Altamont x Bill Owens

by The Editors on August 11, 2009

Bill-Owens-1We always thought Altamont was a great name for a clothing company. Not because of the huge 1969 concert where a Hell’s Angel stabbed and killed a gun-toting meth head while the Rolling Stones played on, but because it is a nice word. Altamont. It just sounds good.

Now, Andrew Reynolds and and crew are going deeper into Altamont “the event” with a collaboration with photographer Bill Owens. His photos captured the concert at Altamont like no one else and now those same photos are on Altamont clothing. We’re not really down with the whole summer of love hippie thing, nor do we want any of them on our t-shirts, but the photos are amazing works of art.

Bill is character. He started the first brewery with an on site bar in the US… Buffalo Bills Brewery in Hayward, CA… home of the Pumpkin Ale.

I tended bar during school for 3 years and one day, many years after a new older bought the brewery, Bill strolled in and brewed a good ‘ol conversation. He told me stories about the giant Buffalo head that hangs over the bar, the size of the original bar and disclosed tons of info on the on going battle between him and the current owner over name ownership.

I finally met the “character” that so many long-time locals had told stories about. Along with starting the first brewery/bar in the US and being a world renowned photographer … Bill Ownes is a character with a deep pocket full of classic stories.
