Unless you’re staying up all night, it’s difficult to catch much of the European leg of the ASP World Tour. But thankfully, the events are on full replay. And we just hooked up our Chromecast so we should be all good of for the remainder of the 2013 Rip Curl Pro Portugal. What did we miss during today’s Round 1 action? Well we missed Matty Wilkinson (pictured above) sending Quik Pro Champ Mick Fanning right into round two. We also missed Jacob Willcox getting past Kelly Slater and Kolohe Andino in their H1R5 heat. Wilko was pretty happy with his R1 win.
“I knew where I wanted to sit and I was just hoping that the conditions wouldn’t change too much,” Wilkinson said. “I got a few okay ones at the start and it was kind of scary I saw Mick (Fanning) get a wave before my last one and I thought it might be the score so I didn’t know if I was chasing a score or not. That last one, I knew I was deep, I took off and was just pumping as hard as I could cause I really wanted to make it, I was stoked.”

It came down to the wire, but on October 5, 2013, at the end of the final day of the final event of the 2013 Women’s ASP Tour at the EDP Cascais Girls Pro presented by Billabong that Hawaii’s Carissa Moore clinched her second ASP World Title just ahead of Australian Tyler Wright.
In one of the closest battles for the world surfing crown that the ASP has ever witnessed, the Hawaiian and Australian went blow-for-blow in 2013, collecting five victories of the first seven events between them. . . “This title is much sweeter as it was so close with Tyler (Wright),” Moore said. “She’s so young, but so strong and fearless when it comes to competition. She can always come back and really pushed me to work my hardest this year. I won some different events this season and it all amounted to a really meaningful year for me.”

In celebration of their 10 Year Anniversary, the action-fashion-art magazine Monster Children has released a limited edition, hardbound collection of some of their best work titled (cleverly enough) Ten Years of Monster Children Magazine.
The book contains not only the best of Monster Children’s stories, departments, photography and art, it also includes exclusive interviews with the contributors and featured folks who helped Monster Children reach the decennial (that’s a fancy word for ten year anniversary). Sal Masekela’s biopic Alekesam follows the story of his jazz musician father Hugh Masekela and the relationship that has developed between the once distant father and son. It is the story of South Africa, and freedom, and music, and action sports, and it’s being featured tonight (Friday, October 4, 2013) at the San Diego Film Festival.
Alekesam plays at 6:30 PM at the Reading Theater in the Gaslamp District. The theater is located at 701 5th Ave, in San Diego.

Mick Fanning stuck to his speed surfing guns to survive a non-stop aerial assault from Brazilian Gabriel Medina to win his fourth Quiksilver Pro France on Friday, October 4, 2013. Fanning grabbed the first wave and continue to lay down the solid contest surfing while Medina tried all his tricks. Sadly, for the Medina, he had trouble landing his backflip and several other airs that could have made the difference.
Fanning was beside himself. “I’m pretty emotional. Oh my god. I’ve drawn an ace,” Fanning said on the beach. “I never got into rythymn until this morning. for the guys I had to go through in the contest, this is amazing. And Gabi is such an incredible kid. Even with 20 seconds to go I was still wearing brown underwear.”
