Surfing
After a ride of nearly 15 years, Transworld Surf magazine appears to have come to a closeout. The staff is now reportedly working on the final issue of the magazine. At a meeting this morning (June 25, 2013) in Transworld’s Carlsbad, California offices, it was reportedly announced to the staff that the print magazine would be shutting down, however, the website would continue under the leadership of Justin Cote and Zander Morton.
This news come just one month after it was announced that GrindMedia/Source Interlink had purchased Transworld Media from the Bonnier Corporation. When that transaction was announced GrindMedia Senior Vice President and Group Publisher Norb Garrett said on May 20, 2013 suggested that there were no plans to cut any Transworld brands or employees. How quickly things change.
In an interview posted on the GrindMedia owned Transworld Business Garrett explained the decision:
The first question everybody in the industry asked us was “can you do three surf mags?” That was a question we needed to answer first before we did anything else. While we could have on day one just closed TW Surf, which would have made a lot of sense to a lot of people, I really felt that we owed the brand and the market an opportunity for us to understand more about how the brand fit into the space. That was information we couldn’t get until after we had the brand and could have the conversations with advertisers, people in the industry, and even people outside the industry. Over the last month we spent a lot of time asking that question and the answer we came up with was no.
Garrett said that a few of the staff will be offered other opportunities in the company, and a few employees will be cut. No other title cutbacks were announced in the meetings held June 25, 2013 according to the story, but it seems likely in this changing media environment that more evolution will take place in the coming months. Ryan Burch will be showing a collection of his surfboard shapes tomorrow (Friday, June 21, 2013) in The Garage at UNIV in Encinitas, California. The show, titled Functional? Water Deflecting Sculpture Not For Sale, will highlight the innovative shapes that Burch will spend the next year surfing.
Ryan is a local Encinitas surfer and shaper and utilizes his vast knowledge of surfboard design history to craft futuristic asymmetrical surfboards from beyond. He has gained widespread attention as both a test pilot and conceptual craftsman and stands at the forefront of the do-it-yourself movement and innovation.

Patagonia is bringing attention to the life story of legendary surfer Wayne Lynch in Craig Griffin’s film Uncharted Waters: The Personal History of Wayne Lynch.
It traces his upbringing in the seaside town of Lorne on Victoria’s south western coast and his turbulent experiences as a ‘conscientious objector’ on the run from conscription and the Vietnam War. Ultimately, it is about an extremely gifted individual with an intense connection to the Southern Ocean, whose approach to surfing has been a spiritual journey often putting him at odds with the surfing subculture and society in general.
The film plays June 20, 2013 at Broad Theater in Santa Monica, California, June 21, 2013 at the world famous La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas, California and June 27, 2013 at Village East Cinema, in New York City.

We didn’t really realize it before today, but we’ve always loves photos of girls duck diving. When a true waterman has to go it’s not bad to be on the water as Body Glove co-founder Bob Meistrell was on Sunday, June 16, 2013. Meistrell was on his yacht The Disappearance on Sunday morning when he had a heart attack, according to a story in the Daily Breeze. He was 84 years old.
The Disappearance was the lead boat in the 22-mile Rock 2 Rock race Sunday from Isthmus on Catalina to Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro. As he’s done in previous years, Meistrell led the paddleboarders out of the harbor about 6:30 a.m., his son said. . . But around 7, Robbie Meistrell said he’d received a call that his father’s boat, which was also carrying his mother, Patty, and a second cousin, had a double-engine failure. He was nearby and preparing to help tow the vessel in when he heard soon after that his father had suffered a heart attack in the boat’s engine room, he said.
Meistrell, who founded Body Glove with his twin brother Bill, will be remembered as a legendary diver, surfer, and waterman. Our thoughts are with the entire Meistrell family.

St. Augustin Beach, Florida surfer Andrew Birchall, 37, is recovering from two shark bites to his foot after jumping off his board and stepping on a shark, according to a story in Action News Jax.
“When he got off the board, he apparently stepped on the shark in about waist deep water. The shark bit him we think twice. We think he bit him once, then kind of pulled his foot out of the shark’s mouth, then he got another bite on his toes,” mother Nancy Birchall said. . . She said her son has been surfing the St. Augustine Beach area for years, and never had a problem.
After a trip to the hospital and surgery to remove a shark tooth from his foot, Birchall is doing well. Seems it’s hard to step off your board in Florida without stepping on a shark.
