Hollywood hits the NorCal surf in the Jay Moriarity bio-pic Chasing Mavericks staring an nearly drowned Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston as Jay. Sadly, we all know how the story ends. Still, seems Chasing Mavericks will be a prime addition to Hollywood vs. surfing discussions for years to come.

Riley Blakeway has directed a new surf film for Analog titled Chromatic. It features the surfing talents of Nathan Fletcher, Chippa Wilson, Fergal Smith and Benny Godwin.
Chroma by definition is the purity of color, or its freedom from monotony. Analog is characterized by our team and influenced by the chroma each individual emits. Color defines us in existence. Color is alive.
The film we premiere in September sometime. We’ll keep you posted.

Kai Neville is about to release his new What Youth full length feature film titled Dear Suburbia: And Excursion Into The Absurfa. The title kind of reminds us of those girls on Instagram who describe themselves as quirky or weird. Nonetheless, Dear Suburbia is destined to be the it, now, happening, thing because it features all the cool kids: Dane Reynolds, John John Florence, Yadin Nicol, Kolohe Andino, Conner Coffin, Craig Anderson, Mitch Coleborn, Dion Agius, Evan Geiselman, Chippa Wilson, Dillon Perillo, Jack Freestone, and Taj Burrow.

Sometimes ultra realism isn’t exactly what we’re all after with video games. And nothing in Party Wave is realistic, however, it is fun in a crazy, overly animated Japanese video game way. Party Wave was developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the massively popular Final Fantasy series, according to a post on Kotaku.
The object is to ride waves, avoid sea life, and to get a bunch of surfers to pull off tricks without wiping out. The wave riding took some getting used so to get maximum points and pull off tricks.

Alexandre Ressica, 22, of La Reunion died (Monday, July 23, 2012) after having his leg bit off by a shark, according to a story in The Australian.
Fellow surfers were able to haul Alexandre Rassica, a 22-year-old local, back to the beach at Trois-Bassins on the west of the island after the attack. But when paramedics arrived he was in a state of cardiac arrest, officials said.
This is retiredly the sixth attack on humans in the past year. Our thoughts are with Rassica’s family and friends.

Not sure if you’re up for an art overdose this morning? You might want to back off on this collaboration between Desillusion Magazine, Raen Optics, and RVCA. It is titled This Is Alex and it’s a profile of Alex Knost. Here’s what they say:
Hailing from Costa Mesa, California, Alex Knost certainly stands out of the crowd; a worthy heir to a surf culture that’s made up of pioneers, and numerous creative artists. After having followed in the footsteps of his spiritual big brother, Joel Tudor, Alex became in turn one of the best long boarders in the world, paddling his way to the front of the scene, in a counter culture that we thought was drowning under the waves of an extremely lucrative economy- surf industry. Almost uncatchable, the man flits like a butterfly from one art to the next (from photography to video, board shapes to music) trying to, like he says “lose himself in anything he does, hoping to exceed the limits that society has set him”.

Ben Linden, 24, of Perth, Australia (pictured right with his girlfriend Alana Noakes) was killed Saturday, July 14, 2012 after being mauled by what experts believe was a great white shark four kilometers south of Wedge Island, according to a story in Perth Now.
The jet-ski rider who tried to retrieve the man said it was a “massive, massive white shark” and “there was blood everywhere”. . . The shark tried to knock Matt Holmes, 22, off his jet ski as he attempted to pull the surfer on to the back of the craft. Then the beast returned to take the lifeless body for a second time. . . “By the time I got out there half of him had been taken and the shark was circling,” Mr Holmes said of the attack near Wedge Island, 180km north of Perth.
Linden was reportedly the fifth person killed by a shark in less than a year. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and especially with his girlfriend Alana.
