What do you do if winning an Olympic Gold Medal in snowboarding doesn’t bring the breakfast cereal, big-box retailer clothing money falling in like rain? If you’re two-time Olympic medalist Ross Powers you go back to your alma mater, apparently.
According to a news item posted on the Stratton Mountain School website, Ross Powers is the school’s new Snowboarding Program Director.
“Ross returns to us with more than a decade of experience competing at the highest levels of world-wide competition,” said Christopher Kaltsas, SMS Headmaster. “Ross is one of the most highly profiled figures in the history of the Halfpipe snowboard circuit, and we are pleased to have him join our staff.”
Ross, who is replacing Mike Mallon, will join the staff at the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. At least he’s not teaching gym.

On Saturday night (April 17, 2010) Shaun White became the first snowboarder since Ross Rebagliati to be clowned on Saturday Night Live and as several snowboard pundits have mentioned: it wasn’t even that funny.

It appears that Shaun White had to get up a little too early for his interview with The Today Show’s Matt Lauer. Is all that late-night Vegas party action “spending time with his family” catching up with him a little. . . ?

Todd Dunkel, 27, for Federal Heights, Colorado died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 while riding at Breckenridge Resort in Colorado, according to a story on KWQC.com.
Summit County Coroner Joan Richardson Thursday identified the man as Todd Dunkel. Ski patrol members found Dunkel in some trees Wednesday while doing a final check of the slopes. . . They tried to revive him, but determined he was dead. Richardson says Dunkel was originally from Iowa and had lived in Colorado for more than six months.
The story says that he “suffered a fractured neck.” Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

James Lee, a snowboarder who hit and broke the leg of a four-year-old skier on February 9, 2002 at Vancouver BC’s Grouse Mountain, has been court-ordered to pay $30,000 in damages to the family of the injured boy, according to a story in The Province.
B.C. Supreme Court Justice James Williams ruled Lee was liable for the accident and ordered him to pay $30,000 to the Gregorowicz family. . . However, Williams also ruled Peter Gregorowicz was partly responsible for the crash because he had taken his son around the ski fence and then cut across the steep section at the bottom of the funnel. . . Patrick Gregorowicz has recovered completely.
Make a mistake, pay the fine.

A snowboard tour in Russia’s Kamtchatka turned deadly when a helicopter carrying 18 people was buried in an avalanche on April 10, 2010, according to a story in the Telegraph.
As of now we think 10 people died,” Irina Andrianova, spokesperson for Russia’s Emergency Ministry, said. . . .Three Russians and one German citizen were dug dead out of snow, but the six others were missing presumed dead. . . “Two Russians and four Germans are still under the snow. There is practically no chance they have survived as the temperature is minus 20 degrees Celsius and the thickness of the snow is 10-15 meters,” she added.
The helicopter had just landed when it was reportedly hit by a slide set by tourists who were traveling downhill above them, according to the Washington Post.

Add a new name to the list of people who have invented snowboarding: Steve Weill. The 58-year-old lutheir from Cocolalla, Idaho says he began snowboarding in 1959, according to a story in The River Journal.
Steve grew up in Southern California near the edge of the Pacific Ocean. He boated, surfed, and was one of the original snowboarders. . . “I invented snowboarding,” Steve said with a smile. “The first time I snowboarded was in 1959.” . . In the late 70s, Steve moved to Idaho and started building 16’ Whitehall rowing boats. He also built snowboards and spent plenty of time carving up Schweitzer Mountain on his handcrafted boards. . . “I wanted my son to carry on with Weill snowboards,” Steve said, “but they have gotten pretty high tech. Troy (one of his sons) still builds 16’ rowing boats.”
Weill will have a rough time beating out that village in Turkey or the Wickland’s Bunker Board, but it obviously doesn’t hurt to try.

There is nothing better than summer shredding at Mammoth Mountain. Morning park riding, afternoon skate, and an evening at the tubs. Day, after day, after day all the way until July 4, 2010.
“Those of us who run Mammoth Mountain came here to ski and ride as much as possible so we always open as early as we can and stay open as long as the snow lasts,” said Rusty Gregory, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mammoth Mountain. “We have the best April snow conditions I’ve seen in my 32 years on the mountain. With as much snow as we have, our customers would riot if we closed down as early as the other ski resorts. Keeping the mountain open until July 4th is what ‘Playing Big’ is all about.”
