Introduces $10,000 Adaptive Skate Contest

Life Rolls On Foundation will host the They Will Skate Again SHOE CITY Open on Saturday, June 25 at the Venice Skate Park in Venice Beach, CA. The day-long event will include an adaptive skateboard clinic for quadriplegics, paraplegics and amputees; a professional skate exhibition; and adaptive skate contest featuring a prize purse of $10,000.

“They Will Skate Again” is a spin-off of Life Rolls On’s popular and award-winning adaptive surfing program “They Will Surf Again.” Through the platform of action sports, LRO helps individuals discover the limitless possibilities beyond paralysis. This is the second They Will Skate Again event hosted by Life Rolls On, which launched the program in March, 2010.

“We were stoked by the warm welcome we received from the skate community when we introduced They Will Skate Again last year,” said Jesse Billauer, Founder and Director of National Outreach for Life Rolls On. “Having SHOE CITY sponsor a competition, which allows athletes to compete like pros, takes this event to a whole new level. I’m excited that we can promote skating as a tool to demonstrate how much one can accomplish despite a disability.”

Participants in the They Will Skate Again SHOE CITY Open adaptive skate clinic will be treated to expert instruction by professional chairskaters Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham and Christiaan “Otter” Bailey, while professional skater and industry pioneer of the Dogtown Z-Boys Jim Muir will lead the coaching of adaptive stand-up skaters.

“I wanted to create an opportunity for people living with paralysis and those who use prosthetics to showcase their talents,” said Bruce Lee, a spokesperson for the Whittier, CA-based SHOE CITY, which is the event’s title sponsor. “A skate park can be intimidating, so I hope in partnering with Life Rolls On, we can encourage adaptive skaters, and those who want to skate again, to celebrate their unique abilities!”

There is no cost to participate and prior skate experience is not necessary to register for the adaptive skate workshop. Complimentary safety equipment is also provided. For safety, the SHOE CITY Open adaptive skate contest is open only to experienced adaptive skaters.

Sponsorship opportunities are still available and Life Rolls On is currently accepting registration for skaters, volunteers and coaches.
