Police Recover Stolen Snowboards

by The Editors on December 11, 2008

Turns out it was kids who stole more than $10,000 worth of snowboarding equipment from Podium in Manchester, Vermont. And the police have now recovered 95 percent of the product.

Names of the suspects are not being released because they are juveniles under the age of 18, according to the Manchester Police Department, which handled the case. . . . A rough estimate by the police indicates the value of all the items stolen, which include snowboards, boots, bindings, clothing and helmets, will eventually total more than $10,000, police said.

See kids, crime doesn’t pay some of the time.

Beachley Gets Sunset Beach Proposal

by The Editors on November 30, 2008

April-And-Kirk-Pengilly---Jeremy-Yau-300X380Layne Beachley and INXS musician Kirk Pengilly (pictured right with his daughter) are now officially engaged.

The couple have been holed up in Hawaii for the past week enjoying Thanksgiving celebrations while Beachley prepares to compete in the Roxy Pro Tour next week. But on Thursday, Pengilly used the sands of Hawaii’s Sunset Beach to spell out his grand intentions. . . . In broad letters decorated with the island’s native hibiscus flower, he wrote simply, “Marry Me”. A bottle of champagne served as the necessary punctuation.

Pengilly, described by The Daily Telegraph as a “serial bachelor,” has been married once before and has one 20-year-old daughter April Rose.

PacSun CEO Buying Up Her Own Stock

by The Editors on November 26, 2008

Nothing shows a CEO’s commitment to a bright and glorious future like buying stock on themselves. That’s what PacSun’s Chairman/CEO Sally Frame Kasaks just did, according to a story on StreetInsider.com:

After the close, Chairman/CEO Sally Frame Kasaks disclosed a purchase of 200,000 shares on 11/24 at prices from $1.10-$1.14, bringing her stake to 390,000 shares. In addition, Director Grace Nichols bought 10,000 shares on 11/24 at $1.13, encompassing her entire stake.

If we were interested in owning stock in the retail sector, this might be an interesting cue, or just a last ditch effort by a CEO attempting to boost her company’s stock price. On Wall Street you never know.

The Surfing Confidence Game

by The Editors on November 19, 2008

Derek-Dunfee-111908According to Surfing Magazine story a con artist claiming to be one of nearly a dozen different professional surfers has been calling people in the surf industry and attempting to get them to wire him money “so he can get a flight home.” He apparently tried his scam again last Sunday La Jolla pro Derek Dunfee.

First he called Dunfee’s mom, claiming he was Nathan Fletcher and had just had his car towed and a death in the family and could she MoneyGram him $450 or get him in touch with Derek. Mrs. Dunfee almost coughed up the cash then and there, but luckily the only thing she handed over to the trickster was Derek’s cell number, which proceeded to light up multiple times while he was out surfing, with “Nathan” even foolishly leaving a voicemail message.

Although Surfing Magazine editor Evan Slater and Derek contacted the San Diego Police department and MoneyGram, neither seemed interested in catching the thief and said the best thing to do would be to alert the public to the scam.

What have we been alerted too? Well, it appears that running MoneyGram scams in San Diego is pretty risk free at this point.

Chinese Skate Burglar Slams Into Wall

by The Editors on October 31, 2008

0022191004340A74B6A149Apparently this is news in China (and consequently Boardistan as well):

A burglar tried to flee the scene of his crime on a skateboard but slammed into a wall after a short distance on Oct 22, in Nanjing, Jiangsu province. . . . Around 4.30 am, the thief stole a bag of auto parts from a warehouse and climbed down the wall. . . . As soon as the 30-year-old hit the ground, a security guard in the warehouse tried to capture him. . . . To the sentry’s surprise, the thief jumped on a skateboard and fled. . . .But he was not so adroit on wheels and crashed into a wall and fell, making him an easy catch for the guard.

Haa, haa, haa. Skateboard so funny.

Skateboarder Pepper Sprays Hecklers

by The Editors on October 8, 2008

A group of teenagers were hanging out near the Ecole sencondaire Macdonal-Cartier in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada when two kids with a skateboard approached.

One of them had a skateboard, so we asked him to do a trick,” a Macdonald-Cartier student said following the incident. . . . The skateboarder “wiped out and everyone started laughing and one kid called him a (homophobic slur).” . . . The skateboarder then walked up to the student who taunted him and the student “slapped him across the face. Then out of nowhere (the skateboarder) pulled bear spray out of his sleeve and sprayed him in the face,” the witness said.

It’s interesting how the skateboarders are portrayed in this story as the instigators when it’s obvious the bully jocks in the smoking section started it all. Hey, call a skateboarder a fag; get pepper sprayed. It’s the law.
