Mick Fanning Throws In The Towel

by The Editors on July 23, 2008

Mick-Fanning2307After only five events on this year’s ASP WCT Tour it’s looking more and more like Kelly Slater has a lock on number 9, number 9, number 9. Even defending world champ Mick Fanning is beginning to talk like a beaten man, according to Australia’s Goldcoast.com.au.

“I guess it’s not over till it’s over, but it’s like climbing Everest and he’s halfway up the bloody hill,” said Fanning, who would have to win four of the remaining six events to stand a chance of beating ‘superman’ Slater. . . Fanning was disgusted at his performance in the final at Jeffreys Bay, knowing he let a prime opportunity to keep the title race alive slip through his fingers. . . “I surfed like an idiot,” said Fanning. “I just had a shocker. I was feeling great. I just couldn’t stay on my board.”

No worries, Mick. You just fell prey to the Slater mind warp.

Mick Fanning Gets Knotty

by The Editors on March 16, 2008

Pm Fanning Narrowweb 300X464,0Goldcoast.com.au has the full rundown of surfing’s version of the royal wedding on the Goldie March 15, 2008, as APS World Champion Mick Fanning married Karissa Dalton.

Despite the lavish setting for the wedding, Ms Osborne said the outdoor ceremony and reception which ran until midnight with a swing band were kept low key to reflect the couple’s down-to-earth nature. “It was just people who were of longstanding support to Mick and Karissa who were at the wedding,”she said. Ms Osborne said the bride looked particularly stunning in her white, designer wedding dress.

So far no photos from any of the surf mags. Maybe the special deal the Fannings made with “a women’s magazine also meant no other media were allowed in for the the ceremony.”

Mick and the Boys Get All Beered Up

by The Editors on October 24, 2017

Beer rules. There’s nothing better than hanging with the mates pounding beer after beer after beer. The buzz comes on. The talk gets loud, ya fecking kint. Beer spittle spackles your faces, and what you’re saying becomes the single most important concept in the universe, “No, no, wait, listen, shut up. . . ya, keeding?” Oh, yeah. Beer truly is the nectar of the gods. But the sad thing about beer is that with all this upside there just aren’t enough craft breweries, especially in Australia.

Well, luckily Mick FanningStirling HowlandJoel Parkinson, Bede Durbidge, Josh KerrAnthony MacDonald and Sean Ronan are here to right that wrong with Balter Brewing Company, according to a story on Nine.com.au.

“I’m proud of our team,” says Fanning. “Of the founders, four of us surf for a living and the other three are amazing at business – whether it be operations, marketing and branding or most importantly, the beer.” . . . Despite the big names associated with the brewery, both Fanning and Howland stress that Balter is bigger than any individual. “It was always about Balter and making the best beer we possibly could,” says Fanning. “From the beginning it was never about any of us boys.”

Nope. Not about the boys, just about the beer — the best beer ever.

With his win over Jordy Smith in the 2014 Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal on Monday, October 20, 2014, Mick Fanning has moved right into the number two spot behind Gabriel Medina in the ASP World Rankings. As we all know, Mick is not someone to mess with at Pipeline. He is a ruthless and constant competitor. Let’s just say he was very happy with his win.

“I am just so stoked,” said Fanning. “I didn’t really think about a win to tell you the truth, it just happened. Jordy (Smith) surfed amazing, John John (Florence) surfed amazing, Kai (Otton) too. Everyone has been ripping this whole Euro leg and I’m just stoked I got to get a result out of it. It feels so good to get a win, it’s been five years since I won here, so I am very stoked. Going into Hawaii with a title on the line is so stressful, but I guess I will just deal with that when I get there. For now I’ll just enjoy the win here.”

Good on ’em, hey? Both Carissa Moore and Mick Fanning were over the moon with wins in the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach and Tyler Wright and Taj Burrow added another second place finish to their surfing resumes.

Fanning said:

“After that result (13th) in Margaret River I went home and worked really hard and I’m so pleased that the hard work paid off. Congratulations to Taj (Burrow), I’ve never been so nervous for nine minutes of my life, he surfed amazingly,” said Mick Fanning. “We got to surf everywhere at this event which was awesome, we got to surf the Bowl, Rincon and to finish at Winkipop. It’s always been my dream to surf a Heat at Winkipop. This is such a special event for me and I feel comfortable here. With the calibre of surfers on Tour at the moment there’s never an easy Heat and it keeps it so exciting.”

Moore said (after claiming to be “speechless”:

“That was an amazing Final,” Moore said. “We were having such a blast, I just wanted to talk to Tyler (Wright) because the waves were so fun and it felt like we were having a fun free surf. I know she’s such an amazing surfer and will be in ASP World Title contention at the end of the year, so I knew I had to be at my best. It’s been a long Australian leg with three events in a row and it couldn’t have been much better for me, two wins and a quarterfinal and to finish by winning at Bells is so unique and special.”

Fanning Makes It Four At Quiksilver Pro France

by The Editors on October 4, 2013

Fanningwinssmall

Mick Fanning stuck to his speed surfing guns to survive a non-stop aerial assault from Brazilian Gabriel Medina to win his fourth Quiksilver Pro France on Friday, October 4, 2013. Fanning grabbed the first wave and continue to lay down the solid contest surfing while Medina tried all his tricks. Sadly, for the Medina, he had trouble landing his backflip and several other airs that could have made the difference.

Fanning was beside himself. “I’m pretty emotional. Oh my god. I’ve drawn an ace,” Fanning said on the beach. “I never got into rythymn until this morning. for the guys I had to go through in the contest, this is amazing. And Gabi is such an incredible kid. Even with 20 seconds to go I was still wearing brown underwear.”

Both surfers were relentless during the final cranking out 26 scored waves for the judges to mull over. For the official world from the ASP including complete results, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
