Like many people who were on their way home from the ASR show, we exited at Carlsbad’s La Costa Blvd. To check out the Vans El Ponto Loco WQS 2 Star event that’s been going on for the last three days. Shey Yates (above) got up under it, but ended up fourth in heat #4 of the quarter finals.
By the time the finals rolled around the wind was up, the tide was up, and it seemed like the entire heats would go by with only three or four waves. That didn’t stop any of the surfers from making the most of the almost non-existant surf. Here are the results:
Jr. Pro:
- Nat Young USA
- Blake Jones USA
- Brent Reilly USA
- Andrew Doheny USA
Men’s:
- Casey Brown HAW
- Dilon Perillo USA
- Jason Collins USA
- Brad Ettinger USA
Here’s a little more of what we saw:
Mike Parsons with one of the best “who’s the doad with the camera” looks we’ve gotten in quite a while. Kelly Slater, Jim Hogan and the rest of the crew hanging out back by the PCH.

The girl in the middle has braces and she doesn’t want you to see them. Not even for a second. Seriously. That’s as far as she will smile.
Yes, occasionally Ponto gets some just don’t tell anyone.
Peter Mel getting the word from Casey Brown, after he won Heat #4 in the men’s semi-finals.
It felt like we were the only people who weren’t getting paid to be here.
Austin Ford on his way out to Billabong Pro Jr. quarter final #1.
Nat Young winning the Billabong Jr. Pro in a heat that saw very few waves.
Casey Brown on the unusually high scoring way that gave him the win.
Andrew Doheny, Nat Young, Brent Reilly, and Blake Jones (4, 1, 3, 2)
Brad Ettinger, Jason Collins, Casey Brown, and Dillon Perillo (4,3,1,2)
Some of the epic flag work we saw while on location.
All most people saw of the contest as they fly by on the PCH.
