Brazil’s Ricardo Dos Santos and Tahiti’s Heiarri Williams took the two wildcard spots in the Air Tahiti Nui VonZipper Trials at Teahupo’o. Dos Santos won the trials and Williams (who has won the trials twice before) finished in second place.

“I feel amazing, it’s been a long day of getting barrelled and having fun in front of friends. To qualify for the main event is the best thing that could have happened today, so for that I am so stoked. I’ve been here the last four years and training I don’t know what the conditions will be like next week, but I don’t care. I’m ready,” said Santos.

The waiting period for the Billabong Pro Tahiti begins Saturday, August 20, 2011. For the rest of the details, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Billabong Pro J-Bay Window Opens Tonight

by The Editors on July 14, 2010

News Slater Topseed

Remember that old 2010 ASP World Tour that was going on earlier this year? The one that featured a nine-time world champion going for his 10th title? The tour we’ve all pretty much forgotten about since Brazilian rookie Jadson Andre won the Billabong Pro Santa Catarina on April 29, 2010? Well, it looks like it may be back on at 11 PM PST tonight as the Billabong Pro J-Bay kicks off day one of the waiting period. First call will be at 10 PM PST (7 AM July 15, 2010 local time) And it looks like it will go:

Excitement is mounting for the event as Surfline, the official surf forecasters for the Billabong Pro J-Bay, predict ideal 2 to 2.5 metre waves with bigger sets and favourable weather conditions at Supertubes for Thursday (15 July), the opening of the 11-day waiting period that runs until Sunday 25 July. Contest director Mike Parsons (USA) will be keen to get the event underway and then pick the best conditions for the approximately four days of competition required to crown the 2010 champion.

First in the water will be Taylor Knox, Luke Munro, and Adam Melling. That is if everyone made it. We heard that a 7 PM flight from Atlanta to Johannesburg last night was delayed until 4 AM this morning. Kelly Slater was reportedly on the flight “calmly freaking out” along with several other pros. Guess we’ll know if they made it when their heats are called.

Click here to watch it live or follow the jump for the official ASP release and the round one draw.

Von Zipper Stabs A Shark Fin

by The Editors on November 2, 2009

Sharkfin

Apparently, for the past two years Australia’s Stab Magazine and Von Zipper have gotten together to throw a “water themed” party. This year’s was yesterday (November 1, 2009) and it was called Shark Fin Soup.

This year, a barge is parked 50 metres offshore from the Sydney harbour beach of Athol Bay, a beach famous for its white sand, blue water and occasional White Pointer sharks. . . Six cigarette boats pull in close to the party and point their snouts at the barge. On one, Vogue photographer Richard Freeman is shooting two girls for a feature in this magazine’s December issue.

As one of the commenters on the Stabmag.com said, “Shallow, vacuous, self-absorbed, self-important, selfish, extravagant, ridiculous, flamboyant, gay, drug-fuelled, over-the-top stupidity. There are children starving in this world because they can’t find one or two dollars to buy some food. I expect an invite next year.”
