Pacific Sunwear Is A Loser

by The Editors on May 23, 2011

Pacsun LogoWall Street Strategies senior analyst Brian Sozzi had some things to say to Benzinga.com about the winners and losers in the “apparel sector” and he wasn’t all that complimentary about PacSun.

In a world where Zumiez is winning and certain teen apparel departments within department stores are winning, there has to be a loser, and Pacific Sunwear is a loser. When I look at their balance sheet, if they cannot show signs of life by the back-to-school shopping season, which I think is going to be the case, I’m wondering if they’re going to have problems getting supply for the holiday selling season.”

It seems that dressing might not be the the only thing they’re doing irresponsibly at the company. To hear more of Sozzi’s thoughts click here for an entire podcast. To read a financial report from PacSun’s Q1 (in which they lost $31 million) click here.

PAC SUN IS DONE…..EVERYONE KNOWS THE PARTY IS OVER.

I EVEN HEARD FROM SOMEONE THAT WORKS AT PAC THAT THE PARTY IS OVER AND THEY ARE ALL PREPARED FOR THE WORSE.

AND….I WOULDN’T CONSIDER ZUMIEZ A WINNER…HAVE YOU SEEN A ZUMIEZ STORE…TRAIN WRECK.

THE BRANDS DON’T HAVE STRONG RETAIL….IT’S GOING TO BE INTERESTING.

yeah right May 24, 2011 at 1:45 pm

poor volcom and gucci, thats what happens when you put so many eggs in 1 basket

REAL DEAL May 27, 2011 at 3:15 pm

YEAH RIGHT…VOLCOM, GUCCI, AND PAC WILL ALL BE FINE WITH THEIR EGGS….

PAC HAS POSTED AN INCREASE IN SALES AND VOLCOM WILL MAKE A BIG SALE.

PAC SUN IS THE BEST RETAILER AND NO MATTER WHAT IS SAID BY WALL STREET, PAC SUN WILL REMAIN THE BEST RETAILER THIS INDUSTRY HAS TO DATE.

yeah right May 28, 2011 at 8:28 am

how many real deals are there. THe second sounds like a volcom exec. Well I am going to spend less with volcom, and I pay my bills, does pac sun? I hear they got some good debt? If you think they are such a great retailer, then why is there stock in the toilet

REAL DEAL May 28, 2011 at 12:10 pm

The Real Deal is 1 guy, so don’t think you are that smart. I don’t work for Volcom.

You have to acknowledge Pac Sun as the strongest retailer in the actions sports market. Pac Sun has been a huge asset to the industry and the industry needs Pac Sun. The days of spending money throwing industry parties and beach parties should end and the focus should be on becoming a more profitable company.

Why don’t you stop your hate on the message boards and wish another retailer like Pac Sun and a great brand like Volcom the best. Come on, if everyone could succeed, that would be a good thing.

My point is simple. This industry needs to end the party and focus on the bottom line in order to weather the economic storm……

yeah right May 29, 2011 at 8:17 am

your confusing, one post pac sun is done, the next post its the best retailer.
You are living in the past obviously, it shows your age. The only reason pac sun has any relevancy is because of their size. The reason I think volcom is so lame is their selling out with such ease. WHen they are selling the stone at jc penny and kohls you will probably feel the same way. I just can’t respect that. You can call it what you want, but the truth hurts sometime huh.

REAL DEAL May 29, 2011 at 5:36 pm

I never said Pac is done….I said the party is over…meaning all brands and retailers need to end the industry party mentality and focus on the bottom line.

Pac Sun is legit, I was just in one of their locations this afternoon. They continue to better their product offering and the look of their stores is amazing.

I could care less about Volcom and who they sell too….that is their business and they will run their business how they would like.

Yeah Right, you need to worry less about Pac, Volcom, and everything else you seem to blow smoke about.

Remember, it’s time to REPENT. REPENT buddy…..

yeah right May 30, 2011 at 8:07 am

I knew you were going to get all religious. It is obvious you have been drinking the kool aid. You may call it worry, I call it concern for an industry.

REAL DEAL May 30, 2011 at 8:21 am

Yeah Right….I love Kool Aid…you are a smart guy.

Worry or Concern, same thing.

Don’t be concerned. You have a great shop in Nor Cal and the SON is coming soon.

Have a great day, look forward to the next interaction!!!

yeah right May 30, 2011 at 4:27 pm

did you mean sun, cause I really need some of that.
thanks

REAL DEAL May 30, 2011 at 9:29 pm

Son or Sun…they are both coming to NOR CAL soon.

Take care buddy!

After reading through some previous comments, i want to make sure my statements are clear, as somethings are left vague on message boards. Some readers take statements and run in different direction. Yeah Right is a good example of a reader that want’s to see a company like Pac Sun fail and that is not cool……

“PAC SUN IS DONE…..EVERYONE KNOWS THE PARTY IS OVER”.

The statement above is referring to the days of industry parties is over, and it’s time to focus on the bottom line. It appears that Pac Sun is doing everything to weather the storm and I wish them the best.

“I EVEN HEARD FROM SOMEONE THAT WORKS AT PAC THAT THE PARTY IS OVER AND THEY ARE ALL PREPARED FOR THE WORSE”.

The statement above is referring to a friends statement and He was clear that business at Pac Sun is serious and it’s not time to mess around. He expressed his fear that the economy is going to get weaker before it get’s stronger and the party days of the industry are over.

Time to focus on the bottom line and not the next industry party……

“AND….I WOULDN’T CONSIDER ZUMIEZ A WINNER…HAVE YOU SEEN A ZUMIEZ STORE…TRAIN WRECK”.

The statement about Zumiez is vague as well. It’s clear in the article that the article reflects Zumiez being better than Pac. I feel that is a matter of opinion. Pac Sun in my opinion has a better merchandised store. Zumiez may have a stronger financial position and hats off to Zumiez for great performance. Both Zumiez and Pac Sun are assets to the industry and may the best man win…..

The bottom line, Pac Sun and Zumiez are both very successful retailers. The results of the economy have damaged a great deal of businesses. The industry needs successful retailers such as Pac Sun and Zumiez, as the retailer is the gateway to the consumer.

Best wishes to Pac Sun and Zumiez………

Oh…one more for the road and I’m done with this chain….

My comment about “THE BRANDS DON’T HAVE STRONG RETAIL….IT’S GOING TO BE INTERESTING”.

Business is much like an ECO SYSTEM. In business you need strong brands, strong retailers, and a strong customer base in order to produce strong results.

The industry has lost so much good retail along the way and it’s very sad. The comment made about the brands not having strong retail stems from the fact that retail is constricting and not as strong as it once was several years ago.

Kind of like the too many rats to little cheese theory.

Let’s hope for a strong turn around as I have many friend in retail and many friends that work for industry brands.

It’s time to pull together and help eachother, as this industry is very special.

Positive Vibes…..

yeah right June 6, 2011 at 7:44 am

Well you are right about one thing, Being number one sure can make you lose focus. This has happened to alot of big companies.
On another note, those mall chains ALL use industry brands to suck customers in to the store, then they try to sell them the private label brands. That is not supporting the industry, And you are correct YEAH RIGHT would not mind pac sun’s and stores like that fail, because I think they are leeches on the industry. Also I could care less if volcom runs ads in mens health, That is no reason to sell to lame stores. So in truth selling out to run a million ads is not something I would do if I was wooly
