Banff Snowboarders Fined For Trespassing

by The Editors on February 16, 2011

NewgrungelogoKyle William Veith, 25, of Banff and Colin Mathew Mansell, 25, of London, Ont., two Banff snowboarders who set off an avalanche in a closed area of the Sunshine Village Ski Resort on Monday, February 14, 2011 have each been fined $287 for trespassing according to a story in the Toronto Sun.

The pair had crossed two marked ropes to enter the Wild West area, closed all season due to high avalanche danger, when they triggered the slide Monday afternoon. . . They were able to stay above the wall of snow and were not buried. Sunshine Village spokesman Doug Firby said the incident and fines should serve as a reminder to people that actions like those will be taken seriously by authorities.

The snowboarder should just be glad to be alive.

This being fined for cutting ropes bullshit needs to stop. I get it, that it’s for our own safety, but I’m an American, and if I choose to cut a rope to get some pow, that’s my freedom. If I cut the rope and something bad happens, well that was my free choice as well. It’s all stemming from these ambulance chasing idiot Lawyers that will turn it around and make it the resorts fault and sue the shit out of them. Take responsibility for your own actions people. Stop being pussies.

Hey CHUCKnorris,

Thanks for pointing out that you’re an American. This happened in Canada.

You’re free to cut ropes but you might get fined. It’s not only for your safety, it’s for the safety of others. What happens if you cut a rope and cause a slide that takes out 200 people below you. Is it their freedom to die because of your idiocy? Maybe you should take responsibility for your own actions and start thinking about people other than yourself.

How about this: If you cut a rope and send an avalanche down on a family somewhere below was it just a case of them “exercising their freedom” to get killed by an idiot like you?

Wake up.

idiot…….I guess when you are in your car you can choose to ignore stop signs and red lights too if you want . Apparently that is your American freedom of choice . ……………morons, are you skiing on the “pow” or snorting it ?

So being American gives you the right to brake the laws? As others have said, what about your freedom to endanger others, possibly killing them by excercising your stupidity? Yes, as you said, start thinking about people other than yourself!!! Being a responsible adult is not being a pussy!
