According to a story on Eonline.com, the Beastie Boys have filed a lawsuit against Monster Energy Drink “claiming the [company] tried to create “an association” with the Beastie Boys by using several of their hit tunes in a promotional campaign without properly licensing them.”
First up, the plaintiffs don’t want to see Monster Energy’s promotional video for its 2012 Ruckus in the Rockies event, which the suit claims was posted to the drink’s website in May, in its current incarnation ever again. . . According to the complaint, the video is “comprised substantially of excerpts from the Beastie Boys Sound Recordings and the Beastie Boys Musical Compositions totaling more than three minutes in duration.”
Looks like the group is sticking to the letter of Adam Yauch’s will in which he stated that “in no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes.”
The story of Sal Masekela’s relationship with his musician father Hugh could be hitting the big screen in a feature film from Olympic Pictures and Paul Haggis, according to a story on Deadline.com.
South African filmmaker Mukunda Michael Dewil has been hired to write and direct the film. The project follows a son emerging out of the shadow of his successful but troubled father set against a backdrop of music, surfing, and South Africa’s racism. The untitled Masekela project will be produced by Leslie Urdang and Dean Vanech of Olympus Pictures, Haggis and Michael Nozik of Hwy 61 Films, and Selema Masekela.
We’re looking forward to this one if only to see the Hollywood version of Sal’s autobiography.
Songstress (and former Transworld Media intern) Tristan Prettyman has come a long way since IMing MP3’s of her home-recorded tracks around to friends and family. Now, the Wall Street Journal takes us all on a tour of the place where she wrote most of the songs from her upcoming album Cedar and Gold (which drops September 25, 2012).
After . . . Tristan Prettyman’s engagement to pop star Jason Mraz ended in 2010, she retreated to the cedar bungalow where she’d lived as a child. Her father, a former carpenter, had renovated the house months earlier, hoping it would be a place for the couple to live in after they married.
Sounds like Tristan has all she needs: a great place to live and the continually broken heart that inspires her best work.
Will Smith’s latest money making scheme (his son Jaden) puts down a small bit of skateboarding skills in his newest video Pumped up Kicks (Like Me). filmed entirely at The Skatelabin Simi Valley, California. And yes, that was Chris Cole and Theotis Beasley all over the place. Nothing like keeping the family business rolling.
Thanks to some nice work by 2012 US Open of Surfing security and the kind, loving people of Southern California, this little scuffle at the TV On The Radio show on August 3, 2012 didn’t get out of hand, exactly.
Yes, believe it. Two of the biggest stars of the Insta-Twitterverse were in the same room at the same time for an interview and you’ll be surprised by who comes out on top. It’s Tony Hawk vs. Justin Bieber.
Director, designer, and photographer Charles Bergquist will be featuring some of his recent work during a show titled Maybe It’s A Trap at the UNIV Concept Shop in Encinitas, California on Friday, July 27, 2012.
Bergquist [has] a unique style that combines vivid colors with elegant imagery. He continues to push his boundaries by constantly creating new work.
We’ll admit it. Our only interest in watching this Frendly Gathering 2012 official video was the hope that it would feature long-haired, smooth-skinned Vermont hippie girls spinning around in the forest. While the video does, in fact, feature a few glimpses of hippie girls doing yoga, getting their faces painted, riding quads, and hoola hooping, it was a solid reminder that we didn’t miss a thing by not taking a early June trip to Vermont. Which is not to say the people who went didn’t look stoked out of their heads. They all seemed very happy with all the work the Frends crew and bands put into the weekend.
If you’re into hanging out in the woods, skateboarding, do yoga, and listening to bands like Deer Tick, Waylon Speed, Railroad Earth, The Felice Brothers and/or DJ Z Trip then the Frendly Gathering At Timber Ridge Mountain, in Windham Vermont June 14 – 16, 2012 must be about as close to hippie heaven as you can get.
Setting the balance with world‐renowned music headliners and aspiring up‐ and‐comers, The Frendly Gathering strives to create a world of live music that all friends can enjoy together. Set in the picturesque Vermont countryside, the music of 30+ artists provide the live soundtrack to an intimate three‐day festival with four stages, camping, skateboarding, hiking, swimming, live art, and a host of other activities.
The Frend’s crew has turned what was once a weekend camp-out into a real deal musical/cultural event. Click here to buy tickets or follow the jump for a complete three-day lineup and all the details, follow the jump. [click to continue…]
