RIP: Rick “Rockin’ Fig” Fignetti

by The Editors on July 18, 2021

To SoCal surfers of a certain age there was no better sound to hear on a morning drive to Newport or Huntington Beach than Rockin’ Fig’s surf report on KROQ. His reassuring voice let us all know that whatever else was going on in the world, things were going to be much better once we reached the beach.

For decades no Huntington Beach surf event went off without Fig on the mic. His smooth, sing-song vocal stylings came to typify what a surfer sounded like and few who hold a surf mic today would deny the influence Fig had on their announcing style. Sadly, Fignetti died of a heart attack on Friday, July 16, 2021. He was 64 years old.

Laylan Connelly has a great rememberance of Fig in the Orange County Register. We will all miss him greatly. Our thoughts are especially with his girlfriend Andrea Roberson.

RIP: Vans Co-Founder Paul Van Doren

by The Editors on May 7, 2021

We were saddened to learn that Vans co-founder Paul Van Doren died yesterday, Thursday, May 6, 2021. He was 90.

“In 1966, Paul, his brother James Van Doren, and their friends Gordon, Ryan Emmert and Serge D’Elia became partners in opening the first Vans store, according to Wikipedia. It took a year to build and set up the factory at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim.”

A week and a half ago Paul’s memoir Authentic was released.

In Authentic, he shares his unlikely journey from high-school dropout to sneaker-industry legend. A blue-collar kid with no higher education and zero retail experience, Van Doren started out as a 16-year-old “service boy” at a local rubber factory. Over the next few decades, he leveraged a knack for numbers, a genius for efficiency, and the know-how to make a great canvas tennis shoe into an all-American success story. What began as a family shoe business has today evolved into a globally recognized brand with billions of dollars of annual revenue.

Thanks Paul for all you did for all of us and for living an incredible, authentic life. Our thoughts are with the entire Van Doren family. If you have a Paul Van Doren story to share, please leave it in the comments.

Look Who’s On The Ultimate Surfer

by The Editors on May 6, 2021

A certain privately owned entertainment company specializing in event and online streamed content production (mostly surfing sport) announced today the cast of beautiful surfers who will “battle it out at [the] state-of-the-art Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California” as part of the new ABC reality competition show called The Ultimate Surfer.

The cast is described as the “world’s greatest up-and-coming surfers” however one look at the list suggests producers may be wading knee deep into hyperbole bay. The crew includes: Anastasia Ashley – 34, Miami Beach, Florida, Kai Barger – 31, Haiku, Hawaii, Mason Barnes – 27, Venice, California, Tia Blanco – 24, Oceanside, California, Austin Clouse – 27, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Brianna Cope – 26, Koloa, Hawaii, Luke Davis – 28, Los Angeles, California, Kayla Durden – 28, Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Juli Hernandez – 23, Costa Mesa, California, Zeke Lau – 27, Honolulu, Hawaii, Alejandro Moreda – 35, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Koa Smith – 26, Sunset Beach, Hawaii, Malia Ward – 23, San Clemente, California, Bruna Zaun – 31, Redondo Beach, California.

Are they Insta hot? Yes. Do they surf well? Sure. Will they be entertaining to watch? Maybe. Will the show end up some awkward mix of the worst reality TV tropes and surf cliche? Chances seem pretty good. But yeah, we’ll probably watch it anyway.
