Competitors got an early start today (March 8, 2012) in the Burton US Open of Snowboarding Halfpipe Semi-Finals and it’s a good thing they did because by the end of the day’s event the pipe was getting pretty warm and slushy. Lucky for Greg Bretz (above) he put down his frontside melon, backside inverted 900 mute, frontside 1080 tail grab, Cab 720 mute and a frontside double cork 1080 indy run right away and got to watch everyone try to beat it. No one did. Danny Davis and Louie Vito came the closest. The 13 qualifiers from the semi-finals will join former event winners Danny Kass, Kazuhiro Kokubo, and reportedly Shaun White (though he has a history of bailing on the US Open at the last moment) in the finals.

In the women’s comp Elena Hight continued her dominating ways and threw her “banger backside method, frontside 720 melon grab, Cab 720 mute grab, frontside indy grab, backside 900 no grab and an alley pop backside rodeo indy grab. Elena, Arielle Gold, Gretchen Bleiler and and four other qualifiers will join Kelly Clark in the halfpipe finals on Saturday, March 10, 2012.
