Live Show At The Club Ride Booth

by The Editors on January 31, 2011

Ride Snowboards‘ neighborhood went downhill a little since last year at the SIA Snow Show. What had been a ghetto convenience store in 2010 became an “adult boutique” for 2011.

Condoms, lube, and other items crowded a display case at the front of the booth, while around the back were a couple strategically placed “private viewing booths” that offered “Live Shows” on the hour. Here’s a little piece of one of them. . .

Shaun White Goes 4×4 In X Games Pipe

by The Editors on January 30, 2011

Yep. Looks like you can’t stop the man in black. Shaun White proved once again that he is the greatest halfpipe rider in the history of snowboarding no matter what he wears. We were hoping for something a little more dramatic, but White looks good in black.

Scotty Lago jawed his way into second place with Louie Vito dancing into third.

We heard Kazu-san was underscored. On Twitter former X Games announcer Todd Richards said: “Come on? Kazu gets the shaft.”

Final results looked like this:

1. Shaun White 89.00 97.33 46.66 97.33
2. Scotty Lago 92.00 7.00 30.33 92.00
3. Louie Vito 84.00 24.00 87.33 87.33
4 Markus Malin 86.33 44.33 32.66 86.33
5 Kazuhiro Kokubo 82.66 85.00 85.33 85.33
6 Peetu Piiroinen 83.33 45.00 48.33 83.33
7 Mathieu Crepel 64.00 5.66 34.33 64.00
8 Matt Ladley 40.00 38.00 45.66 45.66

Kelly Clark Dominates X Games Halfpipe

by The Editors on January 30, 2011

As Wxg15 Wsnbpipewartop05 576

Kelly Clark, who hasn’t won an X Games gold medal for years, did everything she had to do last night to win (including a monstrous backside 10 in her final run). As it’s been so going so far this year, no one else even had a chance.

“It’s been an incredible night. To have a victory lap like that and set it down at the X Games is amazing,” Clark said. “I’ve been working on that for a long time and I couldn’t think of a better place for it to come together.”

Local favorite Gretchen Bleiler slammed on her first run and then sat on her next two, seemingly never able to get that first one out of her head. Kaitlyn Farrington was second, Elena Hight was third, follow the jump for results.

Nike’s Shoe Shine Show Boots

by The Editors on January 29, 2011

Diplo-1

Last night, Friday, January 28, 2010 Nike Snowboarding presented the Shoe Shine Show at the Summit Music Hall. It was a blend of music, art, and snowboard boots. Artists were commissioned to create original pieces inspired by musicians using Nike boots as their canvas.

The evening began with a set by artist/musician Matt Donahue and finished up late-night with the crowd surging to the techno beats of Diplo.

2011 Transworld Riders’ Poll Winners

by The Editors on January 29, 2011

The Poll Hosts

We didn’t get inside Denver’s Fillmore Auditorium in time to hear Mike Ranquet’s 2011 Transworld Riders’ Poll Legend Award speech or to see him pelted in a hailstorm of brightly colored silicone marital aids (but we heard it was epic and that his speech was littered with “moments of genius.”)

For all the award winners (and some photos from the evening) follow the jump.

Shaun White 2nd Most Powerful Athlete

by The Editors on January 28, 2011

600X300In its annual review of the top 100 Most Powerful Athletes, Businessweek has named Shaun White as number two right behind football player Payton Manning and just ahead of Tiger Woods. Why did they put him on the list:

With his fiery red locks and dorky attempts to look cool, Shaun White is the lovable face of both snowboarding and skateboarding. He dominated the halfpipe at the Olympics this year, proving once again that he is the world’s best snowboarder and an attractive athlete to brands that want to appeal to youth.

They estimate his annual earnings to be around $8.8 million. When compared to other athletes’ annual pay and sponsorship deals Mr. White seems like a bit of a novelty player on the Businessweek list, but that what snowboarding is to many people and what’s good for Shaun is good for snowboarding, right?

Shaun White’s New X Games Costume

by The Editors on January 28, 2011

Shuans Ngear

We didn’t get to see Shaun White’s new all-black X Games 15 halfpipe costume last night, but we certainly hope he wears it again in the finals. We want to see it in action. He’s definitely kicking halfpipe fashion up a notch this year. Follow jump to see it the details.

SIA 2011 Denver Day 1 Photos

by The Editors on January 28, 2011

20110127 Sia 2011 Ip 4

After shuttling in from the airport, getting our badges, and spending about 15 minutes figuring out that the 2011 SIA Snow Show floor is actually upstairs in the Denver Convention Center, we finally made it in for the last half of day one.

The show floor was ghostly quiet in the ski section when we arrived at 1:00 PM. People were milling about, but it seemed that everyone was speaking in hushed tones. Off in the far back distance, we could hear the low roar of the snowboard section like a siren song. Once we made it back the isles were nicely filled with people doing business, hanging out, and catching up.

Click the links for photos of some of the people and products we saw on day one: Booths, Products, People.

Van Straten Wins Denver Big Air

by The Editors on January 27, 2011

We were not among the crowd of people who paid $45 to watch snowboarders they’re not familiar with do some hucking in downtown Denver last night, but apparently a guy named Rocco Van Staten won with a switch cab 9 and a backside doublecork 10.

“Energy [in the crowd] was totally there. I felt it in my toes to my head. Everyone was screaming. It was a special night tonight,” Van Straten said, who picked up his first World Cup win after finishing four, just out of the medals, at the World Championships last week in Barcelona. “There were pretty big riders here. You have to be scared of everyone ’cause they are all learning new tricks, too.”

Almost makes us sorry we missed it. Follow the jump for the official word.
