Each month the user will find striking photography of the 2012 Miss Reef Girl as they venture through Isabella, Aguadilla, Rincon, the waterfalls at San Sebastian and the caves of Arecibo. The app can be updated for free every year to reflect the most current Miss Reef Calendar imagery.

“The Offcuts Initiative is a recognition of our effort to waste no waste,” states Brad Anderson, Grain co-owner. “In the normal course of producing surfboards and Home Grown Kits, we’ve simply devoted ourselves to finding ways for each off-cut to be used somewhere down the line.” Though the last stop for Grain’s shavings and splinters is as animal bedding or garden mulch, whatever wood harbors even a hint of utility gets saved in the corners of the shop to await it’s full potential.

The event series pits four-man teams‹two surf shop pros and two shop employees‹against each other for a chance to win $10,000, an advertising spread in Surfer Magazine, and the title of best surf shop in the country. This year each regional qualifier will also earn an expense-paid trip to Bali, Indonesia, to compete at the National Championship event.

Day one of the 2012 Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach seemed to go well for all of the top seeds, except for Taj Burrow. Burrow came in last against Nic Muscroft and Kolohe Andino in Round one Heat eight. Muscroft seemed surprised by it all.
“My legs are a bit sore after that last wave,” Muscroft said. “I didn’t know if I would have much of a chance against those guys out there, but I was able to get a good wave at the end and got the score. It’s always a pleasure to compete at this level and my best friend Robbo (Adam Robertson) made it to the Finals here a few years ago and that’s given me the confidence to do well here too.”
High men’s score of the day went to Owen Wright with a 17.93. But the day’s highest score was Sally Fitzgibbons 18.84 against Coco Ho and Sage Erickson. For the official word from the ASP follow the jump. [click to continue…]
The winners will be announced at the invitation-only Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards party at the Grove Theater in Anaheim, California on May 4, 2012. The show will be webcast that night on YouTube’s Newtork A, and will be broadcast as a one-hour program on FUEL TV on Sunday, May 20 at 3 P.M. PT. This year’s event marks the 12th-annual edition of the Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards, an event open to every qualified surfer at every break on every day of the year, so long as the action is captured by a video or still camera and submitted for judging by the XXL’s voting academy of expert surfers and lensmen.

Australian surfing legend Michael Peterson died today (March 29, 2012) after a heart attack at his home in Coolangatta, Australia, according to a story in The Age. He was 59.
Peterson will be remembered for being virtually unbeatable in competition in the early 1970s and for providing the defining image of the iconic surfing movie, Morning of the Earth, in 1971. . . The greatest tribute to the reclusive rebel from Coolangatta was delivered to his face by the world’s greatest surfer, Kelly Slater, who once told him: “You are better than me, MP.”
His story is one is one of rockstar-like status and one that is sure to endure: A volatile parallel with drugs and a unique and beautiful approach to riding waves. He may be most famously remembered for a car chase that required 35 cop cars to stop him, but more likely that classic cutback shot – surfing’s most iconic ever.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends who stood by him through it all.

2 John Florence grabbed his first title and Courtney Conlogue snapped up her second Telstra Drug Aware Pro Margaret River title Saturday, March 24, 2012 in Western Australia. Florence edged Olamana Eleogram with two 9 pointers.
“I’ve been having a lot of fun this week,” Florence said. “The waves are are a lot like at home, even the wind when it’s good for airs is a lot like Hawaii. The waves have been fun in all of my heats. I’m so stoked to win. This gives me a lot of confidence going into Bells because I hear the waves are similar. I was so stoked to make the Final with Ola (Eleogram), I’ve grown up surfing with him and to have him in the Final with me at Margaret River was great.”
Conlogue took out Malia Manuel in the women’s final with two 8 point rides.
“I was trying not to think about going back-to-back too much because I didn’t want to put pressure on myself,” Conlogue said. “I’m stoked to have gotten two in a row. This place taught me a lot last year and the years before. The first time I came here I lost in the second round and it was quite an embarrassing heat. Going from that to what I’ve done now feels great, and each year I come back I feel like I get to know the waves better and better. Now I’m looking forward to going to Bells because this place is great training for down there.”
