Surfing
Sally Fitzgibbons charged her way to the top in the Fiji Women’s Pro against five-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore at Cloudbreak.
“I guess wins come in waves for me! To win in beachbreaks in Rio last week and then in reefbreaks in Fiji this week is a huge boost to my confidence,” said Sally Fitzgibbons. “I knew that I’ve been surfing well this year and I just needed things to fall my way before the wins started coming. Carissa (Moore) had a huge start to this season, but the year’s a long way from being finished. I’m looking forward to the US Open.”

It appears that North Shore surfers will have a new neighbor at Rocky Point soon as the Honolulu Star is reporting that GoPro founder Nick Woodman just spent close to $9 million of the company’s pre-going-public dollars for a 66-year-old house and a 31,000 square foot vacant lot on Ke Nui Road, according to a story on BizJournals.
The newspaper reports the buyer’s agent, Lora “Bitsy” Healey, whose son is big-wave surfer Mark Healey, declined to reveal her client’s identity.
This purchase is reportedly the most someone has paid for a vacant lot on the North Shore. That’s not a bad way to flow some money into the local community.

During a break in the 2014 Drug Aware Margaret River Pro Smith Optic surfers CJ Hobgood and Yadin Nicol took some time to make some good days great. And it worked pretty well, apparently.

It’s been pretty rough all week for the ASP women at stop number five on the Samsung Galaxy ASP World World Championship Tour. The surf at Tavarua has been blown, choppy, bumpy, and throwing at Cloudbreak. Yesterday, the women surfed Round 3 and two hearts of Round 4 at Restaurants. It was the first time in ASP history that women have surfed this shallow, sharp, reef pass, and surprise, Laura Enever ended up with the days highest score, even thought Stephanie Gilmore and Dimity Stoyle gave her a run.
“I think it’s so new for us to be surfing here in Fiji. That was my first surf at Restaurants and I thought, I just need to catch a wave and see what happens on it,” said Laura Enever. “I can’t believe that just happened but I’m so stoked. I think everyone is having the best time here. It’s windy out there but it’s fine and I’m so stoked that I got two fun ones.”

The Santa Cruz Surf Film Festival is looking for a few good films to help them kick off their inaugural event on September 24 – 26, 2014. They are inviting independent filmmakers from all over the world to submit their work to the inaugural annual event.
Taking place September 24th to the 26th, 2014, the Santa Cruz Surf Film Festival aims to increase independent surf filmmakers’ exposure to one of the world’s largest audiences of surfers and industry professionals, as well as foster the exchange of stories, ideas and perspectives among the surf community. . . This year’s jury panel will include 3-time Mavericks competition winner Darryl “Flea” Virostko; professional big wave surfer Tyler Fox; skateboarding legend and action sports industry veteran Judi Oyama; surfboard shaper Michel Junod; and surfer/shaper/musician Ashley Lloyd Thompson. Titles of Best Feature, Best Short, Best Cinematography, and Best Soundtrack will be awarded by the jury panel. There will also be a Viewers’ Choice title awarded.

Sage Erickson made the 2014 Maxim Hot 100 list of women who men would apparently most like to mate with. She snuck in at number 87 right behind some sitcom star named Victoria Justice. Maxim came up a little short on Sage’s bio, however. Here it is in its entirety:
Top-ranked pro surfer Sage Erickson is far from you’re ordinary, everyday beach bunnie.
Yes, she is. Sage looks great as usual, but we were stumped by one thing: is she wearing nude panty hose or did the Maxim artists just go overboard Photoshopping her right leg? We’re guessing the later. Other than that, dive in. Lana Del Rey is number 82.

And the 2014 Oakley Surf Shop challenge Hawai’i addition goes to T&C Surf.
The T&C Surf squad – comprised of Kekoa Bacalso, Dustin Cuizon, Travis Hashimoto and Kalei Umoto – will be heading to the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge National Championships later this year at a secret Central American spot. They got to the victor’s podium with power surfing with Kekoa “Bam” Bacalso leading the charge. . . “Man, the waves were firing all day,” said Bam. “It was an incoming swell, the tide changed and there was a couple of mental ones!”

Christian Hosoi has taken his iconic Hammerhead skateboard design and transformed it into a surfboard with a little help from the heads at the UNIV Work Shop, in Encinitas, California. Here’s how they tell it:
The collaboration was born in 2013 and then Christian came down to our UNIV Work Shop in Encinitas, California and the first Hammerhead surfboard was shaped. The original is 5’5” by 22” and is true to scale to the skateboard dimensions. With a hulled-out nose, deep single to double concave, sharp rail and four-fin setup, the Hammerhead is designed for high performance surfing and flow.

Adam Contoret, a standup paddler who is apparently tired of paddling, has equipped himself with a couple handheld jet engines and used them to propel himself across Chasewater Lake in Staffordshire, England. In this edit Doug Foden give the jets a little run. Wonder what happens when he falls into the water with those jet engines? Are they ruined for life? Could get kind of expensive.
