Now that Matt Drudge has lost an election seems he’s got nothing better to post than surf the web: literally. That’s okay with us. Kerby Brown should be getting more play for this hideous monster West Oz wave that he rode last August, even if it is on a site like Drudge.
When we occasionally talk about the “old media” not getting it, this is what we’re talking about.
On Wednesday we got a press release from ASA Entertainment letting us know that CBSwould be airing four shows from the LG Action Sports Tour starting tomorrow November 8, 2008, followed by three more each weekend in December.
Most of the events being covered in these shows are at least three months old and the event last weekend in Seattle, Washington, The LG Actions Sports World Championships probably won’t air until December 20, 2008.
To put it clearly: everyone who cares about these events (we’re not sure who those people are exactly) will already have checked out the results, photos, and video online. That makes these four shows really old news to the people who care and completely untimely and irrelevant to those who happen to accidentally stumble on to the broadcasts while trying to find something to watch.
So what is the point of airing them at all? Well, this will be CBS’s fourth year airing the shows and we’re guessing some of ASA Entertainment’s sponsors still believe people are watching old action sports events on TV. And CBS probably thinks this will help them be down with the kids.
Apparently, a little self-delusion goes a long way in action sports marketing.
Volume two in Surfline.com’sWorld Wide Waves book series The Pipeline will be rolled out at BillabongHeadquarters in Irvine (click for map) on Saturday, November 8, 2008 with a special guest appearance by Gerry Lopez (and other Pipe Legends featured in the book).
Through 200 pages of captivating and timeless images from over 50 of the world’s best photographers, combined with words from surfing’s most renowned writers, “The Pipeline: The World’s Most Respected Wave” tells the stories from almost five decades of heart-stopping action: the first rides, the first contests, triumphs, deaths, localism, foreign invasion, performance revolution, with a special chapter by Surfline’s Sean Collins on how and why Pipeline is the wave that it is.
The only downside is that it’s a pretty spendy evening. It costs $35 just to get in, $100 includes a book, and $200 includes a limited edition of the book and some 2008 Pipeline Masters gear. Click the link to buy a ticket.
Okay, we admit it. Watching The Endless Summer with a live narration from Bruce Brown would be pretty rad. . . and $150 VIP event visitors also get a signed Endless Summer poster by the man himself. All this is going down at the California Surf Museum in Oceanside, CA this weekend. Click the link for more info.
Back in August we mentioned that Tony Hawk and Swinger’s director John Favreau would be on a The Sundance Channel show called Iconoclasttogether. Well, tonight at 10:00 PM EST, is the night.
If you have the channel watch it, it will be good.
We’d probably be more embarrassed that anything, but Quiksilver would like everyone to know that several of the stars of MTV’s The Hills enjoy wearing Quiksilver duds on the show.
Doug Reinhart, Brody Jenner and Frankie Delgado are fans of Quiksilver – Fact! . . . Check them rocking Quik on MTV’s hit show “The Hill’s”. Full episodes online here!! . . . Snag your own Quik gear online at Quiksilver.com or stop in a Quiksilver Store near you!
Ah, we’re kind of thinking this might be a great reason not to wear the stuff. Then again if we paid that much money getting our clothing on MTV we’d probably have to pimp it all to hell, too.
It’s not about chasing trophies or accolades or cash. It’s about quality over quantity and being true to your physical, mental, and spiritual roots. Not only is it possible to thrive in the modern world without adopting its harmful habits: it’s essential. And not only has Hamilton mastered this balance, he makes a compelling and articulate case that anyone who wants to can do the same.
If he can tell us how to get paid for everything (And, of Course, taking a dump) then we are so in. Click the link to by the book right now!
Tony Hawk has joined Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriguez, and Michael Phelps to dance around in their underwear in the latest Guitar Hero commercial according to a post on The Daily Voice.
The basketball, baseball, swimming and skateboarding stars appear on screen, a la Tom Cruise dancing to Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock And Roll” in the movie Risky Business. . . The ad, which was directed by filmmaker Brett Ratner, shows the athletes with dress shirts, underwear and socks in a living room and on two sofas.
Publication of Water Magazine, the print surf publication founded by Steve Zeldin and then sold to Surfline in July of 2007, has been officially suspended “in print for now,” according to sources at Surfline.com.
The good news is that apparently no one lost their jobs. It seems the staff was getting more milage out of the content they were putting online, without all the effort of printing a magazine. Guess it didn’t hurt that former editor Joel Patterson left for Surfer Magazine in late August.

Mark Sullivan, the founder of Snowboard Magazine has officially launched a new website for snowboarders called MTNOPS.com. Here’s what he says about it:
What Facebook does to link people with common friends, MTNOPS does to unite people of common interest. Users naturally connect based on where they are and what they want to do. What Google does for search, MTNOPS does for predictive search. It delivers the content users want without them asking for it. What Shopper.com does for people interested in buying technology, MTNOPS does for targeted goods and services. It brings the best deals in any product category directly to the consumer. . . .MTNOPS is a real community that is virtual, not a virtual community.
While this sounds like hyperbole, Sullivan and programmer JP Stoermer have created an interesting mix of social networking, blogging, content aggregation, and product recommendation centered around snowboarding. There are still a lot of glitches, many 404 dead-ends (it’s currently the third most popular page on the site), yet the base concept is solid and the interface perfectly minimal and forward.
It is obvious that a lot of thought went into MTNOPS and if Sullivan and crew can get ahead of the bugs it could become a necessary site for all snowboarders.
