Frontrunners like Kelly Slater (USA), 39, reigning 10-time ASP World Champion, Owen Wright (AUS), 21, and Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, will do battle alongside newcomers Gabriel Medina (BRA), 17, Miguel Pupo (BRA), 19, and John John Florence (HAW), 18, and the cobblestone lefts and rights of Lower Trestles.

“This week at Trestles you will see a continuation of the kind of surfing we witnessed last week in New York,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “High performance waves lead to high performance surfing. Progression and Innovation will once again play a major part. Having said that, power surfing in the critical section of the wave will continue to score high – and I will reiterate that power surfing does not necessarily refer to simply rail work. There are soft turns and there are power turns, just like there are soft airs and power airs. At this level of competition, and in a wave like Lower Trestles, it will be difficult for someone to advance unless they’re exhibiting power surfing on most every section of the wave. The level of surfing is just too good to get by otherwise.”

“As we saw last week, not all aerial maneuvers score high,” Porta continued. “Flat lateral rotations in non-critical sections did not get much of a score last week, the same will happen this week. The bottom line is if your going above the lip it has to be technically correct as well as good height and the more critical the section the better. Combination of major maneuvers also is an important part here as the surfers that flow from turn to turn with no down time also scores well. The final concept that scores well here is variety of maneuvers, you will see the surfers that mix it up while performing to above concepts get suitably rewarded. Year in, year out, Lower Trestles is always an event we look forward to as it sets the standard for high-performance surfing around the world.”

Surfline, official forecaster for the Hurley Pro at Trestles, are calling for a series of small south-southwest to south swells to move in over the first few days of the event waiting period to offer contestable surf. Smaller, fading surf will prevail for the last couple days of the waiting period.

When competition commences, up first will be Jeremy Flores (FRA), 23, Matt Wilkinson (AUS), 22, and Taylor Knox (USA), 40, in the opening heat of Round 1.

The Hurley Pro at Trestles will be webcast LIVE via http://www.hurley.com/hurleypro/ from September 18 through 24, 2011.
