Okay, so a kid uploads a video of some skating to a NERD song and wins this Active Ride Shop Contest. They get a autographed copy of NERD Seeing Sounds. That’s pretty hype. . . but what the hell are they going to do with an engraved Microsoft Zune? Aside from spending the rest of the summer explaining to everyone that “it’s kind of alike an iPod only it totally sucks.”

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 14 years since Kevin Lyman mentioned to Fran Richards that he would like to name his rock tour something similar to one of the magazines Fran was selling ads in (Warp). The magazine is long, long forgotten, but the tour continues to rock the nation of kids that are about as old as it is.
Label Networks‘ Kathleen Gasperini checked in with Kevin as the tour kicked off on June 20, 2008 in Pamona, California with a sold-out show of 20,000 and Angels and Airwaves, Say Anything, Cobra Starship, Shwayze, The Maine, and Family Force 5 (plus more) on the bill.
Many people account for the tour’s success to the founder and director, Kevin Lyman, who has an uncanny ability to select a mix of up-and-coming bands, along with older bands re-instating their careers, which continue to draw a youthful audience. In a live interview on site at Pomona, Kevin explained to Label Networks TV that there are several new things to expect from the new crop of up-and-coming bands and tour this summer. “It’s the first day so there are things to work out, but it’s great to see 2,000 kids run over to see Oreska band play, then Beat Union. I think the Aggrolites are going to be interesting to watch this summer, among many others. Once we hit Phoenix, I should have more time to be out in the crowd and check out more bands.”
Check it out, because reading Kathleen’s story is much more comfortable than standing all day under the hot sun in a parking lot full of sweaty teen consumers. Trust us. We know.

Chris Broderick, guitarist for the speed metal band Megadeth just updated his blog at Blabbermouth.net. He wanted everyone to know that he’s at Mammoth Mountain snowboarding . . . in a helmet. And we thought he was a head-banger.
It’s been a while since I have posted here so I figured I would try to catch up. Right now I am up in Mammoth Mountain, CA snowboarding. I invited Dave [Mustaine, MEGADETH mainman] and Justis [Dave’s son] to come up but I think they are more into warm weather sports, however, they do have a run named after Dave here.

Guess standing out in the water holding a paddle can get pretty boring. Maybe that’s why Laird Hamilton has decided he needs a little tunage while he’s out janitoring.
H2O Audio, the leading watersports music company, announced today that Laird Hamilton has officially been appointed to its Board of Directors. As a member of the Board, Hamilton will be strategically guiding the company with marketing its brand and developing its next generation of surf/music products.
Luckily, their product is already solid.

The New York Daily News‘ Jim Farber says Jack Johnson’s new, darker album Sleep Through The Static has “a certain blandness to it all.” In fact, he titled his review “Jack Johnson’s surf sound wipes out in serious undertow.”
By his measure, this may mark an uptick in seriousness. But even the breeziest surfer’s soul deserves more.
Clever, huh?

Seems like the media always takes the same tack with Jack. How could a laid back surfer become a musical powerhouse. Though the obvious answer is: because he creates beautiful music. That’s never enough for a full features in a newspaper. Here, the Times UK’s Robin Eggar interviews Jack Johnson and attempts to make sense of it all.
The first time Jack Johnson made voluntary eye contact with me was the fourth time we met. A couple of glasses of red wine over dinner loosened his tongue from the reserved to the discreet. It’s not that he’s rude – he is painstakingly polite – it’s just that he may be the shyest superstar alive.

Yeah, this is the guy we all want to hang out with right? Lil Jon. Okay, we don’t, but we are obviously in the minority (once again). Greg Lutzka, Ryan Shecler, Danny Kass, The Dingo, and Travis Mellem are all down with BME Click, according to Hip Hop Elements. We’ll let Mr. Kass explain it:
“When Lil Jon wanted to get into action sports he wanted to pull the illest crew together, and it is an honor to be picked by that man.” Sheckler also adds, “Action sports is taking over, and BME is a part of it. Keep your eyes open and get ready!”
The illest indeed.

He has a new album coming out on February 5, 2008 so that means Jack Johnson is on the media tour, including an interview with Newsweek where he said the following regarding his EniroRider:
The rider covers not just what’s in your dressing room, which is what most people know about the rider. It has more to do with stage specifications. It could cover anything from low-energy lighting to requesting biodiesel in any generators that have to be used. I think this time around we’re going to try to see what can be requirements for the venues. There are certain venues that contacted us after the last tour and said they’d made a lot of changes. It’s nice to hear that the tour does have an effect on people and trying to better their venues.
Green it up, little darling, green it up. . .
