Johnny Layton Talks Good & Evil

by The Editors on September 10, 2013

We have an brand new old Johnny Layton deck in our closet. Not gripped. Not mounted. Not nothing. Eric Stricker gave it to us when he really didn’t have to give us anything. And that was cool. Every time we see the board we’re reminded of that. And maybe that’s why we leave that deck right where it is. New, yet old.

In other Johnny Layton news watch this.

As if a wooden iPhone case wasn’t custom enough, Grove (makers of the up-cycled yet stylish Skatecase for iPhone) has launched an all new wood print case. If you have an Instagram photo you can make a case.

In less than a minute, customize a case using your own stunning Instagram photos. We use an advanced custom wood printing method, producing a durable, high quality image that lasts. The beautiful maple wood grain of your case peeks through the printed image, like a signature fingerprint, creating a unique look which can’t be achieved with manufactured materials, such as silicone or plastic.

You could have an iPhone case with a picture of you shredding or your girl’s bits right there on there on the back. The downside? The case costs $99.00 or as much as the new iPhone C on a two-year contract. For all the details follow the jump. [click to continue…]

by The Editors on September 10, 2013

Yobeat.com posted this yesterday, so we’re going to post it today because it made us laugh and put all action sports in proper perspective (at least to us, at this moment in time, today, (redundancy for poetic effect)). Airboarding. We wish we’d thought of it.

Next Up: The Hurley Pro Trestles

by The Editors on September 9, 2013

Smith J2858Hurleypro12Rowland

Hard to believe that next week ASP World Tour stops off in Southern California for The Hurley Pro at Trestles. All the locals have to say is that they certainly hope the surf picks up because it’s been pretty bad lately. The contest runs from September 15 to 21, 2013 at SoCal legendary surf spot and ASP World Champion Joel Parkinson is looking forward to it apparently.

“I love Trestles,” Parkinson said. “It’s such a high performance wave and I think everyone acknowledges that, but it’s also a great ‘flow’ wave. It’s a great wave to flow your turns together and choreograph a wave and make it look great from beginning to end. Trestles – when it’s on – is the kind of wave where everyone looks good. In terms of results, Kelly (Slater) and Mick (Fanning) are always good there, Taj (Burrow) and Jordy (Smith) will be in the mix, and I reckon Gabe (Medina) and Julian (Wilson) are big chances as well.”

Get ready, SoCal. For the official word from the ASP, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

Luke Mitrani Recovering From Broken Neck

by The Editors on September 9, 2013

Screen-Shot-2013-09-05-At-9.31.51-Am

It’s old news if you’ve been following along, but good news compared to what could have happened when Luke Mitrani came down hard on a fronside double fork 1080 attempt in New Zealand and broke his neck (fractured his C5 vertebra) on September 2, 2013, according to a story on GrindTV.com.

. . . [Mitrani] underwent a successful surgery and is currently recovering. In less than two weeks he’ll be back in the U.S., where he will continue the rehabilitation and physical therapy that he has already started in Christchurch. He is expected by doctors to make a full recovery within six to twelve months, though that time frame will have him sidelined for the rest of this winter season, which means he will not be able to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

Phew. This was another really close call for the Frends crew. And we’re glad Luke is up and walking around. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery! Having nurse Nadja Purtschert there by his side can’t be a bad thing. . .

Element’s Julian Davidson Goes Pro

by The Editors on September 9, 2013

What does “going pro” even mean in skateboarding these days? Does it mean the skater is finally getting paid? No. Does it mean they guy is competing in “pro contests”? No. After years of asking everyone we know what “going pro” means and getting a different answer each time we’ve finally figured it out. If you get a “pro model” anything and someone promotes you as having gone pro, then you’re pro. Take Julian Davidson for instance. Element just bumped him up to the “pro team” and gave him a “pro model” so the dude is pro. Period. Congrats, Julian.

Monday Morning Boogie Boogie: We Got It All

by The Editors on September 9, 2013

According to a post on Bodyboard Museum, the lead singer was Brett Young:

As a member of the Skid Kids his outlaw antics were often looked down on by b/b heirachy. Youngy didn’t care too much and despised the local comp scene that frothed over contests in 1ft waves at Manly. Youngy was all about pulling into gnarly pits and had the same head pumping style as Pat Caldwell. Brett had tongues wagging when he performed a pop song in the video nasty Rip The Pit. He was highly criticized for his role and eventually packed his bags to move to Japan where he worked promoting his sponsor Manta. It was in Japan that BY was killed when the car he was driving on a express lane highway crashed. Today he is remembered with the annual Brett Young Trials part of The Shark Island Challenge.

And now you know the rest of the. . .

Matix Clothing + Tyler Surfboards

by The Editors on September 6, 2013

Matix Clothing worked with Tyler Surfboard’s Tyler Hatzikian on a spring 2013 collection that they say offers up “timeless style, performance, hot rod culture and surfings roots.”

Tyler Hatzikian has over 25-years of commitment to improving his skills as both a shaper and glasser. Tyler’s surfboards are not only far from replica, they are developing a reputation of being iconic on their own. He is proud to carry on the planer after following the footsteps of the legendary craftsmen of his local surf community in the South Bay.

The collection sounds right on target. Now we just have to survive the winter before we get our hands on it.
