The world’s most famous shark survivor Bethany Hamilton got a chance to share the aloha with a group of overly large people when she attempted to teach contestants on The Biggest Loser how to surf, according to a story on People.com.
“I surprised them on the beach,” Hamilton, 22, tells PEOPLE of the episode that aired March 20 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. “They were super excited and maybe a little nervous, but I think they were just so stoked to be there.”
Yes, sea water is reportedly good for large people. We’ve heard it makes them feel weightless plus, there’s probably no safer place to be in the ocean than surrounded by big, thick, juicy people. Click here to watch the full episode.

His boards have been dominating ASP World Tour line-ups lately, so Surfing Life Australia decided it was time to get the story straight from Matt Biolos. And as we know, conversations with Biolos are always entertaining, enlightening, and energizing. Here’s just a snip:
I really like to put a real effort into the people I am currently working with, and prefer to do them right. Kolohe is the main reason for the resurgence of my competitive shaping and he remains my primary focus. Taj called in January and asked if I would commit to his needs and whims, and if he could rely on me, and I said yes. Julian knows I am here to go the extra mile for him whenever he calls. At that level it’s hard to commit to much more than that.

Underwater cinematographer Mike Prickett (who has filmed for Riding Giants, Step Into Liquid, and Ultimate Wave Tahiti among others) was partially paralyzed while working on a dive in Tahiti recently.
Prickett, 47, sustained a severe case of decompression sickness while saving the life of another diver on the job. He was paralyzed from the chest down but has today regained some sensation in his legs. Doctors are hopeful for his recovery. . . “I was doing an underwater shoot for wetsuits and dive gear,” Prickett said. “I saw another diver sinking and panicking. I dove down to 220 feet to save him, but he used up all my air. I’m glad I was able to rescue him and he could walk away from the incident.

On March 22, 2012 a limited run of signed and numbered collectors edition of Greg Noll’s iconic “Jail House” striped trunks will go on auction. The bids will start at $200 a pair. Whoa.
Greg Noll, the most mythic of big wave surfers called “Da Bull,” a surfing legend that rode to fame in the halcyon days of the 1950s and 60s. Iconic in his jailhouse trunks, he stared down fear, achieved the impossible and became the benchmark for busting the limits.

Billy O’Leary, a 20-year-old surfer from Mermaid Beach, Australia was bitten by a shark today while surfing Nobbys Beach on the Gold Coast after landing a floater on to the bull shark’s back, according to a story in the Courier Mail.
Mr Kolkka said Billy had told him he was performing an aerial trick known as a ‘floater’ when he landed on the shark. . . “It’s turned around and bitten him,” he said. . . “The shark probably wasn’t looking for him – it was just bad luck. . . “He made his way to shore but when he turned ’round and saw the injuries, he was really scared. He yelled out to a few people to help but they were wearing iPods and couldn’t hear him and just kept walking.”
O’Leary was taken to a Gold Coast hospital where he was treated for “deep lacerations to his left calf, including one to his Achilles tendon” and is reportedly in stable condition.

A man surfing Florida’s Jensen Public Beach was hit multiple times in his left arm by a five to six-foot-long shark today, according to a story in the Palm Beach Post.
The man suffered multiple bites to his left arm, but crews were able to control his bleeding and none of his injuries appear to be life-threatening. The man refused medical transport and was taken to a local hospital by his wife, Fire Rescue Bureau Chief Daniel Harshburger said.
That’s three shark attacks in two days. Apparently it’s shark migration time in Florida or something.

When a Huntington Surf & Sport employee arrived for work on Sunday morning March 11, 2012, they saw a shattered window and $11,000 in watches, wallets and cash was missing. Now, the Huntington Beach Police have two people under arrest, according to a story in the Orange County Register.
Dylan Geofferson Haddock, 51, is facing felony counts of burglary, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a deadly weapon, as well as a count of misdemeanor burglary, according to Orange County Superior Court records. . . Ryan Marie Murphy, 32, arrested with Haddock, is facing a felony count of receiving stolen property, court records show.
Huntington Beach Police searched Haddock’s house and a hotel room he was using and found items from several different burglaries including HSS. Haddock is thought to be responsible for at least 10 burglaries since November. Nice to have him off the street. Remember kids, drugs are really expensive.

It’s been two months since the official launch of Youtube’s new “channel strategy.” As it hasn’t changed our viewing habits, nor improved our Youtube experience in any way we were curious to see how the channels were doing. Using the numbers reported on the channels main pages we lined them all up.
Just for fun, we threw Transworld.TV in the mix just to see how a site that didn’t get $1 million dollars of start up capital was faring against the Google funded players. We also factored in the potential total revenue (shared between Youtube and the channel) generated by the channels views based on the oft quoted “quality content” CPM of $20.

There is money in this game, but it seems that few of the channels (aside from Redbull) have created anything that has “gone viral.” And when you compare these channels to something like the Philip Defranco Show which has 2 million subscribers and 825 million views so far it suggests that sitting someone in front of a camera in a studio with some clever writing is a much more efficient use of funding than sending a production team around the world chasing board riders. But don’t let that stop you, you action content producers you.
