American Vic Wild Wins Gold For Russia

by The Editors on February 20, 2014

vic_wild

In what has to be one of the best “I-told-you-sos” of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, American Alpine snowboarder Vic Wild has won a gold medal in parallel slalom in Sochi for his new national sponsor Russia. After marrying a Russian Alpine snowboarder and realizing there was no hope in getting any support from US Skiing, Wild picked up a Russian passport and signed on with the Russian Alpine snowboarding team, according to a story on Yahoo Sports.

“I told everybody in the Russian snowboard federation: If you guys take me, you’ll never regret it,” Wild told the Wall Street Journal this week. . . And it won’t regret anything. Wild won the gold medal in the parallel giant slalom on Wednesday, an event that saw only one American entrant. Wild later celebrated with his wife Zavarzina, a fellow snowboarder who won bronze in the women’s event, and draped himself in a Russian flag.

While most don’t even consider Alpine snowboarding “snowboarding,” it’s still kind of funny to see the US pass on a Gold.

Nic Suave Is On Slash Snowboards

by The Editors on February 19, 2014

Sauve SlashQuebec’s Nic Sauve has joined Gigi Ruf on the Slash Snowboards program and not surprisingly he is happy about his new revenue stream.

“Really stoked to be part of Slash,” Sauve says. “Since I was a kid I always looked up to Gigi, and I couldn’t be happier to get on this project with him and the rest of this sick crew!”

If you don’t know Mr. Sauve, here’s a little informer ya’ no say dada me Snow me I’ll go blame:

In 2011 the world saw what Nic was capable of, winning Gold at X-Games Snowboard Street. This was the start of something even bigger. Today Nic is 100% focused on filming. This past season he was able to get back to where it all started, traveling around with his closest friends. Together they produced Déjà vu, which dropped this Fall. We could not be happier to help support Nic in his constant progression for years to come.

For the official word from Slash (a.k.a Nidecker) follow the jumps. [click to continue…]

Adidas Rewrites Stan Smith’s Legacy

by The Editors on February 18, 2014

Yes, the shoe giants will try nearly anything to get you to buy a pair of their sporting footwear posing as skate shoes. adidas is even willing to rewrite the history of one of tennis’ greatest living legends and present Stan Smith (yes, that one) as a long closeted skateboarder. Watch, laugh, cry, and then go buy the same pair of shoes that you always buy. And if they’re adidas, score one for the snarky adidas marketing team!

iPod Plugs In To Olympic Gold In Sochi

by The Editors on February 11, 2014

Olympicpod

The pipe at Sochi’s Rosa Khutor Extreme Park was reportedly terrible, possibly the worst Olympic Halfpipe since the debut of snowboarding in the 1998 Nagano Olympics. But 12 snowboarders soldiered on through the sugar and sand flats, over holes in the walls, and three of them prevailed on Tuesday night, February 11, 2014. Sadly for US fans it wasn’t the American dream team let by two-time Gold Medalist Shaun White. It was the Swiss and Japanese.

While Americans Danny Davis, Greg Bretz, and Shaun White where shaken by the rough pipe in both their final runs, Iouri Podladtchikov and Japan’s Ayumu Hirano put down two solid runs (their second runs scoring highest) and Taku Hiraoka pulled it out in a clutch second run save. Luckily, the judging didn’t seem to be a factor at all (for once). Follow the jump for complete results. [click to continue…]
