University of California at Santa Barbara History professors Peter Neushul and Peter Westwick have taken some course work from their college class on the history of surfing and turned it into an extremely readable book titled The World In The Curl: An unconventional History of Surfing, according to a story on GrindTV.com.
The World in the Curl: An Unconventional History of Surfing focuses on surfing’s progression from a Polynesian past-time to a billion-dollar global industry. Along the way, it shows how the sport was heavily shaped by the U.S. military, aerospace, and technological advances taking place during the same time period—and how without those influences, surfing as we know it would be dead in the water.

The Billabong Pro Tahiti is on at Teahupo’o and the boys got down to business and through four heats of Round 2 before shutting down for the day. Kelly Slater worked his usual magic and slipped directly into Round 3 by patiently waiting until the final 15 seconds of his Round 1 Heat 5 matchup against fellow American’s Ian Walsh and Brett Simpson.
“I was kind of lucky that one even came in the end,” Slater said. “I blew the best wave of the heat and lost my fins. I had the line I wanted and just lost my fins on the foam-ball and was too far behind to catch up. Brett (Simpson) had a few opportunities and paddled too wide. My waves weren’t that great and I was just trying to make things happen.”

The T.F.R. Gallery in Encinitas, California is proud to present a solo-exhibition of framed prints from graphic artist John Van Hamersveld opening Friday, August 16, 2013. Van Hamersveld is most famous in the surf world for his iconic The Endless Summer movie poster.
John Van Hamersveld has been producing images that have defined the visual representation of surf and rock ‘n’ roll culture for over 50 years. Starting off his career with the immensely successful movie poster for The Endless Summer in 1966, Van Hamersveld’s influence on the world of graphic images was immediately profound. From there he moved on to produce over 300 album covers, including designs for the Beatles’ American pressing of the Magical Mystery Tour, the Rolling Stones’ Exile On Main St., Jefferson Airplane’s Crown of Creation, Grateful Dead’s Skeletons in the Closet, Blondie’s Eat to the Beat, KISS’ Hotter Than Hell, the Beach Boys’ Wild Honey, and The Doors’ An American Prayer.

The Billabong Pro Tahiti waiting period begins tomorrow (Thursday, August 15. 2013) and it appears that 2011’s monster wave fest will not be repeated at stop number six of the 2013 ASP World Championship Tour.
Surfline, official forecasters for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, are calling for: A modest, mid period SW swell will build in Thursday before easing slowly on Friday. A smaller SW swell is possible for Sunday, with a series of small to modest SW to S swells possible for the last few days of the waiting period.

We’ve been following the action tracking space for a while, and it seems that very few of the products ever make it past the Kickstarter phase. The makers of Alpine Replay (a ski and snowboarding action tracker) are launching a new tracker called Trace that (like competitor Lit) will get all your skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding down for the world to see. Timothy Hogan is a still life photographer who also surfs and while attempting to come up with a project that would merge the both pieces of his life he decided to focus on surfboard fins.
“I wanted to find merge to bring two passions together and to contribute something to the sport because it is an overlooked part of surfing that has never gotten to seen the light of day, “Hogan says. “The fin inventors who have really allowed surfing to progress have never been given the recognition that they deserve. The fin is probably the most important evolutionary point in surfing.”
The project includes a website, fine art prints (on sale now here), and eventually a book. And yeah, the photos look really good.
