One Dead In New Year’s Skatepark Stabbing

by The Editors on January 6, 2016

Twenty-year-old Jonathan Douglin is dead after being stabbed during an altercation during a party at the EightSixty Custom skateboard shop in Hartford, Connecticut, according to a story in the Hartford Courant.

Two witnesses told Hartford detectives that they were at a New Year’s party at EightSixty Custom, a skateboard shop and indoor skateboard park at 41 Francis Ave., when Douglin accidentally bumped into Tequile Walwyn, 19, according to the warrant for Walwyn’s arrest. It was during the shoving match that followed that Walwyn thrust a knife into Douglin’s chest, puncturing his heart, according to the warrant. . . A friend of Walwyn told police that after the confrontation, Walwyn had a green folding knife and said to him, “I had no choice. I had to poke him.”

Gotta wonder about a kid who brings a knife to a New Year’s Eve party.

One Dead In Los Altos Skate Park Shooting

by The Editors on March 23, 2015

Losaltos1-640X427

Last night, at Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Los Altos Skate Park, seven people were shot and one has died, another is in critical condition, according to a story in the Albuquerque Journal.

One person is dead and six others injured following a Sunday night shooting at a skate park in Northeast Albuquerque and police don’t know who the shooter or shooters are, a spokesman said. . . Officers were called to Los Altos skate park just before 10 p.m. Sunday night. They arrived to find a large crowd, with one person dead on the sidewalk and others injured, Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Tanner Tixier said. Three people were immediately rushed to a local hospital.

According to a story on KRQE.com it all started with a fight:

Police are not saying what led up to the shooting, but witnesses said it started as a fight, then one man went to his car, grabbed a gun and started shooting. . . At this time one subject is deceased and another is in critical condition. The other five victims appear to have sustained non-life threatening injuries. . . Witnesses said the fight Sunday possibly started over a stolen skateboard. Then they said someone started shooting. . . “I don’t know, I can’t even explain it because I’m just hoping my sister’s alright because I don’t know really what happened,” said witness Mariah Cruz. “They just started shooting and stuff and my godmother and stuff were just holding their kids.”

The Los Altos Skatepark reportedly has a long history of violence. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families and we hope justice is eventually served.

Brazilian surfer Ricardo dos Santos, who received the 2012 AI Forever Award at Teahupoo, has died from gunshot wounds he received outside him home on January 19, 2015, according to a post on StabMag.com. He was 24 years old.

Dos Santos was allegedly shot three times by off-duty soldier, Luiz Paulo Mota Brentano, 25, outside his home. There details are grey, with two theories of what happened. One version of events details that Ricardo confronted Brentano and two others over their blatant use of drugs on the streets of Embaú Guard (translated). The second, based on what family members believe, is Brentano and his brother, 17, had parked their car over building materials outside Dos Santos’ home which was under construction, and he asked them to move on. The response was gunfire, and according to Hardcore’s International Editor Steve Allain, Ricardo was shot once in the back, turned, and was shot twice more in the abdomen.

It was obviously way too soon. For more on the story, click here for Stab Mag’s coverage. Our thoughts are with Ricardo’s family, friends, and the entire surfing community.

Hitchhiker Kai: Out of Dogtown Into Jail

by The Editors on May 16, 2013

hitchhiker1Hitchhiker Kai a.k.a. Caleb Lawrence McGillvary, the “home free” surfer who described himself as “straight out of Dogtown” after saving a woman’s life when the man whose car he was riding in purposely began ramming people with his car, has reportedly been arrested for murder of a New Jersey lawyer, according to a story on NBC News.

Officials believe McGillvary, 24, killed Joseph Galfy, who was found in his Clark, N.J. home on Monday, dead of blunt force trauma. Prosecutors say Galfy met McGillvary in Times Square Saturday night, and brought him back to his house to spend the night. . . They say they believe the two men had a sexual encounter.

McGillvary posted on his facebook page that he woke up in a stranger’s house “realizing that someone had drugged, raped” him. And then asked, “What would you do?” Well, not going home with a New Jersey lawyer would be a good start. But we don’t know the life Kai lives. Either way, it would seem he’s up for the celebrity trial of the summer.

RVCA Hats And Sex Crimes

by The Editors on March 27, 2013

User5252-1363998983-Media1 374532 192 240 Prsme It has to be one of the downsides of having a popular brand, but two men wanted in sexual assault cases (one in LA, the other in Hawaii) were both described as “wearing a black RVCA baseball cap.” In LA:

Jason Maynard Kies, 37, is being held in lieu of $4 million bail in the Van Nuys jail after detectives arrested him while he allegedly stalked his next potential victim. . . He was described as wearing sunglasses, a black RVCA baseball cap, black shoes, gray shorts and a gray shirt during the attacks.

Meanwhile in Hawaii:

Authorities say that on Jan. 28 at around 3:25 p.m., an unidentified man touched a female minor while engaging in an indecent act on a Hele-On bus in Waimea. . .The suspect was reportedly wearing a RVCA hat and white Beats headphones with a red cord at the time.

So, the next time you see someone in a black RVCA hat, you know, keep an eye on the guy. Especially if you’re on the Big Island, because they’re still looking for that guy.

Santa Cruz Surfer Arrested In SUP Vandalism

by The Editors on March 20, 2013

It’s hard not to laugh, but Donald Warren Darst, 62, of Santa Cruz, California was arrested Monday, March 18, 2013 for allegedly vandalizing a stand up paddler’s vehicle, according to a story in the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

Darst was arrested after the paddleboarder called 911 Saturday reporting that his vehicle had been vandalized for the third time while parked near 38th Avenue and East Cliff Drive, said deputy April Skalland of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office. . . After the second vandalism — which the man suspected was “all related” to some surfers getting territorial and not liking paddleboarders — he installed a camera on his vehicle, Skalland said. . . She declined to outline exactly what the camera caught, but said the vandal’s image was clear enough and that the damage Saturday consisted of deep, 6- to 8-inch scratches along one side of the vehicle.

Now, Darst (who is reportedly a retired attorney) faces felony vandalism charges and the SUPer is even more stoked on sweeping around a spot where it appears at least one person doesn’t want him to sweep. Vandalism is obviously wrong, but damn those SUP dudes can be so unbearably annoying.
