When Rip Curl wanted to get that stop motion every angle photo look (made popular 10 years ago by The Matrix) for their Mirage boardies, their ad agency just picked up 52 Canon EOS cameras, put them on a big rack and fired away, according to a story on Cnet.

Mick Fanning dominated the heaving Culs Nus barrels like a man to claim his second Quiksilver Pro France win today (October 2, 2010) while finalist Kelly Slater took some savage beatings (click the image above to watch the final). We slept through the entire day’s event and will be forced to catch all the heats on demand via the Quiksilver Live iPhone app.
“That was difficult,” Fanning said. “Kelly (Slater) and I were talking out there about how we were trying to get in the spot. There was just a lot of water moving and it was super challenging. I got absolutely hammered by that set – copped the whole thing on the head and it killed me. You were either in the spot or you weren’t, and I was fortunate enough to be there for a couple.” . . . “This one feels pretty good,” Fanning said. “Last year, the waves weren’t really pumping. This year, it almost didn’t feel like a surf contest, but rather a bunch of guys getting barrelled off their heads for a few days.”
This win moves Fanning into third place in the ASP rankings and helped Slater increase his lead over Jordy Smith by 7,250 points. Follow the jump for all the details.

A teenage surfer at South Africa’s Melkbaai beach was bitten on the foot Friday (October 1, 2010), according to a story on iAfrica.com.
However, the surfer, who appeared to be a teenager, had relatively minor injuries to his foot. . . He had three deep lacerations, penetrating to the bone, and had lost blood. . . He was treated on the spot and en route to hospital, Visser said.
Sharks appear to come closer to shore around the Cape this time of year, according to the story. This time a little too close.

This whole staying up all night to watch the Quiksilver Pro France isn’t going so well. We end up catching a little late and a little more early and have no real idea what’s going on in between. It’s like France has it’s own time zone or something.
Today, the event got all the way through round five before they had to shut it down for the day at 6:30 PM local time (9:30 AM PST).
Our favorite heat came in round 4 when Kelly Slater snuck a win over Michel Bourez and Owen Wright with a barrel and and air in the last minutes of the heat.
“I needed to throw something at the end of the heat,” Slater said. “I couldn’t really hear all the scores out there and I knew I needed something. That second barrel probably wasn’t too deep so I tried to finish with an air and it worked out. You play a different game in a man-on-man heat with priority. You would never surf a completely different bank in man-on-man. It cleaned up over there. That little bit of wind. It’s dead glassy now. It’s perfect.”
It was classic Slater, but then we’re suckers for that stuff. Anyway, tomorrow quarter finals look a little like this.

Sometimes, while watching the ASP Top 32, it is possible to think that what they do is pretty easy. At Trestles, where the waves were perfect, we found ourselves being less impressed with the epic surfing because we saw it going down all day long.
Today, as the Quiksilver Pro France at Culs Nus Beach finally wrapped up round two, we had the opposite feeling. The sea was chunky and blown and so inconsistent that when someone got a good wave (like Luke Munro’s 9.77 barrel against Andy Irons) it was like seeing the impossible happen live. The only problem was, there was a lot of waiting between good waves.
En route to his emphatic Round 2 win, Munro consistently notched up dramatic barrels, collecting the day’s highest heat total of 16.87 out of a possible 20 including a near perfect 9.87 out of a possible 10 for an incredibly deep forehand barrel. . . “I felt pretty comfortable out there from get go,” Munro said. “It’s sort of like home at Straddy (Stradbroke Island) so my plan was to go out and get a lot of waves. I think (on my 9.77) I got a little greedy. I probably could have hung in there a second longer, but I wanted to make sure I could get out too.” . . . Munro will take on reigning ASP World Champion and defending Quiksilver Pro France champion Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, in Round 3 of competition.
Damien Hobgood, Daniel Ross, Tom Whitaker, Jadson Andre, Michel Bourez, Chris Davidson, Kieren Perrow, and Taylor Knox all stayed in the game for another round.

