Oddly enough, the last time we were standing on the beach at Trestles we were right next to Bo Bridges. Truthfully, he’s a pretty good guy to stand next to (especially if you can shoulder hop his settings). We blamed his superior images on the size of his lens (600 mm). Now that we’ve seen this Canon Live Learning Pro Surf & Lifestle Photo Workshop flyer we’re not so sure.
On May 8-9, 2010 (during the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro) Mr. Bridges will be at Trestles sharing his action photo knowledge with paying civilians.
Bo will teach you his strategy on how to photograph surfing action, including an introduction into the world of HD Video. You will also learn how to capture surf lifestyle with environmental portraits of models using different lighting techniques. Feedback of your images will be given and his post-processing methods will be shared to further enhance your images from the weekend.
The only downside? The two-day workshop costs $600.00. Then again, one cover and the whole class is paid for. If only we were saving up for a 7D. Click here to register.

A 17-year-old surfer got clocked on the head by a loose stand up paddle board at Dana Point, Calfiornia’s Salt Creek last weekend, according to a story in the OC Register.
The surfer, who was not identified because of his age, was taken to the hospital after feeling dizzy and then released, his grandmother told Orange County Sheriff’s deputies. . . Lifeguards told deputies that the paddle boarder appeared to be surfing responsibly, said Sgt. Lynn Koehmstedt of Dana Point Police Services.
Well, as responsibly as someone can be while paddling a leash-less 40 pound board through a crowded lineup on a saturday morning at the Creek. . .

Jim Rowlinson was surfing at the Point at Hanalei Bay, on the north shore of Kaua’i around 4 PM on Monday, April 19, 2010 when he said he saw the water boil. Seconds later a shark took a bite out of Rowlinson’s blue longboards, according to a story in the The Garden Island.
Based on the teethmarks embedded in the board, marine biologist Terry Lilley of Save Our Seas said the shark was likely 14 feet long. He estimated this based off the base of the tooth measuring 1.25 inches. . . Lilley said the shark involved in this incident was likely chasing after a turtle when it mistakenly bit the surfboard. He said Rowlinson noted he saw a “yellow flash,” which could have been the underside of a turtle, just before the shark bit his board.
The best part about longboards is the nose and tail are a long ways from where you’re sitting. Especially when the sharks hit.

Good lord! Would you look at that turn? Is there any wonder why rookie Carissa Moore is having no trouble with the current ASP Women’s World Tour establishment? With a 9.33 first wave score in the finals against Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons Carissa announced her intentions. The rest was just follow through.
“The conditions definitely turned on for us this afternoon and I knew I couldn’t leave Sally (Fitzgibbons) a lot of room to maneuver,” Moore said. “She has been getting the highest scores every round and she’s so dangerous. I just felt like I was building momentum throughout the event and fortunately peaked in the Final.”

The ASP Tour is reportedly getting a last-minute bailout from Billabong after going nearly to the wire without a title sponsor for the Santa Catarina Pro whose waiting period begins April 23, 2010, according to a Jake Howard story on ESPN.com/Action.
Sources yesterday confirmed that Billabong will be the title sponsor of the Brazil leg of the World Tour. . . Of course, the conspiracy theorist would say that Taj Burrow has won Brazil four times, and seeing as he’s looking ripe for a world title push this year, he might enjoy the company of his sponsor while surfing on favored grounds
Our sources say we’ll be getting an official news release tomorrow. The Billabong Pro Santa Catarina has a nice ring to it and we know the webcast will be rockin’ with Billabong on the paying end.

A new site called Gaysurfers.net is hoping to attract the attention of the world’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender surfers, according to a story on Passport Magazine.
Surfing is often seen as a macho sport where many fear rejection for being gay. In the past, some professionals who came out lost their sponsorships. So, to provide more solidarity among LGBT surfers worldwide, gaysurfers.net came to be. Membership is anonymous, free, and secure. Among the site’s offerings are gay surfing articles, lists of LGBT friendly surf spots, and a list of films inspired by “gay” and “surf” themes.
If you like charging the waves (and you’re gay) then reach for your mouse and point it to Gaysurfers.net. If only Phil Hartman were still alive to read that line out loud. . .

Brendan Denton, 35, was surfing at South Africa’s East Beach in the southeastern town of Port Alfred on Tuesday, April 13, 2010, when he felt something “pulling him underwater” according to a story on Africasia.com.
“He thought it might be his friend playing the fool with him,” police captain Mali Govender told Sapa. . . The second time it happened, Denton turned around and saw his feet in the shark’s jaws, Govender said. . . Denton wrestled with the shark and managed to get back on his surfboard and paddle to safety, she said.
Denton escaped with “serious injuries” and his life.

It reads more like an April Fools joke, but according to the iTunes store surfer Jon Rose’s new Code Red menstruation charting iPhone app is the real thing.
Code Red was co-created by pro-surfer turned humanitarian Jon Rose who would return to his wife after weeks on the road unsure of where she was on her cycle, and therefore, afraid of what to expect. . . It was a final littered with fumbles, falls, and fails, but Kelly Slater was able to ride away from an impossible alley oop to edge Mick Fanning in the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2010 at Johanna. It is his fourth Bells win and he has tied Mark Richards‘ all-time Bells win record.
“Actually I was so frustrated with myself,” Slater said on the podium. “I kept slippin’. I noticed that it had moved a little wider. We ended up paddling in way deep. I fell on a couple, bounced on a couple. Misjudged a couple. I had to yell at myself in the water. That water photographer probably thought I was yelling at him. On that wave, I don’t even know what I did, but I saw the close out coming and I knew I had to do an air, but it wasn’t right for a reverse so i thought I’d just throw an alley oop.”
Slater threw the alley oop and then completely disappeared into the foam. We all thought he was down, but then like a jack-in-the-wash he sprang to his feet, on his board, and surfed away.
“I was actually on my butt,” he said about the landing. If the foam hadn’t hidden everything we’re sure it would not have looked as pretty as it did.
Mick Fanning, who scored first with a 7.17 for a nice speedy floater, some cutbacks, and a slam, was obviously bummed with the small bell. “It was great to get back in the mix,” he said. “But I was hoping for the big trophy. I just want to say thanks for everyone who came down.”
