Bonnier Cutting Rate Base

by The Editors on June 29, 2008

Bonnier Corp LogoBonnier Corp, the parent corporation of Transworld Media has announced that they are reducing the rate base on their skiing titles beginning with the September issues, according to a story on DMNews.com.

Skiing will move from a rate base of 400,000 to 300,000, and Ski is going from 450,000 to 400,000. Executives say the reductions are to better focus on key demographics: 18-35-year olds for Skiing, and boomers for Ski. The rate base cuts will not extend to Bonnier’s other skiing titles, which including Women’s Skiing, Boost and SnoWorld. . . “The strategy is to deliver the most committed skiers to our advertisers and to reduce the amount of verified circulation included in the magazine’s rate bases,” noted Dean Turcol, VP of communications for Bonnier, in an e-mail.

We’d say the reductions are more based on fewer people buying the magazines. Or does that just go without saying?

TGR Goes Private Equity

by The Editors on June 20, 2008

Teton Gravity Research, the company most widely known for their ski movies (that occasionally include snowboarding) and their popular website, has been purchased by private equity firm BlackHawk Capital Management for an undisclosed amount, according to a press release posted on Private Equity Hub.

BlackHawk Capital Management recently completed the purchase of Jackson Hole, WY based Teton Gravity Research (TGR), a feature film and TV production company referred to by Outside Magazine as “one of the most influential companies in the outdoor industry.” TGR has produced 23 award winning films and 53 half hours of television programming over the past 12 years while establishing the leading brand in adrenaline sports.

Guess we’ll see how the Jones boys like having business jocks for bosses. They’ll probably be really optimistic about it for about three or four weeks.

Down The Line Is Good

by The Editors on June 2, 2008

Scott Bass and Marty Thomas got a little mainstream love from the San Diego Union-Tribune today.

Bass and Thomas form an articulate, insightful team. The middle-aged tandem packs the show’s hour with commentary and analysis of the week’s surf headlines in an accessible format that serves to extend the issues they cover.

Articulate surfers? Ah, well, let’s just say they do a very nice job. And leave it at that.

Twinzer: Another Action Sports Community

by The Editors on June 2, 2008

Twinzerscreen

Apparently they named it twinzer because it is exactly like every other action sports community.

Twinzer was created by two action sports enthusiasts. . . While the “X-games” sports participants will make up our largest segment of users we extend our community to Kiteboarders, Wakekiters, Wakeskaters, Snowmobilers and others who are not yet mainstream action sports. We see these as sports that will eventually capture the imagination of many and therefore have created a home for them.

Wakekiting, too? Cowagunga!

More Good Reviews For Surfwise

by The Editors on May 30, 2008

66137 AaThe Seattle Post-Intelligencer gives the Paskowitz surf documentary Surfwise a thumbs up.

In another time and place, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz might have been acclaimed a great Jewish mystic. Twentieth-century America dismissed him as an irresponsible parent. Doug Pray’s funny and thought-provoking documentary reassesses the life of this nomadic surfer, who packed his wife and nine kids into a 24-foot camper for a lifetime odyssey that made them the most well-known family in surfing history.

We still haven’t seen this.

MTV NBC AST ASAP

by The Editors on May 30, 2008

653-Mediumthumb-Mtv MedIt’s like someone spilled the Scrabble tiles, but what is means is that MTV is going jump in and try to feast on the carrion of the NBC AST Dew Tour. Action sports TV never looks so, well packaged.

As part of the MTV Networks/NBC Universal alliance around the AST, MTV and MTV2 will provide lifestyle programming, targeted cross-promotion, multi- platform content and distribution, consumer products licensing and merchandising to the joint venture. NBC Sports will continue to produce extensive competition coverage of the AST tours and provide live network broadcasts and on-air promotion around AST competitions.

Ramp that celebrity shit up. We need some viewers. Though no one has said it better than Kilwag at Skate and Annoy. Follow the jump for the whole press release.

Ultimatewaveposter01 250Px
Kelly Slater will be featured in a new 3D IMAX film from The Stephen Low Corporation and Quiksilver. Titled, The Ultimate Wave” features a tried and true format for certain:

Ultimate Wave is directed by award-winning giant-screen filmmaker Stephen Low and features eight-time world champion Kelly Slater at the helm of a surf expedition, exploring the globe to find and ride the ultimate wave. An accomplished athlete, surf explorer and devout student of the natural world Slater’s fascination and engagement with the ocean will provide audiences with a remarkable portal into the world of the wave.

Frequency #6.3 Printed And Dropped

by The Editors on May 8, 2008

frqncy.jpg

Hey look, the new issue of Frequency: The Snowboarder’s Journal. And it’s got a pow turn on the cover and it’s summer. In fact, Jeff Galbraith says this is the first “on the snow cover” in the magazine’s history. How punk rock is that? Or maybe it’s no statement at all. Maybe it’s just a great photo of some amazing snowboarding. Something we’d all like about now.

With several feet of fresh these last few weeks, lifts running well into May, no crowds, full snowpack, and tons of daylight, frequency TSJ #6.3 drops just in time for those who ride beyond December. From Snowbird to A-Basin, to Whistler, to Tuckerman’s to Alpental: snowboarding continues in full force, and South America/New Zealand deep pow sessions are just around the corner. . . . #6.3 features an amazing piece with freestyle legend Jeff Brushie by one of Snowboarder’s former editors Joel Muzzey , as well as photos from Bud Fawcett, Trevor Graves and others.

Pick it up where you can, or better yet buy a subscription and get an issue every time they come out.

Congratulations, Annie. Let’s hope you can keep that smile on your face all the way through January. We’re betting on you.
