The minds behind Girl Skateboards (Mike Carroll, Rick Howard, Megan Baltimore, and Spike Jonze) have decided that now is a good time to do a little work with other people’s money. In this case private equity firm Altamont Capital’s money, according to a Kailee Bradstreet story on Transworld Business.
“Our conversation with Altamont began last year,” Girl Co-founder Megan Baltimore says. “We weren’t actively looking for investors when we first met them, but everything they were working on was very interesting and relevant to us. Partnering with them helps us accelerate what we want to do with our brands and what we want to do for skateboarding.”
Girl (and their brands) are joining Fox, Mervin, HUF, Dakine, and Brixton in Altamont’s growing action sporting mall portfolio. Congrats to them. We hope they enjoy the money and use some of it to keep fighting the good fight.

The gallery is proud to present this group survey on moving across mental states, international borders, state lines, genres and societal expectations that shows three larger-than-life journeys coming together for a moment in time. . . As American artists from the same generation, Pendleton, Plock, and Adams use paint and wood, and all three have personal backgrounds in skateboarding – and that’s where similarities end and differences begin – which is how the exhibition gets its title.

The skateboarding community lost another good one on Thursday, September 28, 2012 when Ian Barry, 22, of Encinitas, California died from injuries he sustained in an apparent tumble down a cliff at Encinitas’ Moonlight Beach, according to a story in on NBC San Diego.
At about 3 a.m., Ian Barry was found at the base of a 100-foot cliff in Encinitas by a bystander who was out for a walk. . . . Barry, a well-known skater in the North County known by his friends as “Poods,” was discovered with life-threatening injuries and was unconscious when medics arrived.
Barry was then transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California, but succumbed to his injuries. Barry had been a Brixton team skater who was then hired to work at the Oceanside, California based clothing company. He’d worked at Brixton for the past three years and was an important member of the Brixton Family, according to company co-founder David Stoddard.
Ian “Poods” Barry. Never met anyone with a heart as big as his. He thought of everyone before himself. He loved his family, friends, skateboarding and motorcycles. We’re going to miss skating our bowl and going on adventures with you brother. Thanks for always making us feel special and showing us how we should all love one another. You had a personality like no other and we’re proud to call you our family. Your legacy will live on forever.
Our thoughts are Ian’s friends and family.

After walking the packed aisles of the Agenda NYC show last week in Soho it is no surprise that organizers are now calling it the “most successful New York show since its inception in 2003.”
“The biggest highlight of this show is the new location,” said Aaron Levant, Agenda President. “This is one of the biggest fashion hubs in the world and being so central has really helped boost the attendance and importance. We’re just scratching the surface.”
