ESPN: The Hard Goods Company

by The Editors on May 19, 2009

Prnphotos081786ESPN has done restaurants, shoes, skateboards, why not slap the X Games logo on some China bikes while they’re at it.

XG3 marks ESPN’s first foray into high performance action sports gear and will continue to build on the momentum that we have created in consumer products,” said Steve Cipolla, vice president and general manager, ESPN Consumer Products. “Innovation and authenticity are the hallmarks of every ESPN brand – as one of the first BMX superstars, Mat Hoffman perfectly embodies these attributes. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Mat, as we launch XG3 and continue to expand the X Games franchise World-Wide.”

We’re more excited by the possibility of some X Games snowboards by Todd Richards. [click to continue…]

Kelly Slater In Sports Illustrated

by The Editors on May 13, 2009

Slater Boost08

As we don’t read print magazines all that much it took a while before we were able to check out the recent Sports Illustrated story on Kelly Slater by writer Gary Smith. Here is a piece:

Well, then … why did he ride the ocean? What was his purpose? The more he stared at the question, the more jumbled the answers grew, his whys like old clothes crammed in a drawer. They’d seemed to fit once, but the longer he looked at them now, the more holes and wrinkles he saw, the more whys he didn’t even recognize. Where the hell to begin?

It’s one of those stories where the writer tries a little too hard and ends up getting in the way. But it’s worth reading because it’s long and it’s about Kelly.

Scott Bass’ interview of Gary Smith on Surfer.com is also worth reading, though he obviously seemed to enjoy Smith’s writing stylings a little more than we did.

Revenge of the Boarding School Dropouts

by The Editors on May 13, 2009

RevengeDon’t know how a Tom Green and Dave England feature film could slip by us, but this straight to DVD delight titled Revenge of the Boarding School Dropouts appears to have all the proper ingredients for shred film delights including a cornball story:

Max and Eddie have finally achieved their dream of managing a successful snowboarding team, but as the party atmosphere heats up, the temptation to run wild takes hold. Now that the team is a success, Max and Eddie are rolling in cash. But sometimes success makes us lose sight of the things that matter most, and forget how we soared to such heights in the first place. Realizing that they’re suddenly at risk of losing everything they’ve worked so to hard to create, these two reformed slackers fight to save their team and take back the mountain.

Ah, the story of rebellion and redemption on a snow-covered mountain. We can hardly wait.

Echo Beach Echo Echo

by The Editors on May 12, 2009

Picture-20-520X306It’s difficult for us to talk any smack about any of this because some of these guys (way back in the day) helped make us think surfing was cool. Lewis Samuels, not surprisingly, has a little different take on the new autobiographical documentary Echo Beach.

The Echo Beach crew taught the brands that they didn’t need to sponsor and support the best surfers on earth. Instead, they could simply sponsor and support the best groms in Newport. Or, more specifically, the “most influential” groms within a 100-yard stretch of Newport. . . So without the Echo Beach Crew, I suppose Alex Knost would not be a surf star. Case closed.

Sure, but the best part for us was to finally place The Skateboard Mag’s Preston Murray in proper context.

Surviving A Concussion

by The Editors on May 11, 2009

Concussion.JpgFor all the glee we feel at the demise of print publications there are times when we do actually back print. Concussion Magazine has always been a magazine pretty much beyond criticism. It was raw, honest, straight-forward, and had no problem running pictures of naked girls.

And now, according to a post on Skate and Annoy, it’s back.

Regular photo contributors Brendan Kline and Brooks Fritz have in effect taken over the publication of Concussion. Davoud and Jonathan are still there in an advisory capacity, or as “training wheels” as they say, for a couple issues.

Rocking good news. And with Brendan behind the wheel we know the magazine is only going to get better.

Spike Jonze’s Wild Things Blog

by The Editors on May 11, 2009

Wildthingblog

The story of how Spike Jonze brought Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are to the silver screen will probably fill a couple books someday, but for now there is the We Love You So blog that was launched last night. Here’s how the site is explained:

In October 2009 Spike Jonze’s feature film rendition of Maurice Sendak’s classic story Where The Wild Things Are will hit movie theaters worldwide. . . The film represents years of work from hundreds of different artists, writers, photographers, musicians, actors, and creators of all degrees. . . This place has been established to help shed some light on many of the small influences that have converged to make this massive project a reality. . . Keep reading…

We think we will.

MorSurf Launches One More Surf Magazine

by The Editors on May 11, 2009

MorsurfFrom our “there will never be a worse time to launch” files comes news that long-time surf industry soldier (and former Longboard Magazine sales lead) Mike Aguirre has launched a “new, fresh, now” surf magazine called morSURF.

“There are still lots of people who like to read stories and in-depth articles and who enjoy the quality of photography in print,” said Aguirre. “But for those surfers who want their information digitally, keeping the magazine viewable online is good PR and is also great for our advertisers because their links are active. We believe morSURF’s online presence will ultimately lead to increased sales and subscriptions of the printed publication.”

Spoken like a true print salesman. For those who love longboards, fish, hybrids, standup paddling and still read print magazines, morSURF could be the perfect media fix.
