British snowboarder Nelson Pratt, 33, has reportedly hanged himself in the garage of his parents house, according to a story in The Sun.
In a story on Whitelines editor Ed Blomfield says Pratt was “one of the most talented and popular snowboarders in the UK.” Blomfield continues:
Nelson’s grounded perspective perhaps came from his upbringing on an arable farm in Hampshire. He hated technology (famously rocking a trusty brick of a mobile phone) and seemed profoundly connected to nature. Indeed he was only truly at home outdoors, where he could spend his immense physical energy digging jumps or helping his family with the harvest. Nelson was a man with giant strength, a giant appetite and a giant heart. A true gentleman.
According to the story Pratt was found by his father. Our thoughts are with his family and the entire UK snowboarding community.

Now that it’s official summer, a lot of snowboarders have a bit more off-snow time that they need to fill. Opened in 1961, June Mountain has always lived in the shadow of Mammoth Mountain. First as a competitor, and then after Mammoth founder Dave McCoy bought the mountain in 1986, as a quieter, mellower sibling to Mammoth. But for many years, that was a good thing. It never had the crowds, it had a long, fun park, a once epic halfpipe, and on powder days Carson could compete with some of the best powder lines in the West.
June also has a long history in snowboarding. The mountain hosted the first televised snowboarding event the OP Pro of Snowboarding in 1989, and in 1991 Craig Kelly and Keith Wallace dropped off the roof of the Chalet with the Mono County Sheriff on their tail only to be arrested in the parking lot. The mountain has played host to snowboarding contests, photos shoots, and more, but it looks like those days are over as Mammoth CEO Rusty Gregory announced yesterday (June 21, 2012) that Mammoth will not operate June Mountain for the 2012-13 season.
“June has operated at an annual deficit each year since its purchase in 1986,” said Gregory. “It is time to invest some of this subsidy into the analysis and planning required to position the resort for a sustainable future, then secure the approvals and financing required to create it.”
Guess those dreams of connecting Mammoth and June with a new base lodge below San Joaquin Ridge just never worked out. For the official word, follow the jump. [click to continue…]

We’ll admit it. Our only interest in watching this Frendly Gathering 2012 official video was the hope that it would feature long-haired, smooth-skinned Vermont hippie girls spinning around in the forest. While the video does, in fact, feature a few glimpses of hippie girls doing yoga, getting their faces painted, riding quads, and hoola hooping, it was a solid reminder that we didn’t miss a thing by not taking a early June trip to Vermont. Which is not to say the people who went didn’t look stoked out of their heads. They all seemed very happy with all the work the Frends crew and bands put into the weekend.

Having spent the past few days in the shadow of Mt. Bachelor’s snow packed slopes it comes as little surprise that the mountain announced today that it would re-open June 29 through July 1, 2012. The place is loaded with snow.
Mt. Bachelor will be open for skiing from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm Friday-Sunday, June 29 to July 1, with daily lift tickets priced at $30 for all ages. A reduced-rate $20 daily lift ticket will be offered to all 2011/12 full season, midweek and 12-day pass holders. Skiing and Snowboarding will be available from the Summit Express chair, accessible via Pine Marten Express located in the West Village base area.

Yesterday (June 19, 2012), several hours after we posted a link to a HQ Kelowna story (which has since been removed) covering the unseemly details of Olympic snowboard gold medalist Ross Rebagliati’s divorce proceedings (read about it here on Canada.com), we got a email from lawyers representing Rebagliati. The lawyers, Lorne MacLean QC and his associate Ronak Yousefi of the MacLean Family Law Group, included an official statement from Rebagliati. Here it is:
Mr. Rebagliati will not litigate what is best for the parties’ son in the media. Rather, he will more appropriately continue to focus his energy on making sure that his son is not exposed to any danger or detriment. Mr. Rebagliati hopes that both parents will be child focused in this shared parenting case so that their son can grow up in a caring and nurturing environment free from parental conflict.
Mr. Rebagliati has steadfastly focused on ensuring the parties’ son’s emotional and physical health is protected and advanced in the best way possible and will continue to do so moving forward.
Lorne MacLean QC and Ronak Yousefi, Counsel for Mr. Rebagliati, have been successful in the past two child custody Court Orders. These Orders awarded and maintained a regime of 2 week on 2 week off shared child custody and parenting of their three year-old son.
Mr. Rebagliati looks forward to the BC Supreme Court determining the veracity of these allegations not the media.
Mr. Rebagliati is very concerned about the validity of the alleged test results and is making it a priority to get to the bottom of how his son could have tested positive for low levels of marijuana in or on his hair and the methodology and background to how this test was conducted. The existing Court Order requires both parents to authorize and approve any medical treatment and testing. This testing was conducted without any consultation with Mr. Rebagliati as required under the existing Court Orders nor was any Order made authorizing such testing.
Lorne MacLean QC notes that children do not forfeit the love and guidance of two caring and concerned parents merely because of marriage breakdown.
Can’t say we disagree with a single thing Rebagliati has said. Divorce sucks.

Bonfire, Salomon, and Nakita have a new national sales manager and his name is Mike Lawson, formerly of Emerica and Altamont. He’ll be working out of the Amer Sports Portland Design Center.
During his time at Sole Tech Lawson was instrumental in increasing sales, brand awareness, and developing key brand strategies. . . Thanks to court documents related to what appears to be pretty nasty divorce proceedings between Ross Rebagliati, the first Olympic Snowboard Gold Medal winner, and his wife Alexandra Rebagliati, we are all privy to bales of Rebagliati weed smoking allegations, according to a story on HQ Kelowna (and Canada.com). Here’s one:
The three year old son of Olympic gold medalist Ross Rebagliati tests positive for “Cannabinoids” by way of a hair analysis test conducted by MotherRisk laboratories.
And if that’s not enough, even his old girlfriend is jumping in on the action:
Rebagliati’s ex-girlfriend, Jennifer Friesen, states in her sworn affidavit “through our relationship Ross could not get out of bed without smoking weed to function and he could not sleep at night unless he smoked an entire joint. Ross told me he smoked a joint at his friend Lumpy’s wake just weeks before the Olympics and that he had a bag of weed in his room in Nagano and smoked a joint only hours after his win. As soon as word came out that he had tested positive, he stashed his weed in the hotel and hid his medal in the ceiling tiles.”
Doesn’t sound so much like the whole Olympic weed scandal was much of a conspiracy after all.
