A 19-year-old surfer who out near Pismo Beach, California’s Silver Shoals was nipped on the foot by a shark, according to a story in the San Jose Mercury News.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says . . . he was out of the water with a cut on his left foot when fire personnel arrived. . . The surfer described the shark as approximately four feet long, brown in color with dark spots.
Officials kept the beach open, but posted some warnings to give other surfers something to worry about between sets.
Surfing areas around the country are now open to anyone who wants to use them under the new Regulation of Surfing Areas Decree. . . In the past some top surfing areas were restricted by hotels or resorts that had leases over the area and imposed payment and conditions for their use. The Decree cancels any existing instrument of title, including any lease or license – without payment of any compensation.
Sayed-Khaiyum hasn’t decided exactly when this new decree is going into effect so don’t start packing yet. We can say this–-having surfed Tavarua’s waves while the entire Fijian parliament was being held hostage at gunpoint for 58 days by George Speight, we don’t think Cloudbreak and Restaurants are in any danger of getting barged anytime soon.
In other Fiji news Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum (who is also reportedly “responsible for the Justice Ministry and Attorney General’s Office”) has also decreed that every person in Fiji who has a phone must provide a photograph of themselves along with all personal information or their phone service will be terminated.

It makes perfect sense for Sean Penn. The guy who stared as Jeff Spicoli and narrated Dogtown and Z-Boys returns to his Hollywood surf roots to play the alpha male of the Paskowitz clan, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, in a biopic that he will produce, according to a story in Variety.
Penn will produce a film based on the eccentric Paskowitz and his family and is eyeing the untitled project as a starring vehicle. Alan and Gabe Polsky, who recently produced the Werner Herzog-helmed “Bad Lieutenant” reboot, are also on board to produce.
A Pacific Beach, California surfer who paddled out at Crystal Pier yesterday morning (June 25, 2010) found the body of a man floating in the surf, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
The man, who was wearing bathing trunks over a short-sleeved spring wet suit, was pulled from the water around 6:40 a.m. . . No surfboard was found. The man was not carrying any identification, although he did have a key that could have been a hotel key, said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque. . . The surfer told lifeguards he found the man floating face down in the surf line. . . The man was described as white, about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing about 250 pounds.

Just when we were wondering what ever happened to the ASP World Tourwe get news that the North American division has hired former Globe International Surf Marketing Manager Brian Robbins as their new tour manager.
“I couldn’t be happier about being hired for the Tour Manager position,” Robbins said. “I’ve always been passionate about competitive surfing, and to be working for ASP North America now is unreal. I’m looking forward to the events we have on the schedule this summer and getting down in the trenches at my first event.”
While everyone else is in J-Bay Robbins will be onsite for his first event the ASP 4-Star Quiksilver Pro Pro Puerto Escondido.
Freddy P. tweeted something the other day that reminded us that while we may have completely forgotten about it for the past for weeks, there is an ASP World Tour going on.
Time off is good, but this much time off is dangerous. Haven’t surfed a heat in ages. Fighters get ring rust. What do surfers get? Freddy said on Monday.
But how long has it been? The last contest (The Santa Catarina Pro) ended on April 29, 2010. The Billabong Pro at J-Bay doesn’t begin until July 15, 2010. That’s 77 days. The ASP really needs to learn something about momentum. We don’t even remember who won the first few contests or who is in the lead. . . It’s Kelly, right?
