A Happy Kevin Pearce Story Turned Sad

by The Editors on January 4, 2010

Articleinline-1New York Times writer John Brauch had just completed a profile on Kevin Pearce when he got news of the snowboarder’s injury. Here’s how he tells it in the NYT.

Many know Kevin Pearce. Many know Simon Pearce. Few link them together. I found it fascinating — a father and son, connected by their ability to create in utterly different disciplines, famous to vastly different audiences. . . Yes, that was the story. . . On Dec. 21, Pia Pearce cheerfully gave a tour of the family’s house in Norwich, Vt., and the house’s renovated barn, well known on the snowboarding circuit as the ultimate hangout — a skateboard ramp in back, a great room inside stocked with a pool table, foosball, air hockey, stereo, guitars, a refrigerator and couches. . . The story was written Thursday. A call to the Pearce house later that afternoon was intended to let them know and to double-check a couple of things.

Sadly, that is when Brauch learned that Kevin had been injured earlier in the day. Read the rest of the story by clicking the link.

Kevin Pearce Was Wearing A Helmet

by The Editors on January 2, 2010

Kevin PearceIn a release this evening (January 2, 2010, 5 PM PT) from Kevin Pearce’s representatives at Mosaic Management we learned a couple new details of KP’s accident. Number one, he was wearing a helmet. And secondly, he hooked up on his toeside edge after completing the double cork, and third, that he still has a long way to go.

Here is what the doctors are saying:

. . . Holly Ledyard, M.D., a Neurointensivist (a physician with specialized education and training in critical neurological conditions) at University of Utah Health Care states….“Kevin sustained a severe traumatic brain injury. He is currently in intensive care and in critical condition, but stable and has not needed to undergone surgery at this time. He is intubated and being kept sedated. The focus over the next week will be watching for any swelling in his brain and keeping his brain pressure normal. Kevin has a long recovery ahead of him.”

Kevin Pearce Seriously Injured

by The Editors on December 31, 2009

N232366118918 3348This morning (Thursday December 31, 2009) while training in the Park City Halfpipe snowboarder Kevin Pearce, 22, was seriously injured during a “double cork,” according to a story in the New York Times.

Pearce’s mother, Pia, said that she was told that Pearce hit his head against the edge of the half pipe and was knocked unconscious. He was taken to the University of Utah Hospital in Salt Lake City, she said, where doctors planned external ventricular drainage to relieve fluid buildup. They hoped to lessen the sedation after surgery, she said, hoping he would regain consciousness.

Our thoughts are with Kevin and his family and friends.

[Update 10:06 AM Jan. 1, 2010: The New York Times reports that Kevin is still in “critical condition” this morning and “A spokeswoman for the Pearce family, Danielle Burch, declined to say on Friday morning whether Pearce was conscious. The hospital is not providing further information at the family’s request.” Click here for a facebook well-wishes page.]

[Update 3:09 PM PT: The University of Utah Hospital has confirmed that Kevin Pearce is in their hospital and is currently listed in critical condition. According to ESPN Pearce suffered a concussion during qualifying at the US Grand Prix at Copper Mountain on December 11, 2009.]

SIA14: Show Kicks Off In Stoney Denver

by The Editors on January 31, 2014

12236660864 F330275Ac5 C
Just look at all those sweaty balls and stinking trade show feet!

The SIA Snow Show kicked off in Denver, Colorado yesterday with snowy streets, a warm convention center, and the omnipresent smells of weed (Okay, we’re guessing on that last part. We thought we’d be able to smell it from here, but we can’t.) The Western states may not know it, but according to the SIA’s RetailTrak report for the August through December 2013 period, the industry set a new sales record of $2.2 billion at retail. So we’ve got that going for us. We’re also guessing that local marijuana merchants will experience similar sales spikes this weekend. What other news did you miss if you weren’t there? A little Olympic fever, it seems:

