Building A Business With Burton

by The Editors on August 28, 2007

Burtonb

We saw Jake Burton in those American Express ads where he was going to snowboard 100 days a year and pay for it all with his AmEx card, then we caught him in ads for the Wall Street Journal, you know the paper Jake reads when he wants to be an industry titan, and now HP is using Jake to help you start your own business with templates and designs that are downloadable and printable (and some very cool behind the scenes at Burton content as well). His ads were all over CNN/Money site today. We lined some up, but honestly, they’re pretty sucky. They might be good enough to fool the Media Center at the ASR Show and for that it’s probably worth checking out.

Cardiff’s Surf Kook Monument

by The Editors on August 27, 2007

Media Photo 2007-08 32133900When the city of Cardiff-by-th-Sea decided they wanted a statue of a surfer to adorn their city, they hired Matthew Antichevich an artist from Hemet (an inland city 45 miles from The Coast). The statue he delivered has received nothing but heckling since it was unveiled.

Critics say the figure is too spindly, his feet are positioned wrong and his hands are absolutely goofy. Rather than an embodiment of the athletic artistry that is integral to the sport’s mystique, the figure looks like a beginner about to fall off his board. “Surfing is a dance,” said Pezman. “This figure just offends the surf culture. If you did a statue of a ballet dancer, you wouldn’t have the dancer in a position that is all wrong.”

Local surfers have been dressing the statue up. It’s had a bikini top on, a pink shirt, a Mexican wrestling mask and most recently a black hood to make it look like the “the infamous Abu Ghraib photo” of a prisoner standing on a box. We’ll see how long the statue survives. . . it may not be long.

Billabong’s Up And The Shares Come Down

by The Editors on August 24, 2007

Even though Billabong has reported a net profit of $167.25 million (up 14.6 percent) for 2006/07, and sales revenue that grew 20.1 per cent to $1.22 billion, shares in the company still fell five percent after the announcement today.

Sales in the Americas, the group’s biggest region, rose in the double digits, while EBITDA rose by 12.3 per cent to $US111.9 million ($A136.03 million). Mr O’Neill said the Americas region was backed by strong performances in Canada and South America.

Oddly, an analyst “who did not wish to be named” said the Americas were “disappointing” because of the Aussie dollar. Can you be a quoted stock analyst and not wish to be named? We’re all for anonymous comments, but still that seems shady.

Happy Birthday, Mickey!

by The Editors on August 24, 2007

24Munoz1 MdWe missed it, but yesterday was Mickey Muñoz’s 70th birthday party at Doheny State Beach. According to the OC Register the party was the work of the Doheny Longboard Association, the San Onofre Surf Club and the Hawaiian Surf Association.

Guests [weren’t] supposed to bring gifts for Muñoz. Instead, Muñoz said a donation to the Doheny fundraiser will suffice.

We hope the day went well for everyone of the 1,000 guests.

. . . And he’s MCA (Virtually)

by The Editors on August 24, 2007

281X211Activision, the video game publisher, announced today that The Beastie Boys’ MCA will be a unlockable character in “Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground.”

The music legend joins a roster of unlockable bonus skaters that has included superheroes and rock stars from Iron Man to Gene Simmons to last year’s featured franchise guest, Travis Barker. In exclusive images, it appears that MCA will be skateboarding — of all places — on the moon.

The game is coming out in October for Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, and our personal gaming platform of choice, the Nintendo DS.

Skateboarder Killed While Towing

by The Editors on August 23, 2007

There’s really nothing more to say about this than, “That’s sad.” A 15-year-old skateboarder was killed August 22 when he fell while being towed by a vehicle and was run over.

Police have not released the names of either the 15-year-old victim or the 16-year-old driver. The accident took place in an elementary school parking lot. The skateboarder was taken by helicopter to a hospital in critical condition, police said. He later died.

Aniston Stands Up For Paddling?

by The Editors on August 22, 2007

Anistan-1

From the celebrity blog What Would Tyler Durden Do comes these wonderful photos of Jennifer Aniston on vacation with the Arquettes in Hawaii. Here what they had to say:

These pictures, showing Jennifer Aniston on vacation yesterday in Hawaii with Courtney Cox and David Arquette, are boring, but at least no one is electrocuting dogs. I don’t get what she’s even doing. It looks like it has disaster written all over it, like the odds of falling in are the previously uninvented 140 percent. I guess I’m sort of impressed. I couldn’t do this any more than I could run down some rolling barrels on stilts.

She does look pretty comfortable with that paddle in her hands. Dry even. And we know it’s not exactly easy.
