Jussi Oksanen Hits The Bottle Full Time

Jussi Oksanen had one of the longest, most amazing professional snowboard careers with Burton Snowboards. But after 14 years at the big B, Oksanen is leaving to focus full time on the water bottle company he co-founded, Mizu.

“I’m thrilled and humbled that everything fell in to place exactly as I’d hoped it would with my snowboarding career and with Mizu,” Oksanen said. “Tim Pogue (CEO) has taken the company to the next level and I’m really excited to be working alongside him developing new products and guiding Mizu’s marketing. I’m thrilled we’ve reached this point in Mizu’s evolution and I’m even more excited about the next chapter.”

Mammoth Mountain Buys Bear & Summit

For years Mammoth Mountain has been Southern California’s favorite winter resort (even though it is technically in Northern California). Now, with Mammoth’s just announced purchase of Big Bear Mountain Resorts, Mammoth Mountain owns Southern California winters for real with four resorts total: Mammoth, June, Bear Mountain, and Snow Summit. And, yes, all of them will be grouped into one Cali4nia season pass for only $689 for adults.

“We couldn’t be more excited to enter into this agreement with Big Bear Mountain Resorts. These two uniquely southern California resorts have been providing great skiing, riding and biking experiences to visitors from California and beyond. Millions have enjoyed their first mountain resort experience on the slopes of Bear Mountain and Snow Summit, and we look forward to expanding upon the legacy that Dick Kun and his people have created over the past six decades,” said Rusty Gregory, Chairman and CEO of Mammoth Mountain. “This acquisition represents the beginning of a renaissance for both Mammoth and Big Bear and is the first step in the next era of skiing and riding in California. Vail Resorts Buys Park City For $183 Million

0911-Park-City-Mountain-Resort-970-630X420Powdr Corp. appears to have thrown in the towel in its long running legal battle with Talisker and Vail Resorts by finally deciding to sell Park City Mountain Resort to Vail for $183 million according to a story in Bloomberg Businessweek.

Vail will get the terrain owned by PCMR along with the base facilities—the parking, lift ticket offices, and other parts required for a functioning ski resort. The base also has zoning approval for almost 700,000 square feet of residential and commercial development.

Not only that, but Vail is planning to hook Park City up with Canyons to make the “largest single ski resort in the U.S., with 7,000 skiable acres.” But don’t worry for Powdr Corp just yet. They still own Copper, Killington, Mt. Bachelor, Boreal, Pico, Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort, Gorgoza Park, Soda Springs, and of course, Woodward Camps. It will likely be a little while longer before Vail gets there hands on all those.

World Industries Sold To Golden Viking

WorldindustriesWorld Industries continues its zombie brand march through the industry with the announcement today (September 10, 2014) that all its assets and trademarks have been purchased from Seven Wells LLC by the Kent, Washington based Golden Viking Sports for an undisclosed amount.

For those not familiar with Golden Viking, the company currently markets and distributes footwear brands like Diadora and Hot Wheels, among others. They also own Capix helmets and zombie snowboard brand M3. Remember them?

Going forward, Golden Viking Sports will continue to aggressively build on the business that World Industries created, and will re-launch the World and Flameboy vs. Wet Willy brands in the core footwear category in Spring 2015. Other products will follow soon thereafter. U.S. distribution for the World Industries labels will include the family footwear channel as well as select sports specialty stores and online retailers.

Park City Told To Ante Up $17.5 Million

Our friends at Yobeat.com (who apparently still follow the snowboarding resort business world) pointed out this morning that a judge in the Park City vs. Talisker legal battle has decided that Park City must post a bond of $17.5 million by September 12, 2014 if it expects to operate the lifts on Talisker’s land this winter. Will they pay? A $17.5 million bond is chump change compared to how far the real estate value on all those slope side condos will fall when there are no slopes (or lifts) to be on the side of.

A Blizzard Of Winter Product Print Guides

We won’t really mention much more than to say it’s been really, really hot lately. So hot that we’re forced to spend most of our afternoons in search of air-conditioned and/or shady wet spaces.

Yesterday, our hunt took us to a Barnes & Noble where, to our surprise, they still have a very large and seemingly vibrant newsstand filled with magazines. As we brought our core temps down out of the fever range, we had the chance to check out how the three majors (Snowboard, Snowboarder, and Snowboarding) handled their annual product previews. Firstly, we were astounded by how much time, energy, and creativity the went into reproducing all the manufacturer’s websites in print. Don’t think that anyone is coasting in the print biz these days. They’re all working their asses off.

After cruising through the issues we decided that our favorite was Snowboard Mag’s “The Product Collection” issue. Editor Susie Floros and her team got the product mix just right. They had to most visually compelling product shots and action images, but more importantly they got the story telling side of the product down. And that’s not easy when everyone just wants their new graphics to get some play. Our favorite features were the interviews and profiles on people who make the snowboard industry work. Sure, no one went off message, but it was nice to see what some snow heads are up to, where they came from, and where they think snowboarding is headed.

We’d have more to say, but the air con in B&N was so frosty that we nearly froze and had to put the magazine back and go outside to warm up. Mission accomplished.

Nothing to Prove will show you what it’s like to ride with your friends and support them whether they are doing a mellow powder turn or airing over a 5 story roof-to-roof gap. Hi-Fives, hangouts, hospital visits and sessions all have one thing in common..community. It was only natural that Erik and Bjorn called on the CELTEK team to ride with and be featured throughout this movie.