The whole game with online marketing is trying to figure out how much to give away in exchange for user’s personal information. Quiksilver has apparently decided that a working email address is enough. They’ve partnered with YouRiding Games to create a virtual version of the Quiksilver Pro France 2010.
The game allows. . . you to play the contest waves through two different game modes: SOLO Mode allows players to become ”Master of the Spot” by completing a series of challenges that get harder and harder. Lots of prizes offered by Quiksilver, in particular a package including board and wetsuit, are to be won by drawing via this game mode: MULTI Mode offers a chance to challenge his own Facebook friends in head-to-head contest by creating yourself your own challenges.
We’d play the game and review it, but we’re not up for trading an email for it right now. Check it out if you are. You could win a board and a wetsuit and probably get better waves that the ASP Top 32 who had another lay-day last night.

Caleb Kauchak, 18, was surfing Sandbridge in Virginia beach on Friday, September 24, 2010, when he got hit by a shark, not once, but twice according to a story on WITN.com
Kauchak says the shark grabbed his ankle and he felt it thrashing. Kauchak jumped on his surf board to escape and says he was bitten again on the knee. . . Rescue crews say Kauchak was attacked by a shark, but officials aren’t sure what kind of shark was involved.
The nibbles left Kauchak with 51 stitches for his trouble.

It was a stormy surf night (in North America) for those nutty enough to stay up watching round one of the Quiksilver Pro France. The time zone shift makes watch the entire event a little out of the question, but for those stumbling home at 2 AM, it is a perfect way to jump down off the party train.
In round one there were at least one. Kelly Slater got bumped into third place in his head against Pat Gudauskas and Maxime Huscenot in Heat 6. Jeremy Flores edged Bede Durbidge in Heat 1, and Kai Otton squeaked in a strong wave on Bobby Martinez in the last 26 seconds of Heat 12. But as we’re slowly beginning to figure out, none of this really matters because everyone is still in it.
That didn’t mean that Gudauskas was any less hyped on beating Kelly.
The young Californian began his campaign in spectacular fashion, threading a deep forehand barrel before executed a lofty double-grab aerial. . . “I was really fortunate to get that one and it definitely won me the heat,” Gudauskas said. “I was battling for position with Kelly (Slater) and he took the first one which was smaller and I got the second one. I actually misjudged the wave and barely made the takeoff and when I pulled under the lip I could see the barrel just breathing and, when it let me out, there was a ramp section so it was just automatic to go for the air.”

Last summer Stoked Mentoring got some funding from Nike 6.0 and brought 12 students from inner-city Los Angeles to Huntington Beach each week of the summer. While there they learned to surf and collaborated on a magazine called STOKED.
The 16 page mag reflects their personal stories and how Stoked has helped transform their lives. Besides an introduction to journalism and photography, the students surfed with Nike 6.0 athletes, scored VIP treatment at the US Open and broadcasted the story of Stoked to the world via the event webcast.
Isn’t it nice how Nike 6.0 gets us to post their stuff by doing something cool for Stoked Mentoring? We fall for it every time. Then again, if they were really preparing the kids for the future wouldn’t they have worked together to build a website rather than a magazine?

He may not have landed that inverted huck in the finals against Australian Bede Durbidge, but pretty much everything else Kelly Slater did today (September 18, 2010) was spot on (including his free ride into the quarters thanks to a “sick” Chris Davidson). When Kelly is on there is very little anyone else can do to stop him.
“What can I say? What a week,” Slater said. “We looked at the swell forecast and Pat (O’Connell) and I were talking, going ‘look what we’re going to get this week.’ I told Pat that I’d let 105 people punch me in the face to surf Trestles like this and they’re paying me.”
Bede put in the hard charge, but had some trouble with consistency in the final. Kelly pulled in $105,000 which is reportedly the largest prize purse in surfing history, won his 43 elite tour victory, and moved into the lead in the ASP ratings. Not bad for a Saturday at Lowers.
