Lopez started his surfing career at an early age, becoming Hawaii State Champ at age 14 and frequently surfing Ala Moana Bowls. He went on to win the Pipeline Masters competition in 1972 and 1973. In 1999 he was selected “Waterman of the Year” by the Surf Industries Manufacturing Association. He was instrumental in the commercial manufacturing of surfboards, which led to his own surfboard brand. He has appeared in numerous surf films and documentaries, and has authored the book “Surf is Where You Find It.” A native of Hawaii, Lopez now lives in Bend, Oregon with his family where he enjoys snowboarding and organizes an annual competition at Mt. Bachelor called the Big Wave Challenge modeled after surfing.
