Former US Masters Surfing Champion Barry Ault, 71, died from a staff infection after surfing in San Diego, California the week before Christmas 2014 following rain storms, according to a story on NBC 7 San Diego.

Barry had gone surfing at Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma, just two days after a rainstorm. It’s still not clear if that staph infection came from storm runoff into the water that day, as there are several storm drains around Sunset Cliffs that empty into the ocean.

According to other reports, several of his friends also got sick that day, but the others recovered. Sometimes when the waves are that good it’s difficult for all of us to stay out of the water after a storm. Especially when it’s been a place that has so often offered an escape from most everything that troubles. Our thoughts are with Ault’s family and friends.
