There were more lay days than competition days at the 2012 Roxy Pro Biarritz, but that didn’t slow the girls down. Especially Stephanie Gilmore who won both the event (downing Tyler Wright 18.53 to 13.1) and her fifth ASP Women’s World Title.
“I woke up this morning and thought it wouldn’t happen today,” Gilmore said. “But as the day progressed, and things fell into place, I began to believe it could happen. France is such a special place and having so many people on the beach watching us surf today is really emotional. I think I’m going to cry. . . “This year for me was all about improving my consistency and having fun with my surfing,” Gilmore said. “From when I started five years ago to where we are now, women’s surfing has improved so much. It’s an honor to be back up top as these girls push me everyday and are all incredible surfers.”

After what seemed like weeks of waiting (ok, only three days), the Roxy Pro Biarritz is finally up and running in two- to three-foot surf.
“We’ve got a little bit of new energy in the swell that’s supposed to be building throughout the day” Dave Shipley, ASP Head Judge stated. “We’ll be starting this morning at 7.30am with Round 1 and move pretty cleanly through Round 2 & 3 today with the likelihood of solid surf tomorrow to finish up.”

Artist and filmmaker Alex Kopps gets down with some ninja shiz with his new collaboration with Vans. The Surfjitsu (out this fall) comes in light tonal prints “that become more visible as the shoes get dirty and worn in.”
Kopps, whose work ranges from mixed media installations, to film, to Polaroid photography, frequently collaborates with Vans surf team riders Alex Knost and Dane Reynolds on art and video projects. Kopps also generates a lot of buzz for his long-awaited surf flick Displacement which combines 1970s Super-8 footage with abstract effects to bring the story of an obscure surf culture to life.
This year’s Design for Humanity will feel like a music festival offering multiple performances on three stages by some of today’s hottest bands and DJs. Indie rock bands Walk the Moon and Imagine Dragons will open the show followed by performances by American folk rock band The Lumineers and headliners Welsh alt rock band The Joy Formidable. . . . Guests will get an exclusive sneak peak of the Billabong Spring 2013 Billabong collection, which will be showcased in a runway show in conjunction with a number of one-of-a-kind custom pieces during the Design for Humanity event.

Transworld Surf photo editor Aaron Checkwood has a new photo book coming out titled My Oceanside. And to kick it off the California Surf Museum is hosting a reception on Friday, June 29, 2012 and an exhibition that runs through September 4, 2012.
Focusing on a collection of photos showcasing life in Oceanside, Aaron deems this a tribute to a city whose people and landscapes are as diverse as the cultures that make it special. “The exhibit is just a snippet of the daily life of a vibrant, eclectic area that stands as the last bastion between San Diego County and the rest of the world,” said Aaron. . . The My Oceanside exhibit will run through September 4 with proceeds from the opening party to benefit the California Surf Museum. The event is proudly sponsored by Oceanside businesses Brixton, Raen, Chemistry Surfboards and TransWorld SURF magazine.

Panama City, Florida’s Warren Smith is one red hot, trend-setting, action sporter. Smith is apparently waiting for an energy drink sponsor “to call,” he has no spirit animal, and his eyes were “slaughtered. . . from the sun.” All this and more in an eight-minute-long profile video (A Clockwork Warren) from Morgan Maassen.

Transworld Surf’s Chris Cote is doing a great job on the International Surfing Day web-a-thon, but his “popular swimwear model” co-host Susan Holmes-McKagan does not appear to be having much fun. But it’s early. We’re sure it will get better as the day grinds on.
Saturdays isn’t the only surf shop in NYC. After Mollusk New York closed last year Chris Gentile decided he wasn’t done with surf retail just yet and opened Pilgrim Surf & Supply at 68 N 3rd St. in Brooklyn, according to a story on Cool Hunting.
Gentile. . . aims “to bridge surf and certain parts of fashion that I find really relevant.” The beautiful boards are handmade by some of the best shapers in the world. Among the store’s other carefully selected pieces are women’s swimwear from Bantu, Basta, and Caitlin Mociun (who shares a studio space with Gentile and has a store around the corner); bags and wallets by Makr Carry Goods; beach wraps by Nomadic Thread Society; and apparel by VSTR and M.Nii.
