Sadly, it appeared that three-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore didn’t even show up for her final against Hawaii’s Carissa Moore in the Rip Curl Pro Portugal women’s event held Saturday, October 9, 2010. While Gilmore seemed to be waiting for the big scoring waves Moore took wave after wave building a score of 17.44. In order to win Gilmore would have needed her two best waves of the entire contest, but they didn’t come.
“The waves here in Peniche are always so much fun,” Gilmore said. “I’m sorry I couldn’t put on more of a show out there, but Carissa (Moore) showed everyone how much fun it can be out there. I’m very happy with a Runner-Up finish and I’m looking forward to the next event.”
Nice of Gilmore to suggest that Carissa was having fun out there, but from the looks of the rookie Hawaiian’s last two heats she was set on total opponent destruction.
“I don’t have any excuses now without school anymore,” Moore said. “It’s great to have that extra time to dedicate to surfing and training. I’m stoked to be where I’m at right now. I’ve never been to Puerto Rico before. Each event is a new chance and a clean slate. I’ve heard they have some really fun waves and I can’t wait to get there.”
The win moves Moore up from eighth to fifth in the women’s world tour rankings. The men have still not had a chance to contest any waves and are on call for tomorrow.

The audience packed into Newport Beach, California’s Lido Theatre on Thurdsay, October 8, 2010 had no idea what to expect from the film Who Is J.O.B. Neither did we.
After years of stalling, sponsor changes, and wild Twitter campaigns, the film (and its enigmatic star) was finally delivered to a live audience and everyone came looking for answers. Not to give anything away, but those in the Lido theatre got exactly what they were looking for served up like a flurry of punches to the throat.
Like its subject, there is nothing subtle about Who Is J.O.B. From the first swerving, Red Bull fueled Jamie O’Brien rant all the way to the epic finish this film accelerates directly into the wall of questions surrounding J.O.B. like a muscle car with its throttle pinned to the floor by a concrete block.
Director Charlie Smith mixed heaving, grinding, spitting barrels and airs footage with full-screen white on black statements. Jamie O’Brien Is A Dick. Jamie O’Brien Is A Haole. Jamie O’Brien Is Deaf. Jamie O’Brien Is Retarded. Then followed those up with archival photos, interviews with Jamie, his dad, Bruce Irons, Kelly Slater and then laid in more action to back it up. The effect is a direct assault on every rumor ever tossed around about one of the best Pipeline surfers alive. And like him or not, there is no disputing the evidence presented in this film.

On October 14-15, 2010 Vans and Joel Tudor will be hosing the Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational longboard surf contest at Ditch Plains, New York.
Hosted by The Surf Lodge, the unique, specialized event will require surfers to ride 12-lb, single fin leashless boards along with some serious style and nose riding all for a $10,000 purse. . . “The Duct Tape Invitational is special because it shows longboarding the way it should be,” says contest director and Vans team rider Joel Tudor. “It also highlights some of my favorite young loggers, guys that represent the next generation of longboarding.”
Expected riders include: Harrison Roach (Australia), Troy Elmore, Chris Del Moro , Jared Mell, Tyler Hatzikian, Alex Knost, Justin Quintal, Kassia Meador, Tyler Warren, and more. If you’re into this kind of thing follow the jump for more info.

By the time we figured out that the men had a lay day at the Rip Curl Pro Protugal and that the women were surfing they were already down to the quarter finals, which to to be truthful, is about where we usually start paying attention to women’s surfing anyway.

The latest issue of ESPN: The Magazine features athletes (all kinds of athletes) naked in their pages in what is known as the annual Body Issue. Kelly Slater’s photo looks a little like this. We’re not sure what the story is, but it looks like Kelly just made an early morning escape from someone’s bedroom window, jumped down into a muddy flower bed, and is sprinting across the lawn with her brothers, uncles, and cousins hot on his tail. . .

