Travis Lee Huffman, 22, an employee of the Aspen Skiing Company, was ticketed by the Aspen Police department for reckless snowboarding Saturday, March 12, 2011 after he slammed into a 7-year-old boy, according to a story on The Aspen Daily News.
The victim’s family happened to be videotaping at the time of the incident and captured the whole thing, Snowmass police officer Franz Zedlacher said. . . Huffman, who was in uniform, allegedly caught air off a blind roller and landed right behind the child before immediately colliding with him, Zedlacher said. . . “It was very blatant,” said Zedlacher, who added that Snowmass police watched the video. Huffman “clearly failed” to ride in a responsible manner, he said.
Huffman faces up to a $1,000 fine for his “Colorado Ski Safety Act” violation. Which reminds us: thinking a few yards ahead while riding really can help.
Two Boyne, Michigan thieves rolled off with two snowboards from Boyne Highlands right under the watchful gaze of the security camera. If they look familiar, turn them in. (Watch them dance off at the very end of the clip.)
With all the talk of “union busting” going on as many states attempt to come to terms with their budget crises, the Baltimore Police Department is showing the world just how tough it can be to take action against a police union member, and more importantly, how difficult it is for a police commissioner to reign in a police force that appears to believe that roughing up kids is a good way to interact with the public.
As many will remember Baltimore Police officer Salvatore Rivieri was caught on video back in February of 2008 being an abusive, authoritarian ass to a 14-year-old skateboarder. Thanks to Youtube the officer was suspended. Then, two years later a police board found the officer ‘not guilty on charges of using excessive and unnecessary force and uttering a discourtesy.”
Now, On Monday, February 28, 2011, a judge has reportedly upheld the firing, according to a story in the Baltimore Sun. But apparently this entire issue is not over yet.
The ruling by Judge Sylvester B. Cox sets the stage for an appeal, which lawyers said is likely, promising continued debate over Salvatore Rivieri’s actions and his vitriolic lecture on parenting and youthful indifference that was watched by hundreds of thousands of people on YouTube. . . “The court is not here to second-guess the police commissioner,” Cox ruled after hearing arguments in a courtroom filled with Rivieri’s family and former colleagues on the force. “The commissioner acted well within his discretion. This court is not going to disrupt his position.”
The original video has now been viewed over 5 millions times. Sounds like former officer Rivieri should hang up the badge and get a reality TV show. People obviously enjoy watching him lose it on video.

One of the victim’s family members appeared at the hearing and made a statement urging the parole board to keep Rogowski incarcerated. . . .Convicted killers in California are rarely granted parole at a first hearing.

The wallets of many Washington State snowboarders could take a pretty big hit if a new bill becomes state law, according to this story on KOMO.com. Washington’s Senate Bill 5186 could fine snowboarders (and skiers) up to $1,000 for venturing out of bounds.
It states that people “shall not ski on a ski slope, trail, or area that is designated by a ski area operator as closed to the public and that has signs posted indicating the closure.” . . Under the measure, members of the ski patrol who witness out-of-bounds skiers can collect evidence and turn in a report to the local sheriff, who could then issue a citation.
A thin, white male in his mid-teens to early 20s robbed Bangor, Maine’s Penobscot County Federal Credit Union late Tuesday afternoon (January 18, 2011) just before it closed, according to a story in the Bangor Daily News.

Stephanie Gilmore, the four-time ASP Women’s World Surfing Champion and probably the sweetest pro surfer ever was attacked outside her home last night (December 27, 2010) and beaten with an iron bar, according to a story on ABC.net.au.
The 22-year-old has a broken wrist and cuts after the attack outside her home in Tweed Heads on the New South Wales far north coast. . . Police say Gilmore was approached and hit twice by the man who then fled on a pushbike. . . She was taken to hospital for treatment.
The man reportedly returned a second time to her home and friends and neighbors “held him” until police arrived. The man, who was denied bail is being charged with “numerous offenses.” Our thoughts are with Stephie and we wish her a speedy recovery. She is tough.
The theft was reported Thursday but it is unknown the exact date the equipment was taken. Stearns County deputies describe the rail as being 27 feet long. . . The first 24 feet are flat and the last 3 feet slope down, Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner said. The top is constructed of 1½-inch steel tubing, rolled on the ends and painted black. It has a flat surface of clear poly plastic.
Not sure when it was taken? Are 27-foot-long flat down rails that hard to miss?
Golden Glow, New York resident Ann C. Howe, 78, the woman who hit-and-run killed 18-year-old skateboarder Timothy Olson, on August 24, 2010 was sentenced today to one year in county jail and had her drivers license revoked, according to the Star Gazette.
The 18-year-old was struck on Aug. 24 as he rode his skateboard on Hoffman Street near Elmira Free Academy. He died three days later of injuries he sustained in the accident. An anonymous tip led Elmira City Police to Howe and she was arraigned on the charge before Judge James Hayden three weeks after the incident.
One year doesn’t really seem like enough, does it? Then again, at 78 it could be a life sentence.
