Norb Garrett Surfs Back To ASG

by The Editors on April 2, 2010

AsglogoDon’t ever say there’s no going back in the action sports media business. Norb Garrett, the guy who’s most recently been running the San Clemente Times is back at Source Interlink’s Action Sport Group after a six year break. From 2001-2004 Norb was group publisher and editorial director.

“The SIM team and our outstanding brands will no doubt benefit from the caliber of experience Norb brings to the business and his passion for these titles and the verticals they cover,” said Argentieri. “We are very pleased to welcome him aboard and look to amplify the efforts and opportunities to grow this vibrant group of properties.” . . . “I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to lead this terrific portfolio of businesses and help them grow,” said Garrett, who most recently served as CEO/publisher of Picket Fence Media, a community media business and who also served as vice president, group publisher/editorial director of Primedia’s Action Sports Group from 2001-2004. “I have a real affinity for these titles and anticipate better leveraging Source Interlink’s superior distribution network while strengthening and building on our core print, online and event platforms.”

All we can say is Surfer, Surfing, Skateboarder, Snowboarder et. al. will be in good hands while they flounder around for a growing revenue stream now that the magazine era is dead and gone.

Tilt Mode Digital Army Zine #1

by The Editors on March 29, 2010

TiltmodeWe hate digital flip books more than the average “digital print” hater. Our normal mood is: if you want to make a magazine print it. Otherwise, throw up a WordPress install and fill it with good content.

San Jose’s Tiltmode Army doesn’t care what we think about digital media, but they do care about skateboarding. And with a blog already rolling we’re guessing they wanted to do something else. Enter Tilt Mode Zine #1. It’s got a Caswell Berry retrospective, an interview with Jerry Hsu’s girlfriend April and kicks off the cover with a quote from The Dead Kennedys’ Holiday in Cambodia.

It doesn’t smell like a Zerox machine, but this little gem is 70 pages of quality zine goodness, all accessed by clicking an arrow to watch the page turn. Really, what else does anyone need?

Dakides & Bright Appear In Chalet Girl

by The Editors on March 25, 2010

Pro shreds Tara Dakides and Torah Bright will appear in a new feature film based on the Kate Lace romance novel Chalet Girl, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Billed as a romantic comedy, the story details the story of a young girl from a working class suburb who lands a job in an ultra-glam ski resort, where she’s totally out of her depth until she discovers her natural snowboarding genius — and the boss’s gorgeous son.

The story is reportedly the retelling of Cinderella as a snowboarder (played by Felicity Jones). Roxy and Quiksilver are reportedly providing “branding” for the film which is being directed by All About Steve’s Phil Traill. Filming isMammoth Mountain going on this week in St. Anton.

Charlie Smith’s Side Of The Fanning Story

by The Editors on March 24, 2010

Stab RespondsWe’ve been wondering for a while how the whole Stab Magazine Tales of A Fucking Jew Mick Fanning story came about. Today the writer Charlie Smith was kind enough to recount his side on the Stab Magazine site.

The events of Saturday night, December 12, have taken on an apocryphal glow. I had been invited to Mick Fanning’s celebration at the Rip Curl house by Rip Curl’s international media manager Dane Sharp. I was introduced to surfing journalist Tim Baker. Tim and I talked for some time. He explained to me that he did not enjoy what I did. Said that it was too negative and the point of surfing is a positive communal experience. He also did not like that I had written that Mick Fanning was boring and asked if I had ever met Mick. I answered no. He told me that Mick is a great guy and I should meet him. Mick was standing near and alone. Tim went over and I followed. Mick was angry and called me a fucking Jew. I was dragged out of the house by security.

This is only the first paragraph. If you believe you have an opinion on the topic, please read the rest.

The Bra Boys Go Reality TV Route

by The Editors on March 24, 2010

Sunny Abberton has the Bra Boys family industry running in the reality TV direction if reports on News.com.au are to be trusted.

HAVING conquered the big screen with their super successful self-titled documentary, the Bra Boys are now on the cusp of consolidating an offer for a reality-TV series. . . Word on the beach is the show will be a “fly-on-the-wall” look at the lives of the notorious Maroubra siblings, and may even see pin-up of the surfing gang Koby Abberton return to school.

Sunny and Koby are apparently looking for a way to show their “more humorous side.” This should be good.

Stab Yanks Magazine Off Newsstands

by The Editors on March 22, 2010

Smith FanningStories of Stab Magazine and racism are fast becoming cliché. In the most recent episode Mick Fanning’s lawyers asked Stab to pull their January/February issue off newsstands due to a few culturally problematic quotes from the current world champ.

The issue features a Charlie Smith story titled Tales of a Fucking Jew in which Fanning is reportedly quoted making similarly anti-semitic comments directed at Smith (pictured left) in December 2009 at a Rip Curl party celebrating Mick’s 2010 ASP world title win.

According to a story in The Australian Stab publisher Sam McIntosh has complied with the request and the issue is no longer available.

He said Stab had acceded to a request from Fanning’s lawyers to pull the issue from newsstands, but not for legal reasons. . . He said the decision was motivated by a desire to maintain good relations with the surfer and only after Fanning had expressed contrition. . . He denied the assertion that as Fanning’s sponsor, Rip Curl, was also an advertiser with the magazine, this had influenced the withdrawal of the issue.

Times are tough enough for print magazines without pulling newsstand issues and being forced into refunding all those advertising dollars. Sounds like some bad decisions all around.

Jake Burton: Huffington Post Free Writer

by The Editors on March 19, 2010

Jake HuffingtonArianna Huffington likes to talk about how she gets so many amazing people to write for her for free. And apparently, it works. The latest addition to her unpaid writers’ stable: Jake Burton. His topic for the Huffington Post is the Burton US Open. Not surprisingly, he loves it.

. . . once the Olympics are done, it feels good to come home and know that the next time I see the best snowboarders in the world compete will be in Vermont, where snowboarding has a rich heritage, at the US Open, going down from March 19-21 at Stratton Mountain Resort. Compared to the Olympics, where everything is under the control of a ski federation, the Open has been run by snowboarders, for snowboarders since 1982. It is snowboarding’s oldest active competition, and year after year, it’s the home of the sport’s most progressive riding. This week at Stratton, five out of the six 2010 Olympic halfpipe medalists, including Shaun White, Peetu Piiroinen, Scotty Lago, Hannah Teter, and Kelly Clark are slated to compete.

It’s good to know that Jake still likes his event. He is not alone.

Jon Foster’s Local Paper Interview

by The Editors on March 17, 2010

10QjonfosterWe’ve been wondering what Snowboard Journal co-founder Jon Foster has been up to lately. And thanks to the La Jolla Light newspaper we’re learning a little more about the photographer who made so many snowboarders famous. The Light asked Jon who he’d like to have over for a dinner party. This is what he said:

Jim Morrison; Hunter S. Thompson; Helmut Newton; Natalie Portman; the Dalai Lama; Mark Procopio; my sister Kathleen, who died in 1984; and Olivia Wilde.

Having dined with one of the people on his list we can’t say we disagree. For the rest of the interview follow the link.