Source Interlink Media, the parent company of ASG (publishers of Surfing, Surfer, Snowboarder, and Skateboarder magazines) announced today that they have purchased Grind Networks including GrindTV.com, Newschoolers.com, Ridemonkey.com, 411vm.com, Wetsand.com, affiliate sales aggregation sites Snowboarder.com, Motocross.com, Skateboard.com, and entertainment site Stupidvideos.com.
“The addition of Grind Networks to our portfolio demonstrates our corporate strategic commitment to finding and investing in the right partners who have the vision to deliver targeted content, across multiple platforms, to our enthusiast consumers,” said Michael L. Sullivan, Chief Executive Officer of Source Interlink Companies, Inc. . . With this move, former Grind Networks CEO Erik Hawkins will oversee all digital sales and marketing efforts for the new group; President/COO Greg Morrow will direct all technical and digital product development aspects of the business. The two founded Grind Networks in 2005 after serving as executives at Yahoo!, CitySearch and Launch Media. Both will report directly to Norb Garrett, Senior Vice President and Group Publisher of SIM’s ASG.
Those who follow along will remember that many of these websites were purchased and/or created by Wasserman Media Group in something called Sportnet. That site was WMG’s last attempt to corner the market on digital action sports. When things turned out poorly there the sites were then rolled into GrindTV with money from Softbank Capital March 19, 2009.
It will be interesting to see what magic ASG’s Norb Garrett can work with these sites as none (aside from Newschoolers in ski and Ridemonkey in MTB) have yet to have gained any authentic traction with either advertisers or readers. And while the domains snowboarder.com, motocross.com, and skateboard.com obviously have potential, this whole deal seems like a rather complicated, expensive way to upgrade a couple URLs.

While no one is hoping for the massive swell that decimated the entire beach during last year’s Rip Curl Pro Search at Super Tubes, it does look like there will be waves when the Rip Curl Pro Portugal 2010 waiting period opens tomorrow October 7, 2010.
Event organizers will meet tomorrow at 8am to assess conditions for a possible 8:30am start. . . Magicseaweed, the official forecasters for the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, are calling for massive swell for the opening days of the waiting period.
If the contest begins tomorrow at 8:30 AM (11:30 PM PST) it will be live online right here. The biggest question we have is will Mick Fanning go for the European double double? It seems highly possible. Follow the jump for round one heat match-ups and the official word from the ASP.

As part of International Walk To School Day San Clemente’s big wave charging brothers Greg and Rusty Long acted as escorts for kids walking to Concordia Elementary School, according to a story in the OC Register.
They told how – growing up in staff housing at San Clemente State Beach, where their father was chief lifeguard – they would walk to school daily. They had a favorite shortcut, even in pouring rain. . . “We had dirt, mud, a little grass patch and then a (wood) bridge that would sometimes wash out in the wintertime,” Greg said. “It was always fun.”

While the idea of attending a surf museum event conjures nightmares of pear-shaped old men in double XL Reyn Spooners blasting stories of yesteryear across the room on invisible waves of Black Label breath, there is something special about surfing’s past and occasionally it’s worth diving in.
Few museums bring surfing’s past to life better than Oceanside’s California Surf Museum. Today they are kicking off their Califorinia Surf Festival (October 6-10, 2010) with the film Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story and an appearance by the original Gidget herself, Kathy Kohner Zuckerman. Show starts at the Brooks Theater at 7 PM (217 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside, CA), but there is a special VIP reception at 6 PM.

It seems like years since Jamie O’Brien burned the ASP Rule Book and hijacked Twitter with a little help from Charlie Smith. Now, after way too many delays, it has finally come time some answers.
Who is J.O.B. tells the story of Jamie O’Brien – a towheaded, semi-deaf haole born on the North Shore of Oahu to a wild Australian father – and how he became one of the most controversial surfers, renowned for his presence in the barrel. The film provides a peek into how J.O.B. was weaned to throw himself over Pipeline ledges, translating into a life-long adventure of draining bombs, tweaking airs, breaking legs and more. Who is J.O.B. was filmed using a combination of 16mm, RED camera, and Canon 7D footage and was shot on location in Hawaii, Indonesia, Micronesia, French Polynesia, Fiji, Mexico and Japan.