The Show kicked off with a special “Sendoff to Sochi” Opening Ceremony led by Doug Lewis, 1984 &1988 Olympian and Alpine Analyst for Universal Sports. Lewis named team members and revealed the official uniforms for the U.S. Alpine, Freestyle, Freeski and Snowboarding teams developed by Spyder, Columbia, The North Face and Burton. . . “The relationship between SIA and USSA is really pivotal to the success of our athletes,” said Tom Kelly, Vice President Communications, USSA. “USSA athletes could not accomplishment their goals without the support we get from the industry and the companies that supply us with ski, snowboards, outerwear and uniforms,” . . The Opening Ceremony also included video messages from athletes to the industry, thanking them for their support and encouragement. Officials from the city of Denver, U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association (USSA), SIA Board Members and industry leaders took to the stage to officially ring in the Snow Show with cowbells. To wrap things up, Klaus Obermeyer added his signature yodel, which he’s done at the end of the Snow Show for over 30 years.

Sounds to inviting. Doesn’t it? While we continue to man the controls, click the links below for up-to-the minute coverage from all the poor saps who had to make the dreary trudge to Denver from one more year from the SIA fun zone:

Yobeat’s Justin Leveille Buys Weed And Hits The Show
Snowboard Magazine’s Day 1
Transworld Snowboarding’s Day 1
Snowboarder’s Day 1
Transworld Business’s Day 1

And, you’re correct. GrindMedia is paying not one, not two, but three separate editorial crews to follow each other around talking to the same people, shooting the same photos, and drinking the same beer in Denver. Occasionally we do pine for the days of big media redundancy! For the official word from the SIA, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

IPod & Clark Win Burton Euro Open Halfpipe

by The Editors on March 5, 2012

Beo Crowd

Kelly Clark won her fifth Burton European Open and 16th halfpipe event since December 2010 in the finals at Laax, Switzerland on Saturday, March 3, 2012. She did it with a frontside 900, backside 540, a massive frontside 1080 finishing off with a Cab 720 Mute. Not bad at all. Gretchen Bleiler apparently completed a run and finished second followed by Japan’s Yuki Furihata.

On the men’s side Iouri Podladtchikov put down a nice series of tricker treats: frontside 900 Tail Grab, a backside 900 Mute Grab, a frontside Double Cork 1080 frontside grab ending a cab Double Cork 1080 Mute Grab to take the event with his second run. His first run was reportedly very bad. Danny “back in the saddle” Davis finished second followed by Japan’s Ryo Aono.

Wish we could say more, but we missed the whole contest. Luckily, we can watch it all in replay mode right here and so can you.

Burton Opens Craig Kelly Proto Facility

by The Editors on January 13, 2011

Today Burton Snowboards officially dedicated the 10,000 square foot Craig Kelly Proto Facility, a new “state-of-the-art” prototype manufacturing facility, in Burlington, Vermont.

Craig Kelly was an engineer at heart, and one of the big reasons he chose to ride for Burton back in the late eighties was because he saw how committed we were to R&D and taking snowboard technology to the next level,” said Jake Burton, Founder and CEO of Burton Snowboards. “During the 15 years that he rode for Burton, Craig had a huge impact on snowboard design, technology and the sport as a whole. So it was an easy decision to name the new prototyping facility after him. I think that Craig would be proud that every new board that comes out of our new R&D space reflects his spirit and legacy.”

Mike Ranquet, Terje Haakonsen, and Kevin Pearce were all in attendance. Follow the jump for the official details and photos.

Is Big Money Killing Snowboarding?

by The Editors on April 25, 2010

Olympians Obama 0421Time Magazine asks the age old action sports question: Is Snowboarding Getting Spoiled by Big Money, and Big Risks? Writer Christina Crapanzano then dives into the now cliché story of Shaun White vs. Kevin Pearce. It’s the over-simplified story of one snowboarder who risks everything learning a new trick and goes on to become a huge celebrity and the other who took the same risk and ended up in the hospital with a traumatic brain injury.

As the money and risks rise, the loss for snowboarding could be the very things that draw so many to the sport — its accessibility, esprit de corps and sheer pleasure. “I really believe that it will never lose that — it can’t lose that primarily because snowboarding is really fun,” Rice says. “That’s the base of it. It’s as simple as that.”

We have to agree with Travis. Forget all the Olympic hoopla, the media, the big dollar sponsorship and go hike a hill. It’s still fun. And they can never take that away. Not even in the pages of Time Magazine.
