Ever since Jeff Clark was removed from his position as contest director of the Mavericks Surf Contest (an event he founded) we figured it would all end up in court eventually. Now, according to a press release sent out yesterday, it has.
The lawsuit comes one week after an already re-scheduled mediation was canceled by MSV attorney Paul Marotta and CEO Keir Beidling, claiming the Mavericks Surf Contest would be held that week. It was not. . . “I’ve waited patiently and remained quiet in an effort to settle our issues in private, without casting a shadow over the contest that I founded. But it’s obvious MSV has no intention of working this out. They have forced me to file suit in order to move on with my life,” Clark said.
Clark’s complaint, filed in Superior Court in San Francisco, and states that Mavericks Surf Ventures “breached its contracts with Clark, withheld payments on those contracts, and breached its fiduciary duties to shareholders by the Board’s self-dealing, squandering of corporate assets and failure to disclose even basic financial and other corporate information. The suit claims that, in breaching their fiduciary duties, MSV and its current directors acted with oppression, fraud and malice.”

Bridge to Terabithia star Anna Sophia Robb is staring as Bethany Hamilton in a bio-pic titled Soul Surfer which tells the story of a surfer girl who gets her arm bitten off by a shark while surfing, according to celebrifi. Another blog, The Boot adds the following info:
One of the actors in the film, Kevin Sorbo shared information about Carrie being cast in the film via Twitter: “Name of movie is ‘soul surfer.’ touching story. i will be starring with dennis quaid, helen hunt, carrie underwood, anna sophia robb,” he writes.
Shooting starts January 25, 2010 on Oahu.

We got lost when the contest was called off after two heats in the semi-finals. Then the finals snuck right by us. Apparently Maxime Huscenot, the 17-year-old charger from Reunion Island, and Australian Laura Enever, 18, claimed their ASP World Junior Titles while we weren’t watching. The two reportedly dominated “the punchy two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves on offer at North Narrabeen for the final day of the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships.”
“This is the biggest day of my life and it’s absolutely unbelievable,” Huscenot said. “It feels like I just won a heat, not the ASP World Title – it’s incredible. Jadson (Andre) is an amazing surfer and the whole Brazilian team rips so hard. I cannot believe it is my day. I am at a loss for words.”
Laura Enever just wanted to do well at home.
“I just wanted to go out and have fun and that’s what I did,” Enever said. “This is my home and I’m so stoked to be here with all my friends and family giving me so much support. This is the best day of my life. It’s been my dream forever to win here at home and now that I’ve done it, I’m at a loss for words.”

Jadson Andre (BRA), 19, boosts on his way to the quarters.
Sadly, we missed out on the earlier rounds of The Billabong World Junior Championships from North Narrabeen, Australia, but last night as Nat Young and Granger Larson made it into the quarter finals and Owen Wright got knocked out by Maxime Huscenot, it kind of got our attention.
If conditions improve, today just might just be the day for the finals, or as announcer Nick Carroll calls it Super Saturday. The call will be made at 7 AM local time (Noon PT Friday)
Here’s who will be surfing if the contest runs:

On Thursday January 21, 2010 surf photographer Art Brewer will be presenting a lecture Surf’s Up: 40 Years from the Surf and Sand at Los Angeles, California’s Annenberg Space For Photography. Unfortunately, it is already sold out, but here a little taste of what we’re both going to miss.

ESPN Action Sports‘ Ric Bucher has written a great overview of all the problems facing the Mavericks surf contest, Mavericks Surf Ventures, and what has happened since event founder Jeff Clark was ousted as contest director last summer.
While there is not a whole lot new in the story, it is a good overview for those who may not have been following along. Check it out.

Willmington, North Carolina skate and surf shop Doublewide at 24 Front St. will have to close for 60-90 days thanks to the building being ruled “unsafe” by an engineering firm, according to the Star News Online.
Jimmy Ellington, owner of Doublewide Skate & Surf Shop, said his business will remain closed until repairs are complete. . . “Hopefully we’ll only be closed or shut down for a 60 to 90 day period,” he said. . . Ellington said closing temporarily during the winter months would cost the company less than it would to move to a new building. The company also has a second location at 14921 U.S. 17 in Hampstead.
How’s that for a glitch in the 2010 revenue model. Good thing they have a great online store and are part of Berrics Unified. That ought to get them through.
