A showing of the art of Dustin Ortiz, Jonathan Mattson, and Jared Mattson titled Top Ramen Nachos will open this Friday, September 30, 2011, at UNIV in Encinitas, California.
Born and raised in Encinitas, surrounded by the creative melting pot of the surf and skateboard communities, Dustin and the Mattson’s have been using the tools at their disposal to create for the better part of their lives. They have chosen the name, “Top Ramen Nachos” for their first show together as a symbol of the unique and satisfying combinations that can manifest when one is left their own devices in a world where the circumstances are not ideal.
Tack up 28-year-old skater Chris René as another in the long list of ridiculously talented Santa Cruz surf/skate ghetto addiction survivors. Only 70 days out of rehab René blew away the judges on Fox’s new reality singing show The X Factor with his own song Young Homie. Talking about doing Santa Cruz proud. . .
While we can’t really say we’ve been wondering what snowboardcross racer Lindsey Jacobellis has been up to this summer, Yobeat.com definitely let us in on a little of her singing summer. Apparently, this is a parody of song from the Disney movie Tangled. Wow.
It’s good to see pro skateboarders doing well as they get older, have kids, and roll forward. Ray Barbee seems to have things pretty much in tune if this Strange Notes @Home clip is any indication.
Confession: we’ve skipped out on every single opportunity we’ve had to attend the Vans Warped Tour. Apparently, in contrast to Blink-182, we actually could “wait for the summer and the warped tour.” Seventeen years, as it turns out (sorry Steve Van Doren).
Yesterday, however, thanks to the All Girl Skate Jam (pictured above), we found ourselves in Carson, California for the fifth to last stop of the 2011 Vans Warped Tour. And, we’re happy to report, the kids are alright.
The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing just released the line up for the music portion of the enormous summer bash in Huntington Beach August 4-6, 2011 and it looks damn good.
This year’s musical line-up is a representation of today’s youth culture featuring headlining sets by psych-pop rockers MGMT, platinum-selling rockers Jimmy Eat World and Swedish electro/rock sensations The Sounds. The series will also include sets by the most buzzed about names emerging on the music scene this year: Surfer Blood and Dead Country.
Sure, Jimmy Eat World and MGMT are great and all, but we’re looking most forward to seeing Surfer Blood on Saturday, August 6, 2011. Follow the jump for more details. [click to continue…]

Tomorrow (June 18, 2011) at La Gaîté lyrique in Paris, France a huge skateboarding culture show titled Public Domaine will be opening.
Public Domaine, with an “e”, is the homage paid to an art form which has chosen a plank and four wheels as its medium of self-expression with which to reclaim the public domain and to reinterpret it with its twists and whorls on the asphalt. Because “skateboarding” is much more than just a sport, an activity, a hobby or a means of transport… Over the years, it has forged itself a rich, evolving aesthetic and transformed itself in the course of its encounters with artists – from designers to musicians – who have taken it as their traveling companion.
The show features art by Neck Face, Yogi Proctor, Adam Wallacavage, Donny Miller, Deanna Templeton, Cleon Peterson, Michael Burnett, Mike O’Meally; music by Dinosaur Jr, Tommy Guerrero, Mix Master Mike, Ray Barbee, McRad, Lords of The Underground, Boys Noize, Antipop Consortium, Busy P, Bad Shit, and The Goat, plus skate demos from a slew of teams. The show runs from June 18 – August 7, 2011. Click the link for more info.
While being trapped on a rocky outcropping listening to Eddie Vedder solo on a ukelele may be as close to hell as we could get on this earth, you may feel differently about the earnest, sincere, serious, surfing musician.
If you, like NPR’s Ann Powers, believe that Vedder’s new album Ukulele Songs is “a statement of truth.” And that by choosing the “ukulele’s intimacy, Vedder sounds like someone getting out of his own way and discovering what really matters within his art,” then holy shit, have we got a contest for you.
French high fashion mall clothierVolcom is giving away tickets to Eddie Vedder’s sold out Ukulele Songs tour. Simply enter all your critical personal data on this page (volcom.com/eddy) and in return Volcom may give you a ticket to see Eddie Vedder live. Get crackin’ the tour beings June 21, 2011 in New York City.
