As Snb Arob200Pro snowboarder Aaron Robinson was reportedly killed Tuesday, July 19, 2011 while riding in the backcountry near El Colorado, Chile, according to a story on ESPN/Action.

Arnau Fernández, the marketing manager at Valle Nevado, Chile, . . . said that Robinson was doing road laps in the area known as Santa Teresita when he fell and hit his head on rocks.

Robinson was the two-time winner of the North Face Masters Tour and was obviously no stranger to big mountain riding. Our thoughts are with his family (especially his brother Jason) and all of his friends.

No Surprises At Billabong Pro J-Bay

by The Editors on July 18, 2011

Bd

When we fell asleep last night the Billabong Pro J-Bay was on hold for a 7:30 AM call. And they went with the first six heats of round two. While contestable waves may have been a bit of a surprise, the results were not. Everyone advances or was eliminated as expected. Ace Buchan had the score of the morning with a 15.80 in his Heat 6 victory over Cory Lopez.

“It’s challenging out there with the inconsistency,” Buchan said. “We’re always in a tough spot when faced with less-than-stellar forecasts, and I think the guys understood that we had to get out there and battle one another. It might not be equal for all heats in a round or all rounds in a contest, but at least it’s equal between each guy in the heat.”

And yes, Kelly Slater missed his heat and is rolling into retirement hunting down perfect waves around the world.

by The Editors on July 15, 2011

Binding Contest

In March, 2011 we mentioned that Bob and Cheryl Zider, the parents of 15-year-old snowboarder who died from snow suffocation while snowboarding at Tahoe, were holding a design competition to help find a binding that would have allowed their 15-year-old son Chris to separate from his snowboard after falling. They hope a new design could help save lives.

The Zider’s have now picked four finalists in the competition. Scott Nisbet, Brad Brinson, Thomas Trudel, and Adam Weisberg all have designs that they thing could win them the $10,000 prize. Click on their names to view the designs and let us know what you think in the comments. We’re not sure there’s anything in the designs to get all that excited about.
