only early season full-length alpine racing venue, scheduled to open in late-October.
Hope it stays cooled enough to make it stick. For the official details, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
British Columbia Canada’s Red Mountain is nearly doubling their in-bounds terrain this season with an addition of 997 acres.
The 997-acre expansion on Grey alone is about the same size as the revered Mt. Baker Ski Area in Washington. To put this in perspective, total acreage with our new terrain on Grey makes RED larger than Jackson Hole, Wyoming. With the new zone, RED is elevated to the top three-percent (3%) of all resorts in North America for skiable acres (2,682!), while keeping its independent soul and escaping the stuffy (and expensive) trappings of many of the Mega Resorts.
For the 2012-13 season the Grey Zone will be accessed by an Alpina Sherpa sled, but during the summer of 2013 the resort is putting in a Poma Quad Chair. That means the civilians are coming. Better get it while you can this winter. Follow the jump for the official word from Red Mountain. [click to continue…]
Bear Mountain will kick off the 2012-13 SoCal winter season the same way they have from the past eight years–with a huge party, fresh snow, and monstrous rails, walls, and other features. The 9th Annual Hot Dawgz & Hand Rails goes down September 22, 2012 beginning at 2 PM.
Watch 40 top snowboarders with raw talent battle it out for $15,000 cash on 130 tons of man made snow at this ultimate park showdown. This unique, summertime snowboarding competition will feature some of the best professional jobbers in North America to compete on new urban-style park features that will be available for the public to ride in the RedBull Plaza at Bear Mountain this winter.
Nighttime temperatures continue to drop at Mammoth Mountain, and the lingering chill every morning can only mean one thing- Opening Day is right around the corner! Time to dust off the . . . boards, because the lifts start running on November 8!
We can guarantee that it doesn’t look like this at Mammoth now, but come November there will certainly be enough snow to slide on (white ribbon of . . . ). Mark you calendars, book a bargain room, and be shred ready.
